KareninsGirl · 07/01/2015 13:00

My thoughts are with the victims of the latest barbaric act by Islamic extremists.

The world needs to wake up and defend itself.

RIP those who died and prayers for those critically injured.

There's a second hostage situation going on right now, in a Kosher supermarket in Paris. The shooter - armed with a kalashnikof - is reported to be the same one who gunned down the police officers in Montrouge yesterday (not the Charlie Hebdo shooting - the second one)!

My friend's son is currently in school next door to the original hostage site. She's been communicating with him by text and the anti-terrorist forces are inside the school. The kids are being hidden in cupboards and storage rooms with no windows. Obviously my friend is sick with worry.

I honestly don't know what the solution is to all of this. But attitudes like Baubles make me very afraid of where it's all going to lead! Sad

Several hostages taken at Kosher supermarket in eastern Paris

msgrinch · 09/01/2015 13:09

vitaminc, your poor friend and her ds. She must be distraught. All the best to them both Thanks

pinkhousesarebest · 09/01/2015 13:09

I have read reports that there are children involved in Vincennes. is that right?

MonstrousRatbag · 09/01/2015 13:11

When the authorities admit that you are no longer safe on the streets of your own country then action is long overdue.

What action would you like to see, WetAugust?

msgrinch · 09/01/2015 13:14

pink, I have sky news on and haven't seen that yet. Hopefully not.

Reports that they've evacuated the kids from surrounding schools near dammartin and that police on the streets of Paris are walking the streets with upholstered pistols.

As for action that needs to be taken here, how about the imediate detainment of any terror suspects that we already have here? That would be a start.

NightBeaver · 09/01/2015 13:17

Superb post at 12:59:17, Wet August!

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 13:17

Sky news has just reported that Police in Paris are now patrolling with unholstered pistols

The French authorities cannot permit daily attacks on France. They will take action. The Germans will be watching this too as Pegida has already brought the issue to their attention. France and Germany united mean EU will condone whatever action is taken

AuldAlliance · 09/01/2015 13:18

There are 5 hostages in the supermarket, one person wounded.

msgrinch · 09/01/2015 13:22

This is just so awful. My thoughts are with the hostages and their families.

Reports that there could be a fatality at the grocery store. Not confirmed at all yet but reports.

happybubblebrain · 09/01/2015 13:29

It is terrible what has happened.

I see the violence problem in the world from a different perspective than a religious one. People are always saying that terrorists are nearly always Muslims, but what I notice is that they are nearly always men.

I have one possible extreme (but peaceful) solution. This would be to start seriously reducing the number of men in the world. We have the technology now to decide whether males or females are born. In 70 years time we could have a peaceful female world. Wed only need to keep a small number of men for breeding purposes. I can imagine a world which is 99% female and it is a much nicer one than we have now.

If men want to keep on destroying everything they have to realise they are no longer wanted or needed.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 09/01/2015 13:30

Is there anything that isn't offensive to some one ?? I mean does wearing a cross or a poppy offend?? Does celebrating christmas and the birth of Jesus offend??? What is the world coming to having to tip toe around certain groups for fear of offending them because if you do could pay with your life.

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 13:31

WetAugust I find myself agreeing with you but I don't know what you think our Government or Governments within the Eurozone can actually do? We are in the midst of a recession, we don't have the funds or resources to put the army on the streets.

Any sanctions against the Muslim community would see civil unrest and no doubt rioting. We are already massively in debt, the only options seem to be to keep the status quo or to get out of the Eurozone and try and tighten up our borders to stop free movement of people. Only problem with that is that any talk of UKIP and everyone shouts racism, so the very people who are likely to take that position and thus potentially protect the country have a huge swell of people vehemently against their principles.

colacola · 09/01/2015 13:31

Bubble brain, there have been lots of female terrorists and suicide bombers

Men are not the problem extremist religious fanatics are

msgrinch · 09/01/2015 13:34

cola I totally agree. In fact a woman has just been named as one of the hostage takers in the Paris grocery store.

WetAugust · 09/01/2015 13:36

So let's stop taking offence. Let's get to the stage that taking offence is as ridiculous as maintaining the Flat Earth theory. don't rise to the bait when someone shouts "offence", just tell them calmly that taking something is a voluntarily action and they should chose not to take it. Most people don't even stop to consider what "offence" is anyway. Hurt feelings? Di Dums. Challenge to what you belief it? Grow so me and deal with it. I am sick if tippy-toeing around apologising for my own existence. enough.

aermingers · 09/01/2015 13:36

The Muslim population has almost doubled at least in each successive UK census. Since 2010 non-EU immigration has fallen dramatically. If Labour get in at the next election I think it's highly likely that they will reverse that situation and it will go back up again.

So we can expect, if current trends continue, in 2021 a 10% Muslim population, in 2031 20% Muslim population and possibly 40% by 2041.

While things like this are happeningI think we would be crazy to reverse the cuts in non-EU migration.

MonstrousRatbag · 09/01/2015 13:37

As for action that needs to be taken here, how about the immediate detainment of any terror suspects that we already have here? That would be a start.

No punishment without law, though.

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 13:38

I think you should start a thread about 'not taking offence' on the Feminist boards on MN. I have a feeling you will get very short shrift Grin

aermingers · 09/01/2015 13:38

Incidentally someone at my work just seriously blamed these attacks on Nigel Farage for 'setting an example of intolerance'.

fourmummy · 09/01/2015 13:39

An action plan to counter this, anyone? A step-by-step guide to beliefs (much in the way that Richard Dawkins sets out in 'The God Delusion' a belief system he can live by, which does not invoke religion).

sebsmummy1 · 09/01/2015 13:40

aermingers Labour will not be getting in in the next election. Have you seen their leader? He is a laughing stock and people are still too scared we will be plunged back into recession and increase our debt.

More likely is a UKIP/Conservative coalition.

AuntieStella · 09/01/2015 13:41

ITV news have just reported police sources as saying there have been two fatalities at the grocery store and 5 or more hostages there. Not confirmed yet.

Dealing with two major hostage incidents simultaneously is going to be immensely challenging.
