Just heard on the news that Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter" has died in a diving accident. He was stung through the heart by a stingray.

His poor family.

i think i heard somewhere that a tape does exist, that it shows the stingray spiking him, and him pulling the barb out, think it was his friend that was saying this in an interview, the friend said it would never be shown. hope not for the sake of his family.

MegaLegs · 05/09/2006 21:40

surely not

Earlybird · 05/09/2006 21:42

MegaLegs - I'm not sure I want to click on your link. What does it show?

hulababy · 05/09/2006 21:44

No, I just don't think it is right to show someone dying on TV!

tortoisesdonotwearshoes · 05/09/2006 21:45

If it was his final wishes for it to be broadcast then his family feel they have to honour that.
We all have the choice to watch it or not.
Still so very sad about it.

Blondilocks · 05/09/2006 21:47

It is really sad. He's the kind of person that you don't expect to die IYSWIM (although obviously everyone does at some point). He always seemed so cheerful in his programmes too (when most would be scared witless).

redbull · 05/09/2006 21:47

a family member emailed me the picture of bbc news room with sting ray i deleted it straight away and phoned them told them i thought it was sick and horrid and very distastefull, what kind of world are we living in where people find laughs at woman losing her 44year old husband and 2 little children have lost their father

kimi · 05/09/2006 22:13

not the sort of thing you would want your kids to see, dont think i could look either.

mummyto2littleprincess · 05/09/2006 22:50

im sooo sorry for what i said
i read it wrong i thought they were sayin his so so ffs shut up going on about it thats what i thought the said im very very sorry but now i see they were telling people who was sayin nasty things about it to shut up

I think even if there were a core of truth in these critical remarks about him, I can't see the point of them. He's dead, FFS. Give it a rest

Greensleeves · 05/09/2006 23:03

No problem, forget about it - I thought it was probably a mistake - am relieved it was!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/09/2006 23:12

No need for a "Greensleeves is INNOCENT" thread then?

Good on ya mt2lp.

mummyto2littleprincess · 05/09/2006 23:30

sorry but there people on here who said nasty things he was brill and will me missed by loads
i still cant belive it
once again sorry

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/09/2006 23:31

There were, you are right. It was unnecessary.

The mix up was unfortunate

mummyto2littleprincess · 05/09/2006 23:33

he was a very brave man i would hate to see the footage of it people are sick who watch a poor brave man died

mymama · 06/09/2006 02:28

Thomcat - it would be fitting for him to have a state funeral as he was huge here in queensland. Amongst everything else he did - conservation, face of Australian Quarantine, Australian of the Year etc etc etc he did so much with our schools and the schools are actually providing counselling to children as they are so devastated and upset. My son's prepatory class had a letter from him just last week. Our schools regularly had excursions to his zoo (only 50 mins away). I can only imagine the family must want to grieve privately, but the reaction and distress is immense here in Sunshine Coast/Brisbane.

Sandcastles · 06/09/2006 03:24

i remember the first time i watched him on T.V. DH and i sat open mouthed as this crazy guy pulled a 12 foot croc out of the water, looked at the camera and said, "hes a little bit cranky"!!!!! (Kimi)

Sums him up, doesn't it. He was a great man, thought I'd read it wrong, or got him mixed up with someone else when I first read it. It's all over the papers here, naturally.

A friend who was with him at the time said he (Steve)pulled the barb out, then he died. Jeez...can't believe I'm welling up as I write this.

He was filming a part of a show he was doing with Bindi. Hopefully, through her & Bob, his legend will live on.

Condolances to the family.

Sandcastles · 06/09/2006 03:38

Why do certain people have to speculate as to why the stingray attacked? FFS! A man was killed, doing his job, just like police who risks their lives, firefighters, sholdiers. But do they deserve it? Or their wives expect less sympathy? Get a grip...if you can't/don't wabt to morn the man then please...resepect his family & don't post!

I was going to email a link to this thread for his family to see how wel he was thouht of & haow bad he would be missed, but I don't think it's fair to let Terri, Bindi & Bod read such crass remarks!

Sandcastles · 06/09/2006 03:39

excuse spelling, some people make me so mad!

Lsmum · 06/09/2006 07:42

It's just been broadcast on the news here that Steve's family have rejected the idea of a state funeral. They said he was just an ordinary man and that Steve wouldn't have wanted any fuss.

Would you believe that the day after he died, I actually started receiving 'joke' emails about his death, with pictures and all. I received another few today from the same person and I'm on the verge of telling this person how horrified I am that they're sending out such insensitive, bad-taste stuff so soon after his death. Some people really amaze me .

MegaLegs · 06/09/2006 09:50

My link is just to a news item saying that the footage might be shown on tv. I would never post anything upsetting or tasteless!

MegaLegs · 06/09/2006 09:51

Sorry, should have made it more obvious in the post.

Pfer · 06/09/2006 10:15

DH and I were watching TV last night and he suddenly piped up, out of the ble, no warning, no prior conversation that Steve's death has upset quite a lot. He said that he's thought SI was one of those people who always had luck on his side and would always be ok. That it's all a bit surreal. Glad he said it really, meant it wasn't just me. Still today.

jaamy · 06/09/2006 16:47

Can't believe that I'm so upset about the death of someone that I never saw in RL. Just goes to show what an effect Steve Irwin's had on people. RIP Steve. Actually, that's probably the last thing he'd want. Very, very sad for his family though I'm sure they'd rather he died the way he did rather than in a plane crsh or something.

ssd · 06/09/2006 16:49

we're watching his life story on animal planet just now.

very nice bloke with a lovely and close family

very very sad for them

Alibaldi · 06/09/2006 16:50

Still can't believe it myself. The boys used to love watching him on Animal Planet. So very very
