Just in case people want to continue discussing this.

Guardian comment which I could relate to,

'I was with you until this:

Liberals shouldn’t be afraid to ask hard questions. Young German women thankfully enjoy historically unprecedented economic and sexual freedom, with their expensive smartphones and their right to celebrate New Year’s Eve however they want. The same isn’t always true of young male migrants exchanging life under repressive regimes, where they may at least have enjoyed superiority over women, for scraping by at the bottom of Europe’s social and economic food chain. It is not madness to ask if this has anything to do with attacks that render confident, seemingly lucky young women humiliated and powerless.

...which comes dangerously close to blame the victim and 'my sad backstory forced me to mug and rape these women.'
Don't fall into the same trap as Cologne's mayor, and don't infantilise the perpetrator. Every adult on the planet has enough of a moral compass to know what they did was wrong.'

Ego, it's on the back of the thread about inducting immigrant men in Norway. But yes, I've noticed a few of the regular feminist contributors in these threads.

This thread has been fascinating- thank you all for your insights and analysis. I am hopeless at being articulate about things like this but, just wanted to say, channel 5's wright stuff has just covered this in its newspaper review. There were lots of side eyes to the camera and everyone was extra cautious to say as little as possible about it. They acknowledged it was horrendous but skirted away from it as soon as they could.

anonooo · 08/01/2016 10:34

we are in a stupid situation when people are pretending that horrific videos of other atrocities are something else because they want to stoke some sort of race war. It doesn't help the women who have been violated at all.

LurcioAgain · 08/01/2016 10:35

The burglary/mugging analogy fails on so many levels.

First, and most importantly, women's vaginas are part of us, not a possession or optional accessory which we could have chosen to leave at home. To suggest otherwise is to buy into the whole women as possessions/chattels ideology that we've fought so hard to shed.

Second, I can walk around a dodgy area and hide the fact that I have the latest smart phone somewhere about my person. I cannot hide the fact that I have a vagina. (And women get raped while wearing baggy jogging bottoms, jeans, school uniforms, even covered head to foot in a chador).

Finally, even if I am stupidly using a mobile phone in a dodgy area, and it gets taken from me, no-one ever says that this somehow means the blame lies (either partly or wholly) with me rather than the perpetrator. My foolish behaviour is never used to suggest that the perpetrator in fact didn't commit a crime but was just confused by my mixed signals (because using a phone clearly signals that I wanted him to have it).

Thanks, Vertigo. Can't find any mention of this on their facebook page.

Claig, that's because it's being ignored.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 08/01/2016 10:37

James OBrien Ta!king about whether it was "organised"and asking for evidence.

Would we ever be told by the authorities anyway? The official in Helsinki said no apparent connection to Germany. A prior official statement had said there had been tip offs about planned troublemakers in Helsinki.

Reminds me of spontaneous football hooliganism that was anything but. James is dull so I am passing on the rest of the show!

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 08/01/2016 10:39

Annoo my teenager tells me this is a thing on the internet, wrongly attributed photos and videos.

LurcioAgain · 08/01/2016 10:40

Claig, the women's equality party has been extensively discussed on the feminism boards, and I think the overall conclusion there was that it's "feminism lite" - they make a lot of noise about unimportant issues, but have feet of clay on the stuff that really matters (and they are totally rubbish at responding to questions/criticism).

noeffingidea · 08/01/2016 10:41

claig probably fuck all, considering their views on other issues.

polentapies · 08/01/2016 10:41

It's the same shit, minimising it . Rapes happen here so why are we making a fuss? Read THIS fucking thread James. Bored now

LurcioAgain · 08/01/2016 10:43

Sonya - that's a great post, and a great analogy with organised football hooliganism back in the 70s and 80s.

I think we do need to bear in mind the fact that the Helsinki police had sufficient intelligence to act in advance - that rather gives the lie to the idea that the sexual violence just emerged on the spur of the moment and wasn't pre-meditated.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 08/01/2016 10:44

James is that !lightweight on Newsnight now! Penny drops, gah!

noeffingidea · 08/01/2016 10:45

Has the guardian got a twitter account? Is that been commented on? (I can't, I haven't got a twitter account).

Tamponlady · 08/01/2016 10:46

Really not shocking to me little mention of this left wing media have a agenda

They support Germany in this invite to any random coming any warned that the speed and the number would end badly it has and now the left don't want to throw there hand up and admit they were wrong

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 08/01/2016 10:47

I can't imagine how mass gatherings of men, all co-ordinating their actions to collude/engage in these attacks, can't have been pre-meditated and organised in advance. The 20-30 who zone in on one woman or a group of women don't just instinctively behave in that way, coincidentally, all with the same intention, the same aim, the same level of hatred for women.

Why does anyone have any doubt that this was pre-meditated, pre- organised, deliberate, targeted & with a very specify aim?

regenerationfez · 08/01/2016 10:48

Lurcio This is a slight problem I have always had with this recent upsurge in feminist issues in this country. Complaining about peoples waistcoats really sounds like fiddling while Rome burns. Of course everyday sexism is important, but it should also be important when you have to challenge the fact that some cultures hold women in contempt and deserve to be challenged.

SonyaAtTheSamovar · 08/01/2016 10:48

He is a shameless virtue signaller Is James on this brief listening.
He is very worried about the neo Nazis. And women being catcalled from vans. ( cos he was a colluding bystander to that as a very young guy and is clearly wracked with guilt!)

noeffingidea · 08/01/2016 10:49

Just found the guardian twitter account. This doesn't seem to be mentioned on it.

BungoWomble · 08/01/2016 10:50

Luna, most of us are in Britain (I expect) and it really isn't that bad here. Which is not intended to say that racism doesn't exist and there aren't barriers which I don't fully grasp being white, but we are not segregating formally, nothing like.
