Spy scandal - anyone bothered by the US government sweeping through *everything* we do online..?

Seems Uncle Sam can just hoover up data from Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Apple, Youtube and the rest. US govt is busy reassuring Americans this 'only' applies to foreigners. Like us.

One boffin interviewed on Channel Four news said they may look for keywords like 'Iran' - so if you've ever commented on a thread about Iran, people working for that nice Mr Obama may have been watching...

OP posts:

I have worked out that you are probably black, and been in this country for a while.

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 12:33

I can neither admit or deny that.

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 12:43

SirChin - In answer to your question, Ilike is trying to make the point that her and her cohort are a bunch of people who think that the NSA and other MNetters give a feck what I/we post on MN.

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 12:44

allbie

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 12:46

'allbie'???

Even by your standards, that is weird.

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 13:01

Realised I have that wrong Grin
Never mind!

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 13:02

Spies often give out wrong information!

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 13:18

So all this loon stuff is part of the misdirection?

SirChenjin · 13/06/2013 13:20

So - was it misinformation or disinformation??!

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 13:23

Who is the spy in this conversation? You or me?

SirChenjin · 13/06/2013 13:27

Is Allbie the codeword??

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 13:27

I am the spy obviously. Though not the best one in the world! Grin
Still working on it. May find it, hopefully.

SirChenjin · 13/06/2013 13:34

I think you would be collecting your P45 in the spy world at the moment Grin

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 13:51

If the NSA spies are of the same calibre then we have nothing to worry about Grin

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 14:03

I am going to have to admit temporary defeat for the moment.

ivykaty44 · 13/06/2013 14:28

but ahhabadabbadoo it would not be detective work for these organisations - they know how much is on your bank account

and that is the point

most of us want to have privacy even if you don't

so why not just post how much money you have on here now - as what is the difference between us knowing and the government and the USA government?

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 15:01

I'm not going to volunteer my personal info to you or the NSA but if either party want to find out what's in my bank account then don't let me stop you.

I suggest you speak to Ilikethebreeze. She is currently trawling MN for that info

ivykaty44 · 13/06/2013 15:17

so you do care then about your privy habbadabba, or is it a case of if i bury my head in the sand and pretend it isn't happening then It doesn't matter?

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 15:25

You post regularly as someone else, dont you habba.

SirChenjin · 13/06/2013 15:33

Why do think that the authorities might want to know what is going on in some people's bank accounts?

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 15:45

Blackmail
Extortion
Theft
Illegal activities
links to "difficult" countries
links to "difficult" people
sheer fun of it
thats off the top of my head.

inbloomin · 13/06/2013 17:52

@mathanxiety

Really?
Could you [be tried in a secret court where you aren't allowed to know what the evidence against you is]?

The Special Immigration Appeals Court (SIAC) is an example of a court where defendants are tried in secret without full access to the evidence against them, see news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/3666235.stm.

There have been various other proposals/attempts to establish courts where some/all evidence is held in secret, see e.g. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9114905/Government-faces-revolt-over-secret-justice-expansion.html

In the case of SIAC, this only applies to non-UK nationals. Apparently this is okay, because as we all know, all terrorists are foreigners, or something.

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 18:00

This OP is about the NSA having access to our personal info. So why do people keep asking me how I would feel if the telephone repair man or MNetters or my neighbor...or .... got hold of my personal info?

It's two different conversations but this doesnt seem to stop people from taking my comments about scenario one, applying it to scenario two and going Gotcha!

HabbaDabbaDoo · 13/06/2013 18:05

Ilike - I see that doing a search on my nickname was the limit to your spying skills.

Ilikethebreeze · 13/06/2013 18:51

Silly me. You are American yourself.
