This was inevitable when the conservatives changed the curriculum to virtually eliminate critical thinking.

People forget that when Tony Blair came into power (way back near the start of my education) he wanted to enable state schools to match the educational quality of private schools. He couldn't do this with funding or class sizes, so he copied their own individual curricula into the National curriculum. At the core of this was critical analysis.

Every wondered about the upsurge of anti-capitalism/anarchist protests near the end of the 90s? How young people started questioning ideas around gender and sexuality? Why feminism got a shot in the arm? My generation was taught to deconstruct everything in art and literature, question every source in history and examine the power and influence of the media in the much maligned media studies. Ever wonder why the Tory's and fellow travellers hated media studies and sociology so much? Because it dismantled so many arguments they used as the basis of their power and undermined the methods to maintain it. Critical thinking was taught in private schools to empower their students to manipulate and dominate the scions of state schooling and Blairs educational reforms crippled it. It's the reason why the Tories were so quick, once in power, to strip critical analysis from the curriculum.

And now our students will be taught The Truth, without ever knowing there is the possibility of examining what they are given. They will march blindly into a future created to enslave them, with the only question being whether they will be enslaved by amoral business men from the West, amoral businessmen in communist clothing from the East or medieval psychotics from in-between.

iPost, can we clone you?
Series of bloody brilliant posts which I like to think I could have written if I had the brain space but probably couldn't have

Metalheads, I'm with you on the sense of the Canadian approach. I also think that your governments should be improving the camps near Syria: money, personnel, etc.

AllMyBestFriends: "If we stop immigration, we give ISIS what they want - so-called 'proof' that the West hate the refugees."

A few of you have mentioned on here that if we reduce immigration it will be playing into the hands of ISIS. I have never believed that. I believe that THIS exodus is exactly what ISIS wants. They're laughing like drains as they polish their Kalashnikovs.

Pinkchampchoccies · 12/01/2016 13:57

I was confused but he was adamant. I know this comes from his PHSE and RE lessons because we've discussed it before. He often says to me in drone like fashion "Islam is a feminist religion" or "Islam is a religion of peace".

OMG Shock I'm sorry but that is akin to brain washing.

May I add that my SIL told me that a couple of months ago, her dd (2 years) came home from nursery with a Muslim prayer mat, which they had made in arts and crafts. My sil is very lefty but was a bit taken aback at this (they are atheists). The prayer mat was sent home with a Diva lamp, which the kids had also made so she felt she could really not say anything about the prayer mat (or whatever it was) whilst having no issue with the Diva lamp.

MamaMary I am thinking about it but may need to create another thread to help me construct my words!

VertigoNun · 12/01/2016 13:59

The right to free speech, is why I didn't sign the Trump petition.

Lots of little unthinking producers are being churned out. Wink I am feeling relieved my children were partly given a break via home school. They come home and tell me all about the safeguarding and PSHE they are taught by the state.

Ditto. I thought, if he is as much of a prat as he seems to be, let him come here so we can judge him on is own words.

Oddly enough the FB friend of mine who 'signed and shared' Ban the Trump had said not a dicky-bird about Cologne when I last looked.

Constancegardner · 12/01/2016 14:03

Interesting, Meph. Very sad. The future looks bleak.
Did any listen to BBC R4 Beyond Belief yesterday evening? Can't normally listen to that, non believer here, but very interesting last night, but not about NYE2016. More sophisticated contributors last night than usual, fairytale (to me) stuff.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 12/01/2016 14:03

Theydontknowweknow: "It seems that he is not allowed to express his opinion because if I try to say that it's a matter of interpretation he will say "you're not allowed to say that" and "if I said that in class I'd be told off".

Could you perhaps write a v. polite but succient letter to the Head asking him to clarify that what your son has stated is true. This is truly appalling. I hope he gains independent thought sooner rather than later.

WildeWoman · 12/01/2016 14:03

Hello all. Apologies for derailing thread last night with some boldness. Sometimes I can't contain myself!

To the poster above who stated that Mhairi's response seemed like a head office spiel, yup - I think you're correct. It just goes to show how delicate this issue is. Politicians can not seem to find the words to say anything of consequence.

Saying something and nothing.

VertigoNun · 12/01/2016 14:07

Saying something was better than nothing.

I am going to cancel my Labour membership if Women continue to be thrown under the bus.

Just when I've got over my desire to home ed my kids...

YY Lumela and perhaps if we want to 'educate', maybe the camps are a good place to start.

VertigoNun · 12/01/2016 14:08

They are going after the BBC, this time I don't blame them.

I think for teenagers especially, travel would be a great revealer of cultures. I don't mean a 2 week break either. But now it is unsafe to travel, so kids dont cannot see firsthand that what I hv been told in school actually does not jive with what is in front of my eyes.
What I did with my kids is to teach them to analyse using a set number of bullet points for example - like a template. It then becomes automatic, template questions are automatically created and applied to any situation.

Pinkchampchoccies · 12/01/2016 14:12

German media report that the majority of those killed in today's blast are German nationals! RiP Sad

I wonder if it was a german tourist group and I wonder if they were targeted fro being german. Seems like too much of a coincidence, no?

Could you explain a little more. I try to teach my dc to be critical but would love to hear how others approach this. thank you.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 12/01/2016 14:14

Agreed , Mhairi at least acknowledged the story.

bluebolt · 12/01/2016 14:15

The message from school of saying nothing is the exact opposite of what schools should be teaching. Children as proven throughout history are abused whilst also being responsible for their abusers secrets. What sort of crap message is that for children, I would be requesting the school to remember it is always ok for a victim to speak out and should have no shame or feel responsible for what some else did to them.

VertigoNun · 12/01/2016 14:16

We are under constant terrorist attacks of a wide variety. This is our new world.

I am not travelling back to the ME/North Africa anymore. It is not safe for a variety of reasons. With little tourism what do you think is going to happen there?

I can't see a future with the freedom we had a few years ago, it's gone.

HelpTheAnimalsFirst · 12/01/2016 14:17

Pink ".... came home from nursery with a Muslim prayer mat."

That is not on. If the school were to do it the other way around, school would receive hundreds of complaints from muslim families. Last year there was at least one instance where a junior school wrote to parents stating that the kids would be visiting a mosque. Any parent objecting to this would have their child's record marked "racist." I kid you not.

It is the arrivees who should be adapting to the ways of the host country, not the country contorting itself into knots to show ... what?

2016IsANewYearforMe · 12/01/2016 14:17

My DD doesn't have PCHE until tomorrow. I'm interested to hear wether they discuss it or not.

Make no mistake, this is the second Crusades implemented in a different way.

Have just been catching up on all the news about the far right rallies in Germany. They damaged Turkish businesses, smashed vehicles. Honestly this is not how it was supposed to go Angry

Why can't men disagree without smashing the hell out of each other, without dragging women and children into it? I know that is a sexist and unPC thing to say but reading the news these last few weeks I can't help but think it Sad

Pinkchampchoccies · 12/01/2016 14:22

"Any parent objecting to this would have their child's record marked "racist." I kid you not."

My sil said to me that she did not want to say anything to the nursery at the time because making a prayer mat at the age of two is minor in the greater scheme of things and she did not want to be that racist mum. It all sits very uneasy with me.

I would like to emphasise again that I have always challenged the marginalising of ethnic and other disadvantged minorities and challenged implicit hate speech against anyone, as I would like for all people to be treated with their dignity in mind. That is who I am fundamentally, i can't help it. But now I feel i belong to a group (white female European) who is being increasingly marginalised and silenced. That is what i am rebelling against.
