Just heard on the news that Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter" has died in a diving accident. He was stung through the heart by a stingray.

How tragic and sad

The BBC link says his family have been told.

Spagblog · 04/09/2006 08:33

Shocking isn't it. I when I saw the news I thought it must have been a snake bite or crocodile incident.
Poor chap, he was so enthusiastic wasn't he.

I'm sorry. BUt is this really a tragedy? I mean the guy played with dangerous animals for a living.
It's sad for his family though.

purplemonkeydishwasher IMO yes it is a tragedy yes it was his choice of career but there's lots of people who's choice of career involves dangerous machinery and if they were to get killed by this would you say it wasn't a tragedy?

tortoise · 04/09/2006 08:43

Of course its a tradgedy. He did a lot for wildlife and certainly showed my dc alot about animals. The more unusual ones as well as ones we know.
Its so very sad.

redbull · 04/09/2006 08:43

heard about 1/2 an hour ago, this is so sad just cant beleave it he was passionate in what he beleaved in and its said to be the first time in australia someone has died from a sting ray, ds loved watching him with the crocs, my heart goes out to his family.
just cant imagine a world with out him

hulababy · 04/09/2006 08:44

I always thing it is sad and tragic if someone so young dies, especially leaving a young family.

noddyholder · 04/09/2006 08:44

It is a tragedy because he risked his own life to bring us this information about crocodiles etc.If people didn't go out on a limb like this we would never see these things.really sad about his wife though poor woman.(although I can't help feeling that when the initial sadness subsides his friends and family will probably be happy he died right in there doing something he loved)

MrsFio · 04/09/2006 08:49

omg how could they have announced it before telling his family

Poor bloke, its made me really sad)

Wisp · 04/09/2006 08:53

His wife is on holiday in the US at the moment. Really sad. He was filming a documentary at the time too.

tigi · 04/09/2006 08:56

This has made me feel really sad. The kids loved him on tv...

eidsvold · 04/09/2006 08:56

it is a tragedy - we have a man who was passionate about Australian fauna esp. - very unique. His family - parents and such have invested a lot of money and time into rescuing wildlife and buying up large tracts of land in order to preserve species that were threatened.

He believed in conservation through education.

Yes he was larger than life and sometimes even cringeworthy BUT he has given so much to this country and to the animal world.

aragon · 04/09/2006 09:00

According to what I've read it was a freak accident. he was filming an underwater documentary and didn't see the stingray and it obviously didn't see him until the last minute so lashed out. A larger than life personality - he'll be missed that's for sure. My Mum has always adored him and is heartbroken.
My thoughts and best wishes are going out to his wife and children.. The only comfort is that his death would have been instantaneous with that type of injury so hopefully he didn't suffer.

hunkermunker · 04/09/2006 09:02

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 04/09/2006 09:08

dh loved watching him. His poor family.

nutcracker · 04/09/2006 09:23

OMG that is awful. My kids loved watching his programmes and he seemed like such a nice man and a loving dad/husband.

StrawberryMoon · 04/09/2006 09:24

how sad

southeastastra · 04/09/2006 09:29

it's so sad he was very young. on tv they said that stingrays would do anything to avoid an attack. i hope he didn't hold onto it.

JessaJam · 04/09/2006 09:30

I'm unexpectedly upset by this. Not just for his wife and child (which is sort of an automatic sorrow, regardless of who it actually is IYKWIM)but I am actually genuinely . The guy was a bit of a nutter, and I didn't always agree 100% with his techniques (well of course the snake wants to bite you Steve, you are dragging it backwards by it's tail...) but he seemed like a genuine enthusiast and basically a nice guy.
Plus DH wanders around saying "B-yuuuuu-tifil plumage" all the time tahnsk to him!

MamaG · 04/09/2006 09:32
