Wasn't there a general consensus that we were going to try and steer clear of upsetting news stories?

OK - I'll admit I'm feeling particularly sensitive today but there are currently two really upsetting thread titles in active convos. Didn't post on either as a) I didn't want to read them and b)it would have put them back up the top

outrageous bahunkbug

BahHunkBug · 06/12/2006 21:04

Sorry, Jools - missed the

Have had a rough day - just blowing off steam.

Apologies to any begonias I've offended.

MerryChristmasfromQV · 06/12/2006 21:05

Oh, and I think most of us were perfectly happy not to discuss someone who apparently is quick to sue if they feel that they are not getting simply positive publicity.

Mercy · 06/12/2006 21:06

Ok so those of you who get upset by certain thread titles. Is it just 'In the news' ones, the slightly tabloid style ones?

BahHunkBug · 06/12/2006 21:09

Yep, pretty much, Mercy - can't recall one from anywhere else, although I haven't looked. I don't read tabloids either.

MerryChristmasfromQV · 06/12/2006 21:10

Yes - tabloid style or tell-the-whole-graphic-story-in-6-words style.

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 06/12/2006 21:11

It's just the tabloidy ones I dislike - many of the in the news threads promote interesting debate.
PSH - I'm tired and bleary eyed, what have I done with this thread title?

OP posts:
Mercy · 06/12/2006 21:20

I kind of understand but not totally (although dh who is an occasional poster did say something very similar)

I don't think the thread title should be an issue really, it's the subject matter which is important. Surely we all need to address such things in order to understand and indeed eradicate such vile stuff?

(Some days I don't want to read about other women having a miscarriage etc but I don't have to click on on the thread. This is what I don't get - it's not in yer face)

Mercy · 06/12/2006 21:23

sorry that was a very badly worded/thoughtless post, please ignore me.

MistleToo · 06/12/2006 21:24

No Mercy I agree with you.

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 06/12/2006 21:25

The difference is with the mc ones they are directly effecting a fellow mner, we 'know' them and many have been in the same situation and can offer advice and support. Thankfully, very few of us have been in the horrific situations described in these tabloid style articles.

OP posts:
DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 06/12/2006 21:26

No mercy - it was a valid point - (my spelling tonight is appalling.)

OP posts:
paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 21:34

I agree that these issues should be discussed , But on these threads(by these I mean those similar to the ones posted tonight) How to stop these things from happening is rarely discussed.

mummydear · 06/12/2006 21:35

If people want upsetting thread titles 'In the news ' stopped where do we draw the line ?

Surely we are adult enough not to read a thread if we feel that the issue will upset us ?

Or do we all hide back in our shells and think that the world is pink and rosy ?

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 21:37

I think people should just let commen sense dictate what they post

DingdongMegaLegsonhigh · 06/12/2006 21:40

Mummydear you have missed the point - I (don't know about others)didn't read the threads, I was just objecting to the distressing titles. I never mentioned having the stories stopped, just that maybe people could be more sensitive before posting links to horrific news stories.

OP posts:
MerryPiffmas · 06/12/2006 21:42

but how would you alert someone
Allude to nature of post inside thread title?
Surely typing upseeting news story inside
would only tempt folks to click to decide if it was really upsetting or not.
Maybe instead of bonking out SN from active convos they could block out news?

mummydear · 06/12/2006 21:42

So do you want the titles changed or actually in the thread there cannot be any links to a news story ? Sounds like a bit of sensorsip

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 21:43

For instance I think the this was so sad title was good. I knew I wouldn't want to open that one. The other ones tell you enough to feel upset

mummydear · 06/12/2006 21:43

Sensorship - even !

WonderCod · 06/12/2006 21:43

i dont REAKKLLy see whyyou need to all just say " oh yes htats so sad" what is the point

Skribble · 06/12/2006 21:46

Can we not have an active conversations without news please!!!!!

I don't want my stomach lurhing everytime I read horrible things. I don't want to have horrible thread titles constantly popping up all the time.

Many of us may have personal reasons why reading even the title makes us feel physicaly sick. Yes we know its a big bad world out there, but I don't want it right in my face.

MistleToo · 06/12/2006 21:47

same point as asking 'what's for dinner?'

BahHunkBug · 06/12/2006 21:47

But if the title's already put images in your head that you'd rather weren't there at that moment then whether you read the thread or not it won't matter.

And I know that people who have upsetting things happen to them can't choose when they happen, or to have them not happen, etc - but the people who've had the things happen to them are usually NOT the ones posting on MN.

However, if they are the ones posting on MN, then that makes it different somehow - if the person whose little boy was raped had posted, it seems less about gawping at somebody's anguish (which those threads often are, it has to be said) and more about support and places to get RL help.

MN's bloody weird lately though, I do know that.

paulaplumpbottom · 06/12/2006 21:47

Its just that some of us don't like to hear about those things and with a title thats not discriptive, we don't have to.
