LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways said on Thursday that no hand baggage would be allowed on any of its planes leaving UK airports, after British police said they had disrupted a plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight.

A number of people in the London area had been arrested, police said.

"British Airways, acting on instruction from the UK Government, wishes to advise passengers that no items of hand baggage can be carried on board any aircraft departing any UK airport," the airline said in an e-mailed statement.

swedishmum · 10/08/2006 09:40

theladyvanishes · 10/08/2006 09:44

lanismum · 10/08/2006 10:07

god this is scary stuff, im so glad we have no plans to fly this year, i feel so sorry for all the people that have to fly with babies and young kids, but its such a relief that its been stopped.

GrinaFraud · 10/08/2006 10:15

My sister is Cabin crew. she was meant to be home last night at around 11;30pm.

she is still in Milan as they have stopped all flights for a while ;ast night due to the attack- and prevention.

I dont know if she is even home now!

Such measures will only be short term and its just because when attacks like this fail there is usualy a back up team that are ready to go and try again within a few days.

When she gets home i shall let you know what her interpretation of the rules are....hopefully hse will give a clearer idea as to what will and wont be allowed.

Jaysecond · 10/08/2006 10:15

'25 people reported now to have been arrested overnight, in the London Manchester and Birmingham area, All British Muslims,21 still remaining in custody'

ProfessorGrammaticus · 10/08/2006 10:49

Oh bugger. I know this is a bit trivial - but a 4hr flight with 2 kids and no distractions?

La la la la I'm not listening

schneebly · 10/08/2006 10:51

I am due to fly from Glasgow to Luton tommorow - not worried about hand luggage as not taking kids but do you think there will be big delays are airports that weren't targetted?

expatinscotland · 10/08/2006 10:59

Haven't flown in over 4 years, since all this crap started.

seb1 · 10/08/2006 11:03

Glasgow are only allowing passengers into the trminal atm

schneebly · 10/08/2006 11:04

FoghornLeghorn · 10/08/2006 11:07

schneebly you can pop over and say Hi while you're here in sunny ol' Luton.
They haven't confirmed yet whether these measures are for today only or if they will be ongoing
