DespicableBee · 11/01/2016 17:19

Wilde that new york post article is good

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 11/01/2016 17:20

Men from any country can be sexist and rude, and disrespect women, that is all I am trying to say

yes but it doesnt help if they have never ever been taught its wrong, and do not see women as equal does it.

VertigoNun · 11/01/2016 17:23

Great article Wilde.

Thank you for the LW link.

I am now trying to put together a question for tomorrow's webchat.

That's lovely Emily and doesn't surprise me in the least.

Education seems like a good idea on the face of it, but in practice would be very difficult to implement. Even if the resources are available, how do you ensure that you actually reach people? You can't force people to attend.

It was reported a couple of months ago that German authorities have lost track of many of those who have entered the country recently:

"It's not the first time refugees disappear without a trace from emergency housing in Germany, but the state of Lower Saxony recently faced an unusually high figure. About 700 of roughly 4,000 asylum seekers put up by the northern state disappeared last month, according to a state-wide survey by the "Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung" newspaper. Many hadn't even been registered yet - the first step in asylum proceedings. The authorities don't know who they are or where they might have gone. The same has been happening, though to a lesser degree, in refugee centers across the nation in September and October."

This is about the possible sweeden cover up

venusinscorpio · 11/01/2016 17:26

Agree the xenophobic comments on the video were horrific. IMO the video and what happens to the poor woman is more horrific. The left are leaving this wide open to the far right by shutting down discussion of the cultural element of the NYE attacks, it's an open goal. People will be very scared of this kind of thing happening here.

MrsJorahMormont · 11/01/2016 17:27

I am so glad to see this thread and the others because I didn't hear ANYTHING about the attacks in Cologne until my DH mentioned it in passing. He had been quite surprised that I hadn't been ranting and raving about it. I didn't hear a thing until a few days ago and my first thought was to check the BBC news app which had virtually nothing on it. WTF is going on with the BBC?

VertigoNun · 11/01/2016 17:29

I can't access the FT article.

OP posts:
venusinscorpio · 11/01/2016 17:30

Agree that NY Post article is very good. Shows the Guardian how to do it.

LumelaMme · 11/01/2016 17:30

Well, we dunno, MrsJorah. That's one of the ongoing discussions on this thread and the ones preceding.

As venus has just said, if the centrist/left news media don't cover it, the far Right are going to have a field day.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 11/01/2016 17:32

WildeWoman The German vid. I suspect there's some TAQIYYA going on there from the men; some may be genuine.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 11/01/2016 17:33

emily

did you see international out cry about Donald trump?

Does he have anything to do with me? Or most other people who condemned him?

I am not Amercian, I share nothing with him I was only abhorred by his views.

It was very clear here and in the US that people found his views unacceptable.

The same out cry is not heard about these attacks etc from the muslim community.

MamaMary · 11/01/2016 17:35

MrsJorah it's currently listed as the third story under 'latest news' on my BBC news homepage. I think that's the highest it's been so far, and it's now twelve days after the attacks took place.

They are at least reporting it now, but it took them a good while. I'd be interested to see a BBC timeline of when and how they first reported the story, when they first revealed the ethnicity of the perpetrators etc. I know that the first time it was mentioned on News at Ten it was very far down the bulletin, got only a few seconds, foregrounded 'robberies' rather than sexual attacks and did not mention the ethnicity of the attackers AT ALL.

I've been observing the BBC website, where it's frequently been in the top 5 of 'most read' stories over the past few days but nowhere near that high up in their editorial selection.

Women's Hour has not covered it or even mentioned it, astonishingly. I've emailed them to complain and ask why.

This has a really good quote from the director of a women's shelter in Sweden at the end of the article

WildeWoman · 11/01/2016 17:40

Is there a webchat? How does that work? Do you just post on a thread?

OP posts:
emilybohemia · 11/01/2016 17:45

Willbeat, the majority of men will have been taught it's wrong, wherever they come from. Those that assult women have little regard for being taught to respect women and relish violence and get off on the power. This type of man pops up everywhere.

If we start to dimish our values, by becoming resistant to providing safety to those that require refuge, we will become a more intolerant society.

The answer is to address the shortcomings of the society we live in and to condemn sexual violence and mistreatment whichever culture it exists in.

Addressing the low conviction rates for rape and sexual violence, the nature of cross examination in court and the sexist criteria requited for victims to be seen as credible witnesses is crucial. There needs to be a stronger and clearer message for all offenders that their behaviour is unacceptable and that it will have serious repercussions.

WillBeatJanuaryBlues · 11/01/2016 17:51

Please tell me the last time a thousand men gathered to attack us in the UK - women please. En masse.

polentapies · 11/01/2016 17:51

Good Question Vertigo

Justanotherlurker · 11/01/2016 17:52

Apparently there are groups of 30-50 men going around groping women

www.iltasanomat.fi/kotimaa/art-1452394815312.html

And if my translation is correct contains this delightful comment:

There needs to be a discussion with the parents as well, because I'm guessing that some of these underaged women have been a part of this by provoking. We have to figure out how this is seen from foreigners' perspective as well.
