LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways said on Thursday that no hand baggage would be allowed on any of its planes leaving UK airports, after British police said they had disrupted a plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight.

A number of people in the London area had been arrested, police said.

"British Airways, acting on instruction from the UK Government, wishes to advise passengers that no items of hand baggage can be carried on board any aircraft departing any UK airport," the airline said in an e-mailed statement.

is anything ever going to stop these fanatics. Surely it will be only a matter of time before they are successful.... we can only thank for the success of the police and security services for foiling this plot...and to think that these fanatics are born & bred in the UK..what makes them want to turn against their own country...have we really become such an awful "race" of people that we cannot tolerate each others differences, it makes me want to cry....

I just read that if you require sanitary products, these also need to be unwrapped and in a clear bag. {shudder} Imagine having to parade the fact that the painters are in to an entire departure lounge!!

Bozza · 10/08/2006 11:25

Hmm geekgrrl - one more advantage of a mooncup.

{snurk} am wondering whether I could smuggle some toys onto the plane that way.

(just kidding - my pelvic floor ain't what it used to be, but it's not that bad)

Steppy1 · 10/08/2006 11:27

geekgirl you just made my DH laugh out loud with your referal to "painters are in".......

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 11:28

The painters will be in for me too!

MoiAussi · 10/08/2006 11:29

LOL at mooncup comment CF - what's weird is that I had exactly the same thought when they mentioned 'sanitary items' were permitted.... lots of grubby fingered security guards going 'what's this love!'

babyonboard · 10/08/2006 11:40

This is really scary, and what a nightmare travelling with a baby/kids and no entertainment for them. My cousin is flying to japan in a couple of weeks with her 2 yo , that will be awful!

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 11:42

maybe I should pack soem mooncups, I think they might jsut keep the dts entertained!

NotQuiteCockney · 10/08/2006 11:42

Surely you'd just wear your mooncup on?

Ahem.

No, I'm still covering my ears and singing:

"la la la la la la"

babyonboard · 10/08/2006 11:43

or get creative with tampons and baby wipes..hmm

DumbledoresGirl · 10/08/2006 11:43

I see you are allowed to carry on baord keys so anyone with a baby to entertain, take some keys with you (whether you want them or not) as babies love that sort of thing. What else? How about some tampons which older children could adopt and turn into fluffy mice?

DumbledoresGirl · 10/08/2006 11:44

Great minds think alike BabyOnBoard!

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 11:45

mine actually love purses full of credit cards too!

shhhh · 10/08/2006 11:54

Apparently no tots or books are allowed and you are not even allowed to buy items on the otherside before you board..well you can buy them but you can't take them on board. Apparently even boefore you check further security checks are being done but it's not being relased yet to the press what these checks are.

I suppose a few hours flight if managable with a lo BUT I feel sorry for those on long haul flights. On sky news they interviewed a family who were boarding a flight to america with 2 lo's..Their concern was over entertainment NOT worry about terrosists .

I'm worried as dh is on his way to Estonia for a stag weekend today. He called me from manchester airport saying they were possibly being delayed for up to 5 hours..His mobile has to be placed into his luggage so I have not heard a word since. I'm sure he's ok, prob not aware of my worry here at home but I hate him flying without dd & I...

BTW those of you with pushchair concerns etc..you are allowed them but they must be xrayed and checked thoroughly.

TBH I know it's all an inconvenience to those who are flying or waiting to fly but it has to be done...I would rather have my "personals" in a bag then it be me ending up in a bag iykwim...

shhhh · 10/08/2006 11:55

meant to say "toys"

NotQuiteCockney · 10/08/2006 11:58

Thank god for seat-back entertainment systems, eh?

joelallie · 10/08/2006 11:58

Yeuccchhh at having to taste baby milk..... it stinks!

Sorry. Irrelevant and a bit irreverent too. I really feel for any of you having to fly soon with or without kids.

lanismum · 10/08/2006 11:59

are you allowed to take a pen or pencil on board, maybe older kids could be entertained with drawing games? might keep them occupied for a little while?

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 12:00

no.

shhhh · 10/08/2006 12:01

Just remembered..The airlines targeted were:
American Airlines
United Airlines
Continental Airlines

lanismum · 10/08/2006 12:01

what if you are taking expressed milk on board for your baby, will you have to taste that? what if you are allergic to milk? why am i thinking of these problems, im not even flying

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 12:01

last tiem we went they had kids packs with colouring stuff in them. Hope they do this time. The airlines are prob going to make a fortune out of this, will have to buy toys, drinks, snacks etc.
