Thanks Einstein Will watch it on catchup when it shows up there (it usually takes a few hours for my provider)

hefzi · 11/01/2016 14:23

Bloody hell, I missed out on thread 3 entirely!

I like the idea of a UK march in solidarity: but I suppose it would have to be in London?

Pinkchampchoccies · 11/01/2016 14:24

Polenta the link didn't work for me.

polentapies · 11/01/2016 14:25

Olive
Yes, they have got a bloody name for it. I would really like to now what the literal trasnlation of this is? Any Arabic speakers?

bluebolt · 11/01/2016 14:25

Apparently there are videos of the game on you tube, as I clicked on the Egypt video that was in a previous thread and have still not recoved I have not watched myself.

polentapies · 11/01/2016 14:26

Sorry 'bout typos, but you know what I mean...

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 11/01/2016 14:26

The FT are running the Sweden story too and give more detail from the original Swedish newspaper involved.
Independent using AP report as basis.

TwatTheNinja · 11/01/2016 14:26

LumelaMme · 11/01/2016 14:29

TwatTheNinja · 11/01/2016 14:30

Constance, thanks. If Women's Hour - one of the few corners of the media purportedly representing women's rights - isn't covering this, what hope is there? :(

Going to email them too.

I've emailed my MP and MEP - no response. Not expecting any. But that's not the point - the more of us raise this with them, the more chance there is they'll notice.

Olivepip

'I'm writing a list of quantifiable requests to my MP and MEP.

Still thinking along the lines of:
Women and children and elderly, direct from camps not those who have encouraged traffickers by paying them'

So men do not deserve safety in your eyes? Rather sexist, not to mention staggeringly cruel and inhumane. Why should thousands of reugee males pay for what a minority did? What if they are lone because their whole family were killed? What if they want to send for their family later? Why should they be excluded for being male and having a penis that they theoretically could rape someone with? That is hysterical and frankly ridiculous.

Currently within the EU there are not legal means for many to escape war, death and torture. This has been true previously when some escaped from Bosnia through illegal means by being smuggled. Sadly, the EU presently doesn't offer safe legal routes adequately for people to escape. That is why desperate people pay smugglers.

Rather than 'encouraging' smugglers, that is simply the only choice they have. Do you seriously think the huges amounts of people that have arrived in Lesbos on the boats, families and single men included, have 'encouraged' smugglers? If that was my only choice from escaping war, I would take it. Each refugee must pay 1000 pounds when the legal route for the same journey is about 50 quid. Blaming the reugees for taking this option is ridiculous. It is the error of the EU that have been woefully negligent of these people who desperately need our help. This is humanity. This is the crucial point in our history when you can look back and say whether you gave in to fear, ignorance and cowardice.

If you are concerned about the men that may be importing nasty attitudes to women to the UK, why are your concerns directed soley at men from predominantly Muslim countries? Migrants and refugees to the UK from a wide variety of countries. Why are none of your concerns directed at any of them? Many migrants come frm other EU countries? Are you confident that those countries share the same values?

The truth is that misogyny and patriarchy exist in all cultures and barring men because they come from a particular religion is dicriminatory and disgusting.

pol Taharrush gamea is the word for it (Arabic تحرش جماعي‎). Taharrush means sexual harrassment, gamea (which is the Egyptian pronunciation - standard arabic would be jamaea) means in a group, mass.

There is currently an entry on this in the German version of Wikipedia, but there is a request for it to be removed. Discussion about it is here:
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:L%C3%B6schkandidaten/11._Januar_2016#Taharrush_gamea

If you look on Youtube for taharrush gamea you get a few German clips, all of which seem to have been posted in the past few days. If you enter the Arabic as a search term, it brings up clips from the past couple of years of assaults on women in various North African countries. Unfortunately my Arabic isn't good enough to be able to understand the commentary on these or I could give more information.

Olivepip59 · 11/01/2016 14:44
makes chilling viewing.

Imagine that's you or your DD who's the 'slut' in the red ring.

Even without the commentary and subtitles, the images are horrific.

coldoutside55 · 11/01/2016 14:45

This happened once before last year in August!!!!

DID you all know that?

Hiddenhome

'Oh, and to those people talking about how terrible the conditions are that people are escaping from.

Well, the majority of the attackers came from Algeria and Morocco - well known war torn areas not hmm'

Yet people are still calling for refugees to be limited and only women and children to be accepted. Seems sort of illogical doesn't it?

Hillingdon · 11/01/2016 14:47

I am getting increasingly tired of people not being able to speak freely as they feel they will be accused of being racist... In the Middle East which I have visited many times women ARE NOT equal. The men are in charge.

Having travelled through Calais in the summer you literally drive at speed through to the ferry. Twice we had to slam on our brakes because young men were jumping in front of the car trying to get us to stop.

So, we have these attacks by men and the media decide to cover it up. Disgraceful!

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 11/01/2016 14:52

Emily the guys are coattailing the Syrian refugee crisis.

You are indefatigable and I admire that.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 11/01/2016 14:56

I have been thinking about the loose woman program. The thing that had the most impact was the question about whether woman had a voice in their native countries. The response that if a woman was raped or assaulted she could be killed or have acid thrown in her face for dishonouring her family's name was shocking.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 11/01/2016 14:56

Actually it is just those few held by the Cologne police. In Helsinki they held a handful Iraqi refugees on a tip off. It is a complex picture not helped by a massive dash to Germany and Scandinavia in the wake of Merkel's good deed.

LumelaMme · 11/01/2016 14:58

Ooh, I've had an actual reply (not a form letter) from the 'office' (i.e. sidekick/intern) of one of my MEPs.

A UKIP one.

Okay.

What did I say about what would happen if the Left failed to engage with this debate for fear of being called, er, what was that word applied to (not-entirely-white) me...oh, yes, racist?

That the Right would run with it? I believe I did.

Hats off to UKIP, though (I never thought I'd say that). I only emailed this morning.

emilybohemia · 11/01/2016 14:59

Pinkchamp, 'I hope emily and co have been kicked off. i am not sorry to have troll hunted, i wouldn't normally do it but i reported their posts and think due to the holidays, weekend etc. MN was not around to check the reports in a timely fashion. i also think that is the reason why thread I is still linked to on the homepage'.

Again, what would we be kicked off for? You behaved like a playground bully yesterday. You behaved quite oddly, posting at one point 'lovie in Calais',a link I didn't click on, but it seemed to suggest something disparaging about those that help refugees at Calais. I couldn't think what the relevance was really. You do seem awfully concerned with silencing debate whilst claiming to uphold women's equality. Or is it just equality you want when it suits you?

As for those calling for wonly women and children to be admitted as refugees, you do know that the Geneva Convention and international law don't discrminate on grounds of sex? Refugee status is for people that escape danger, regardless of sex. In addition to asking mps to exclude male refugees, are you going to also ask them that we drop out of or disregard international law and the Geneva Convention? Pulling out of agreements that are there to support human rights in pursuit of equality and safety for women? Sounds rather problematic to me.

BungoWomble · 11/01/2016 15:01

Canada is nevertheless only accepting families.
