KareninsGirl · 07/01/2015 13:00

My thoughts are with the victims of the latest barbaric act by Islamic extremists.

The world needs to wake up and defend itself.

RIP those who died and prayers for those critically injured.

it was Hannity on with Choudrey Claig

claig · 10/01/2015 22:20

'it was Hannity on with Choudrey Claig'

OK that makes sense. Hannity is on Murdoch's Fox News. Chodhary is possibly on speed dial for Fox News.

MI5 stated there is no way we can be protected? That sounds like an interpretation. Perhaps there's no way to guarantee that there will never be another attack. But, that's not the same thing as saying, come over and strike whenever and where ever you like.

MI5's job might be hard (and I sympathise) but, that doesn't mean that it's impossible.

Hasn't "the hook" just been given a life sentence in the US? He isn't that much of a joke, a very dangerous individual it would appear.

DoraGora · 10/01/2015 22:30

I suspect that both the Jordanians and the Americans have an agenda. (And, why would they not.) But, I wouldn't expect any incarcerated jihadi or hate preacher to get far in the States.

claig · 10/01/2015 22:31

Hasn't "the hook" just been given a life sentence in the US?'

Yes the US wanted him extradited for years and he fought it in the Courts here. I think it took about 8 years before he was extradited to the US.

DoraGora · 10/01/2015 22:33

At an outside guess, the Americans have less to fear from a radical backlash than anyone else has. So, they can afford to give out harsh sentences and set up Guantanamo Bay.

claig · 10/01/2015 22:35

This is from the Telegraph. I think it was a claim made in the trial in the States

"Abu Hamza, the radical Islamic preacher notorious for his hate-filled sermons, was in reality working secretly with British intelligence "to keep the streets of London safe" by "cooling hotheads", his lawyer claimed in a US court.

Holding up what he said were reports from Scotland Yard, Joshua Dratel described the cleric as an "intermediary" who cooperated with MI5 and the police to try to end foreign hostage-takings and defuse tensions with the Muslim community in Britain.

The extraordinary admission will fuel conspiracy theories that he was allowed to preach hatred without arrest for so long in the UK because he was working with the security authorities "

WetAugust · 10/01/2015 22:36

The Americans are not constrained by things like ECHR. There sentences are far harsher than ours. They have the death penalty. Hamza will have a miserable existence. They have already deemed his hook is too dangerous and taken it away. Can you imagine that happening here? I can't.

WetAugust · 10/01/2015 22:38

Good debate on sky now

DoraGora · 10/01/2015 22:39

The spy chief who announces that he can't stop all attacks is similar to the goalie who walks out in front of the fans with a sign reading:

You don't expect me to stop all the other team's shots, do you?

MonstrousRatbag · 10/01/2015 22:46

I logged back in to post a link to this thoughtful piece I think is well worth reading.

Ubik1 · 10/01/2015 22:47

What do you think the security services should do?

DoraGora · 10/01/2015 22:53

I don't want to jinx them. But, the UK security forces seem to be doing a good job of learning about plots and foiling them. There is a small argument about whether or not they are treating families who cooperate fairly. That has to be ironed out. But, on the whole: learn, infiltrate, disrupt and arrest.

Excuse making isn't on my list.

tidytidy · 11/01/2015 08:14

I went out for dinner last night with British born and educated Muslim friends

Their take on the atrocities in France ..... " If you insult Islam, you should expect consequences !!!

This is the mentality we are dealing with.

CaffeLatteIceCream · 11/01/2015 08:26

My son's Muslim friend said the same to him last night, Tidy.

Elsewhere on MN the inevitable crap about how it's not really about religion has emerged.

Hmmmm. Tell that to Muslims - lots of them certainly seem to think it is.

And btw...I have not heard a single Muslim anywhere say, "This is not about our religion". It's all...."Well, they've interpreted the texts wrongly".....so acknowledging that the motivation IS Islam, just not their personal take on it.

permacult · 11/01/2015 09:02

Those friends would be SUNNI muslim, right? So from now on, a more intelligent way of labeling people would be by saying Sunni Muslim just like you would not blame Catholics for Protestant attacks in Ireland or vice versa. It is not too complicated ... is it????

JohnFarleysRuskin · 11/01/2015 09:34

Still waiting for you to show the posts where I said or even suggested Muslims were taking over the world and want sharia law everywhere.

Or are all your posts full of lies and crap perma?

fourmummy · 11/01/2015 09:51

Completely agree with posters who said that, ultimately, this is about land-grab. If the elements don't get you, then predators will. Nothing unique or special about Islam - it's just a vehicle to secure power and privilege. The human race has a long history of it.

500Decibels · 11/01/2015 09:53

I know lots of Sunni Muslims and not one person I know thinks that that's what you get if you insult Islam!
All of the ones I know think that what happened is awful. Some even think along the conspiracy line as they think it's such a despicable and well orchestrated attack that surely there must be other hands involved.
There was a Muslim killed too in the Recent attack. There often is. Muslims were killed in 9/11, 7/7 and in the majority of the terrorist attacks by extremists. They don't get a special status for being Muslim and therefore exempt. They are victims too.

CaffeLatteIceCream · 11/01/2015 09:59

The human race has a long history of it. Yes, and it's called religion.

I am never certain what point people think they are making when they say...it's all about power, privilege, control. Yes, it is...that's what religion is nearly always about, certainly in the case of the Abrahamic religions.

And there IS something special about Islam - the open ended instruction to kill anyone who isn't a member of the religion makes Christianity's "stone the gays" look positively pacifist.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 11/01/2015 10:00

There have been plenty of high profile and other Muslims who have said this is not my religion- The terrorists are using my religion. Straight away, 20 imams went to Charlie hebdo offices and said -this is not us. I would like it if the media reported those speaking out against extremism more.

CaffeLatteIceCream · 11/01/2015 10:15

This is not my religion, but NOT, this is not about religion at all. Which is what a lot of people elsewhere are trying to say. "This isn't about religion at all...." when it manifestly is.

Anyway...THIS sums it all up perfectly for me.

permacult · 11/01/2015 10:16

Anything put out by News Corp is going to reflect the views of Murdoch so don't expect any honest reporting regarding the views of Muslims any time soon (as made clear by his last statement).
