Wasn't there a general consensus that we were going to try and steer clear of upsetting news stories?

OK - I'll admit I'm feeling particularly sensitive today but there are currently two really upsetting thread titles in active convos. Didn't post on either as a) I didn't want to read them and b)it would have put them back up the top

Is it time for a now?

beckybrastraps · 06/12/2006 22:44

What's to discuss on a thread like that?

What's the point?

SnafuOutOfHiding · 06/12/2006 22:44

Syncopated thunking, love it

mummydear · 06/12/2006 22:44

The OP said about upsetting thread titles - to me a title in MC simsialr to that would be upsetting

ScummyMummy · 06/12/2006 22:44

I think people should post what they like in terms of discussing news stories. It's awful for people who have a sensitive nature or are having a terrible time or have their kids hovering nearby but I guess everyone needs strategies to cope with shit news. It's everywhere.

beckybrastraps · 06/12/2006 22:44

Upsetting - yes. Pointless - no.

CountTo10LordsaLeaping · 06/12/2006 22:45

Some clarification please, even though the thread title gives it away, I'm getting confused. What is it people are most bothered about:

a) using what some consider to be harsh and inappropriate words used in thread titles?

b) people starting threads about things that have not happened specifically to them but simply regurgitating the days news stories to regardless of title content?

c) people starting threads that can't really do a lot but generate a lot of icons?

d) all of the above?

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 06/12/2006 22:45

So is dog shit, Scummymummy, only some of us don't think that gives us licence to start flinging it about for our own amusement

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 06/12/2006 22:45

My head is so sore from thunking, and I have chipped the corner off my desk

OP posts:
BahHunkBug · 06/12/2006 22:45

I'm going to post "cunt" in the title of everything I post from now on. Probably "motherfucking cunt" actually.

Because it shouldn't upset anyone, right?

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 06/12/2006 22:46

Well I'd be all for only having a rule that only "supportive" messages can be posted. Esp on topics such as bottle-feeding, early weaning, private education and church schools.

Mind you MN would be a very different place. And of course we could have plenty of discussions as to what supportive meant!

So in a supportive spirit - if this is something that you really feel strongly about can I suggest that you contact MNHQ, because the only hope of change is to have a little message popping up when starting a topic in "In the News". You can't possibly expect that a string of messages about this will achieve your purpose - there are too many of us who are not on here every day.

And to keep Jools happy I'd use the contactus email address.

mummydear · 06/12/2006 22:46

I thought it was about thread titles .

BahHunkBug · 06/12/2006 22:48

ROFL at supportive messages on early weaning threads. Nope, can't do that, I'm afraid.

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 06/12/2006 22:48

Count to 10 originally a. but now I'm leaning more towards d.

OP posts:
beckybrastraps · 06/12/2006 22:49

But what is to discuss?

Rape of 8 year old boys - what's the MN verdict?

What's the POINT?

ParanoidSurreyHousewife · 06/12/2006 22:49

Well this thread's title doesn't mention "titles"! It is about news "stories".

MistleToo · 06/12/2006 22:50

'to keep Jools happy'

eh?

ScummyMummy · 06/12/2006 22:50

Go for it, hunker. I personally will ignore and mumsnet can always delete if they think your motherfucking cunting inappropriate.

mummydear · 06/12/2006 22:51

My argument/debate is about thread titles - what people want to dicuss is up to them . One persons dicussion means nothing lese to another.

If ypu dont want to discuss or think it is meaningless then you dont post

DonnerDasherDancerDior · 06/12/2006 22:51

I wouldn't dream of asking MNHQ to change something because of my sensibilites that I know are, frankly, OTT. I suffer from depression which makes me paranoid about ds' safety. Titles like the one in question tend to make me get scared again. I would never expect anyone to change for my benefit.

All I would like is a bit of intelligence and consideration to be used. No need for MNHQ there surely?

dara · 06/12/2006 22:51

Wasn't the poster motivated partly by surprise that the boy was out alone in the dark?
Whatever I think about thread titles (I wouldn't have posted that one btw) I am surprised to see people claiming they never discuss news stories. I bet you all talked about Abigail Witchells.

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 06/12/2006 22:51

Aaah is that what you were going on about earlier PSH - I thought I'd spelt it all wrong.

OP posts:
mummydear · 06/12/2006 22:52

OP said in first posting -'but there are currently two really upsetting thread titles

so from that I take it we are talking about titles
