Not an easy one, my mind keeps changing. Right now I'm going for Life On Mars.

Anyone else?

No Space Oddity.

Can't choose.

Jux · 11/01/2016 17:40

The Man Who Sold the World - was it really 1970???!
Kooks
Andy Warhol
About half of Ziggy Stardust, can't choose
See Emily Play
sHapes of Things
Where Have All the Good Times Gone
Aladdin Sane
gEne Genie
Panic In Detroit
Rebel Rebel

Oh I could go on. They were the sound track of my youth (along with Little Feat, the Stones etc). All have particular memories attached.

AgentCooper · 11/01/2016 17:44

I don't think I could choose one:

Modern Love
Let's Dance
Ashes to Ashes
China Girl
Five Years
Absolute Beginners
Suffragette City

MsBojangles · 11/01/2016 18:02

I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many of us mentioning Absolute Beginners, it wasn't one of his 'kewl' ones but it makes me bawl every single time.

fourmummy · 11/01/2016 18:05

DH said that Absolute Beginners is his fave ever. I really thought he'd be in a very small minority Grin

emotionsecho · 11/01/2016 18:12

My dh's favourite is Modern Love.

I'm adding Gene Genie and Starman to my list.

The plaintive last line of Ziggy Stardust - 'Ziggy played guitar' is on a loop in my head at the moment.

Cheesymonster · 11/01/2016 18:14

Does Under Pressure count?

imjustahead · 11/01/2016 18:18

The Hammersmith gig has been played in the house so many times over the last year. It's pretty bloody amazing, if like me you weren't aware of it, i was more of an early 80's person age wise. Then my dd got into him and i really 'discovered' Bowie thru her.

Incredible that the Spiders From Mars were saying goodbye before I was even five, yet the show is just magical, creative and other worldly.

I was lucky enough to glimpse him in RL once, at an airport, many yrs ago.

OnlyLovers · 11/01/2016 18:19

Under Pressure ABSOLUTELY counts. It's so melancholy. 'It's the terror of knowing what this world is about/Watching some good friends screaming, "Let me out!"'

And I agree about Absolute Beginners; it may not be considered cool but boy does it make me sob. Even more so after today.

Potterwolfie · 11/01/2016 18:27

I'm not a lifelong fan, though I do like most of his music and loved his artistry and his gentlemanly nature.

Let's Dance has always been my favourite song of all. It's the first song I remember hearing as a young child and thinking 'Wow, that's AMAZING!'

Outaboutnowt · 11/01/2016 18:35

Letter To Hermione
And all of Hunky Dory. I used to listen to that album on repeat in my late teens.

saffynool · 11/01/2016 18:58

Yep, Absolute Beginners has been making me swallow the lump in my throat all day. I know it's not one of his achingly cool ones but the sentiment is so lovely. 'I absolutely love you' - what could be more simple and more beautiful?

I keep trying to pin down a favourite and every time I think I've found it, another amazing song pops up. I think that says it all, really.

I have been knocked sideways by this today and am not ashamed to say so. A very sad, and odd, day. Hearing so much of his music has brought back so many memories, some happy, some sad. All worth marking.

Thanks David x

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 11/01/2016 20:47

Absolute beginners.

snowfallisbeautiful · 11/01/2016 21:02

I think the following in this order

Starman
Life on Mars
Little China Girl
Modern Love
Absolute Beginners
Ashes to Ashes

I was at MK bowl, so sad today. Loving listening to all the music though and yes thanks David, you were amazing xx

AgentCooper · 11/01/2016 21:12

MrsBo, I was saying on another thread that Absolute Beginners was the song that made me sob when dancing with my DH at our wedding disco. Loads of people dancing, lights flashing, drunken merriment all around, but at that moment it was just us: "I absolutely love you, but we're absolute beginners." "As long as you're still smiling, there's nothing more I need/And if my love is your love, we're certain to succeed."

ScouseQueen · 11/01/2016 21:16

I'm listening to the Radio 2 Bowie evening - they're on 2002 Maida Vale concert now but for all the Absolute Beginners fans, they played a lovely live version in I think the last 20 minutes of the previous tribute show, certainly between 8.30-9. Worth hunting out on listen again.

My favourites among many:
Oh You Pretty Things
Queen Bitch
Boys Keep Swinging
Ashes to Ashes
Sorrow
It's Not Easy
Rock and Roll Suicide
Let's Dance

NellyTimes · 11/01/2016 21:22

I first heard Rebel Rebel when I was 16 (21 years ago😟) and it's been one of my most favourite songs ever since.
Also Absolute Beginners and Life On Mars.
There are just so many to choose from though.

MsBojangles · 11/01/2016 21:22

That's beautiful AgentCooper, you've just set me off again...

ASmallHenInItsLateForties · 11/01/2016 21:28

Boys keep swinging. Love the song and love the video with him dressed up and whipping off the wigs and smearing his lipstick. Clever, funny, original.

I'm so sad he's diedSad. He gave so many different people a soundtrack to grow up to and memories to enjoy. I love that he was always pushing on to the next thing and the next.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/01/2016 21:37

Ziggy Stardust always
And his cover of My Death

Not a big fan of his Serious Moonlight phase though

Themodernuriahheep · 11/01/2016 21:43

Changes, oh you pretty things, Andy Warhol...

EsmesBees · 11/01/2016 21:44

Lady Stardust for me 'I smiled sadly for a love I could not obey' heartbreaking.

Inkanta · 12/01/2016 09:06

Yes as others have said not forgetting -

Under Pressure
This is not America
Absolute Beginners

HelpfulChap · 12/01/2016 09:22

Just one! High on impossible surely.

I'll go for - Unwashed and somewhat slightly dazed (Space Oddity) but could be a list of 30+

OurBlanche · 12/01/2016 09:59

Oh! HelpfulChap... nice choice Smile
