Just heard on the news that Steve Irwin "The Crocodile Hunter" has died in a diving accident. He was stung through the heart by a stingray.

His poor family.

I find his death really tragic purely because I think he died too soon
I feel exactly the same about the 14 men killed in Afghanistan who also leave behind families, children and lovers - such senseless deaths.

BudaBabe · 04/09/2006 19:58

Very sad. Saw it on news this morning and couldn't believe it.

He was such a larger than life character that you couldn't imagine anything "besting" him. Seems like a tragic accident.

Feel so sorry for his wife and children.

And for all the other children who loved him on TV and for whom this may well be their first experience of death of a TV personality that they knew well.

LadyTophamHatt · 04/09/2006 20:04

Just reading the news again and it really does seem liek a totally freak accident...it said a stingray barb isn't enough to kill anyone. It's extremley painful to be stung by one but is not fatal. Removing the barb is always what causes the most damage.

He died swimming over the top of it and the barb shot up which then punctured his chest and heart.
Basically leaving a big hole as the barb came out.
He was dead before any paramedics got there.

Pretty instantly I would imagine. Had he been stung anywhere else I assume he would have survived.

Horrible way to die, even if he was doing what he loved doing......

PanicPants · 04/09/2006 20:08

Very sad, and tragic.

Pinkchampagne · 04/09/2006 20:11

So sad. I liked watching him. I feel for his poor wife & children.

CaptainDippy · 04/09/2006 20:21

Good post kimi Also agree with what Mercy said too - that it is a reminder than we cannot control nature. He was a lovely, colourful man with a fabtastic personality - he did so much for conservation etc in Oz - Big respect. I'll miss his mad programmes!!! Thoughts and Prayers are with his poor widow Terri and his children, Bindi and Bob. xx

Nice.

MatNanPlus · 04/09/2006 20:54

I saw him and Terri do the live show at Australia Zoo in 2005, he was so charasmatic and had such passion for animals which Terri and Bindi shared.

A great loss.

jollymum · 04/09/2006 21:20

Watching Animal Planet now-story about him and his family. Didn't know that his mum and dad were conservationist's too. Early footage of him and Terri

misdee · 04/09/2006 21:27

when itold peter and becky (new carer) that steve had died, he said 'what animal got him?' both were totally shocked when i said it was a sting ray, they thought ti would've been a croc or snake.

totally freak acident by the sounds of it. really feel for his family at this time

One of my boys is breaking his heart about Steve, he has watched him avidly for 6 years and has dreamed that one day he might be able to work with him. He really cried so much this morning for a little 8 yr old. It is very very sad, I can feel for Teri and the children, sudden death as I know is such a shock, they are in my thoughts and prayers tonight.

coderoo · 04/09/2006 22:30

og h god sober not you
all of it

eidsvold · 04/09/2006 23:24

there is a real sadness here today in Aus but especially Queensland. Dh and I have been to Aussie zoo a number of times and were fortunate to see Steve adn his two kids on our last visit last year.

I lie about 1 hours drive from where Steve grew up and lived. He had a real passion for animals, wildlife and that is something to be admired in today's society where most of us have very little passion about anything.

He gave so much more to the community he lived in and to the animal world - so much more than we will ever know and will ever be revealed.

For me what is so telling - he grewu p with his parents being the original founders of what was then the Beerwah reptile park and took it on to bigger and better things. He was such a success in the US before he ever became the successhe is now in Aus. He could have walked away set up in the US and made a pile BUT he chose to stay in the community that had in essence helped raise him and shaped him.

He was lucky enough to meet an amazing woman who shared his vision and passion for animals and create a larger family that was the Zoo family and production company.

He gave back so much more than he ever took.

He was the genuine article. He left no music in his heart when he went - we were lucky enough to share that with him whilst he lived.

I just feel the world is a little sadder, a little emptier today for having lost such a genuine character in a time full of such falsity and superficiality.

triplets · 04/09/2006 23:32

Beautifully said, I can`t stp thinking about him.

MistressMary · 04/09/2006 23:33

I was really upset this am, more so for his family.

He was funny and passionate guy who clearly loved his job.

mymama · 05/09/2006 00:41

For the posters who can't say something nice - don't say anything at all! A wife and 2 children just lost the husband/father they idolised.

sunchowder · 05/09/2006 01:49

I have been so very sad about this all day long. Unbelieveable, isn't it? I was so stunned to hear this. I feel sympathy for his family most of all and all of the children that have grown to love seeing him on Television. He made a difference in this life and I find that really honorable. He will be missed and I myself will miss his crazy mug too.

hannahsaunt · 05/09/2006 09:19

Dh and I were v sad esp as ds1 was on at us all year to go to Australia Zoo and we resisted; now he won't be there . We remember him from being on the Really Wild Show many moons ago (and thought Chris Packham was quite harsh on Radio 4). Thoughts are with all the family.

Ds1 on the other hand was terribly matter of fact when we told him about it and wanted to know all about death by stingray and whether or not it thought the underwater camera was a big gun that had come to shoot it. Such is life when you're 5.

hannahsaunt · 05/09/2006 09:20

Meant to add that Andrew Denton described SI as being someone who lived his life in capital letters - thought that really summed him up.

laudaud · 05/09/2006 10:11

Before visiting Australia Zoo I just thought Steve Irwin was a showman that took crazy risks. But having seen what they do at Australia Zoo I realised the amount of respect that he had for animals. As for the incident feeding the croc with his baby son, apparently the camera angle used made it look like he was much closer than he really was.
Truly a tragedy
Condolences to Teri and her 2 children

HellKat · 05/09/2006 10:26

Was totally gutted yesterday to hear of this. Still think we're all in shock.
My thoughts are with his family.
He will be greatly missed.

mummyto2littleprincess · 05/09/2006 18:44

Greensleeves · 05/09/2006 18:45
