LONDON (Reuters) - British Airways said on Thursday that no hand baggage would be allowed on any of its planes leaving UK airports, after British police said they had disrupted a plot to blow up aircraft in mid-flight.

A number of people in the London area had been arrested, police said.

"British Airways, acting on instruction from the UK Government, wishes to advise passengers that no items of hand baggage can be carried on board any aircraft departing any UK airport," the airline said in an e-mailed statement.

6 planes were targetted

I am upset because my dh is currently in the States, due at Heathrow tomorrow morning. This means he isn't going to come doesn't it?

FoghornLeghorn · 10/08/2006 09:08

Sky news website says there we plans for 20 planes to be brought down over UK and US cities - 20 people arrested in London last night.
There was also a United Airlines flight turned around midflight last week on its was to USA from UK as 'undesirables' had boarded without anyone noticing

geekgrrl · 10/08/2006 09:08

ah sh*t. The airline I'm supposed to be flying with (Air Berlin) have cancelled all their flights to the UK today.

Very annoying about the hand luggage and pushchair situation. Dd2 has SN and uses a SN pushchair, and even those are banned.
Plus she completely freaked on the flight out here (screaming in terror for 20 mins) so was hoping to be able to distract her with some new toys. Guess not.

mummydear · 10/08/2006 09:08

Afraid so DumbledoresGirl -- Unless flight is already inbound all flights into UK are cancelled .

southeastastra · 10/08/2006 09:10

blimey it's scary and always seems to happen on thursdays

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 09:11

not seeing any here neither, have been loads going over lately. (ascot)

airy · 10/08/2006 09:12

Pushchairs go into the hold anyway though don't they geekgrrl? Does it mean they have to be checked in with luggage and can't be kept whilst in the airport?
DD also in major buggy and that will be a massive pain the a** if we have to do that!

geekgrrl · 10/08/2006 09:13

airy, they do generally but as dd's is classed as a wheelchair we keep it all the way up to the plane and also get it back there usually. Guess not this time.......

geekgrrl · 10/08/2006 09:13

just read your post again... sounds like you'll have the same problem then.

Furball · 10/08/2006 09:14

With the tasting milk thing. Surely a babys bottle will be sterile. How will the parent taste it without contaminating it? and if it was a harmful substance would a small mouthful do you any harm?

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 09:14

I guess she can't use a standard wheelchair? they are only allowing airport ones.

NedKelly1978 · 10/08/2006 09:14

I don't even like milk, wll prob throw up over them!

Pisces · 10/08/2006 09:15

Just confirmed, Heathrow is now CLOSED.

Furball · 10/08/2006 09:15

meaning if someone wanted to disguise whatever as a bottle of milk - would a small taste matter to the person owning it?

geekgrrl · 10/08/2006 09:16

I guess so. What's good about the one we have is the kiddy board for ds (who's 2 and likes to run off). It'll be ok - dd can walk, they just all run off in different directions IYSWIM.

My sympathies to all the Mumsnetters with dps due to fly back home.

Bozza · 10/08/2006 09:16

Good points furball. That is just what it said on Radio 5. And they interviewsd a woman travelling with a 5yo (for whom she was allowed nothing) and a baby and she had had to taste the milk and just take enough nappies/wipes for the journey.

foxinsocks · 10/08/2006 09:20

heard the police helicopters overhead last night (we are quite close to Heathrow) so I wondered what had gone on

thank goodness they foiled the plot - I did hear earlier that they were still looking for some people connected with it

wannaBe1974 · 10/08/2006 09:20

no heathrow is closed to incoming flights that are not in the air, not closed to outgoing.

Jaysecond · 10/08/2006 09:21

all inbound fights to Heathrow, other than those currently in the air, have been cancelled, other airports expected to follow suit..............

foxinsocks · 10/08/2006 09:22

I have seen one or two taking off (I imagine they have to clear a space for any that are mid air and haven't landed)

wannaBe1974 · 10/08/2006 09:22

ryan air have cancelled all flights up till 12:30

Jaysecond · 10/08/2006 09:24

plus, 10 mins from Heathrow here, no planes going over, and also heard the police helicopter last night, whist the police managed to foil a terroist atempt, look at the disruption the buggers have caused......mind you better disruption than explosions
