LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways said on Thursday that no hand baggage would be allowed on any of its planes leaving UK airports, after British police said they had disrupted a plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight.

A number of people in the London area had been arrested, police said.

"British Airways, acting on instruction from the UK Government, wishes to advise passengers that no items of hand baggage can be carried on board any aircraft departing any UK airport," the airline said in an e-mailed statement.

that's gonna be a bugger for those of us due to fly soon with kids...

200 passengers have been evacuated from a plane because of a threatening letter found on board.

Twiga · 10/08/2006 13:08

Been watching news and just realised that the street that's refered to in High Wycombe is where my Aunt stays - house involved is about 10 doors or so away from her .

wannaBe1974 · 10/08/2006 13:17

grr why is it, and I mean no disrespect to any americans on here, but why is it that when these sorts of things happen, the american politicians come on and talk about 911 and how this plot is just another threat against Americans. I feel for those who lost relatives in 911, I really do, but the plot was foiled in this country, if they'd carried it through, a hell of a lot more brittish would have been killed than Americans, and yet America have to turn it into their crisis. Rant over now sorry.

waswondering
Ryanair have said that they're going to suspend their baggage charges.

mummy23 · 10/08/2006 13:25

I cant believe they are starting again.
I am going with bil to gatwick because ds1+2 are suppose to be coming back today with nanny and grandad (no delays as of yet?)

I couldnt believe what i saw this morning, but i suppose there is a good way at looking at things, at least they caught them before they managed to blow up a plane!

prettybird · 10/08/2006 13:26

I think I heard someone saying that they were adding something on to your baggage allowance. Didn't really take notice as it dind't affect me, as I only had "hand" luggage (my laptop, working papers plus my handbag)

TutterOtsky · 10/08/2006 13:26

waswondering - i checked flybe's site and they aren't charging for checking in bags (they normally do)

sm - he came back from Dublin last night and was meant to go to Germany for the day early this morning, but he got back to find that the battery in his car is bu$$ered so he cancelled so that he could get it sorted today. Lucky in a way!

lillabean · 10/08/2006 13:33

wannabe,

according to British and American officials, all the planes that were targeted were American carriers.

London is one of the largest international hubs in the world, people from many, many nationalities would have been killed.

But, hey, if you really need this to be your crisis- your very welcome to it.

out of curiosity, which American politician was making the comments you were refering to?

babyonboard · 10/08/2006 13:35

It's really strange, as I couldn't sleep last night and was watching all the planes through our living room window. Odd as living in London there are dozens of them every hour and I never even notice them
It is really scary, but some small comfort is that it will be safer than ever for those flying soon..

wannaBe1974 I heard that on five live as well any updates yet.

wannaBe1974 · 10/08/2006 14:00

the airlines are allowing an extra 10 kg baggage allowance.

Imo we should feel safer today than we did yesterday - it shows that the security forces are working.

But on the other hand, how long will it be before a plot gets through, because it will happen.

mummydear · 10/08/2006 14:00

The American Politcian who probably made the ccomments was Homeland Secretary Chercoff. I know there was a live briefing from him on five live around 1pm news time. Didn't catch all that he said.

wannaBe1974 · 10/08/2006 14:01

oh and sky news had the ultimate headline this morning "mid-air explosions". how responsible is that! if you'd woken up to hear that you'd be thinking something had happened until you got into the main news broadcast.

wannaBe1974 · 10/08/2006 14:03

he did at least express a bit of realism when a journalist asked him if the attacks were scheduled to happen on september the 11th. He said that these groups don't go in for anniversaries so was unlikely.

Crystaltips · 10/08/2006 14:59

Our internal flight was canceled - kids hoping to go and see grandparents for a week

There goes my week of freedom

Earlybird · 12/08/2006 02:59

Has any Mumsnetter flown internationally since the arrests on Thursday? Hoping for some firsthand experiences that will give details about what to expect. We're due to fly transatlantic in 3 weeks time.....

dejags · 12/08/2006 04:43

what about dummies and comforters?

DS2 will go ballistic if he cannot take his dummy and his baby (teddy) with him when we fly in two weeks' time.

We aren't flying transatlantic (Sydney to Beijing) so perhaps it wont be as strict?

Alibaldi · 12/08/2006 05:08

I would recommend that all those flying check with airline beforehand. At the moment, Uk is no handbaggage, other than allowed in clear plastic bag, no mobiles, no liquid of any description, open packs of tissues, no laptops or other electrical. Babies you're allowed to take milk and nappies as required but all open and milk tasted in front of security. It may seem all a big nuisance but let us all be so grateful that it was hopefully stopped in time and we can fly safely. May I add that the US has always been far more diligent and has been x-raying shoes since the Shoe bomber unlike heathrow. I hope you all have stress free travel.

threebob · 12/08/2006 05:15

If you can't take a pen on board - how do you fill in your immigration forms?

Do the flight crew have one and you all have to take turns?

Am hoping that these procedures do not become standard for ever and ever, as due to allergies the airlines can't feed ds and I and so even going to Australia from NZ could be a very hungry experience. I hope they put water dispensers in departure lounges.

Alibaldi · 12/08/2006 05:27

Hi Threebob, lol at the pen, pretty sure as it's visible in the bag it'll be okay, but hey I'm sure the stewards/esses will have one. Seriously though I've seen that those will allergies can take on what is required i.e essntial non prescription.

MadamePlatypus · 12/08/2006 08:56

With this baby milk thing, how are people keeping the milk cool if it is already made up? I think I might be giving extended breastfeeding a go for no. 2!

RTKangaMummy · 12/08/2006 13:45

In sydney it says nothing for handluggage apart from wallet, passport and tickets

You can take tissues and sanitary stuff out of boxes

baby milk must be tasted by parent

This is from a notice at our hotel
