Charlie Hebdo publishes satirical cartoons

No-one catch this little gem? The mag in question has a long track record for publishing offensive satirical cartoons featuring religious and other figures and decided to give the prophet Mohammed the same treatment this week, depicting him in the buff. On the one hand they're showing no fear or favour and it's a noble stand for free speech, on the other you can't help wondering if they haven't just poked an already angry dog with a very big stick.

OP posts:

This is dreadful. I consider myself to be a v tolerant type, but this kind of thing makes me feel increasingly islamophobic.

If I lived in a society whose values offend me, I would move to another society.

Appalling.

SeasonsEatings · 07/01/2015 16:42

CogitoErgoSometimes is a legend and speaks wise words on here, I wasn't a member of this site in 2012 but it seems that her OP has indeed turned very relevant today.

mrsruffallo · 07/01/2015 16:44

Sorry LEM, i I won't be going out of my way not to ' offend' extremists or ' give them an excuse to murder'.

CaptainJamesTKirk · 07/01/2015 16:44

You're talking utter shit LEM and I am reading your simplistic arguments with absolute disgust. 12 people are DEAD, over a picture and your argument is essentially that we should have respected their faith and it wouldn't have happened? Go and do some reading and get informed will you ffs!

Well said!

badtime · 07/01/2015 16:45

lesmis against their religion to produce images of the prophet.

Well then, as Muslims they shouldn't produce images of the prophet.

They cannot expect to tell others to follow the teachings of their religion, any more than American evangelicals should be able to ban abortion of gayness just because it conflicts with their religious views.

So it is a bit different from taking the piss out of the Catholic church.

Actually, blasphemy and heresy carried the death penalty in the past, and are still very much 'against the religion' for catholics. It is just that most catholics don't care.

badtime · 07/01/2015 16:48

Sorry, I misread your name LEM

hackmum · 07/01/2015 17:11

'On the one hand they're showing no fear or favour and it's a noble stand for free speech, on the other you can't help wondering if they haven't just poked an already angry dog with a very big stick.'

Very prophetic indeed. And perhaps the answer is: both.

WetAugust · 07/01/2015 17:12

TRAFALGAR Square 1800. Rallies all over Europe being staged this evening.

We need THEM to realise there are too many if US to kill.

ArsenicFaceCream · 07/01/2015 17:15

I find the forced wearing of bureaus VERY offensive

Who's wearing bureaux? And who's forcing them? Link please. Confused

ArsenicFaceCream · 07/01/2015 17:21

It's not "WRONG" to make cartoons of this nature! Murder is WRONG! Gunning down policemen on the street when they try to intervene is WRONG!

Cartoons are opinions. These cartoons did not depict any murderous or barbaric attack. They took the piss out of a religious figure and in doing upset a load of murdering terrorists who want to force their religion onto the rest of the world. Terrorists who see us as less than human and slaughter us accordingly. 12 people were murdered over a piss taking illustration.

Hear bloody hear.

Freedom of speech is far more important than any of the other (somewhat important) debates to be had around the burka, segregated lectures, halal slaughter.

It is central to western democracy.

You don't throw that principle out because various groups complain, much less because some people assert that their religion demands it of all of us.

gazouille · 07/01/2015 17:25

As long as you say that certain groups of people have a "right" to act in a way that is completely out of proportion to any perceived offence, then you perpetuate the over-reaction and, imo, the feeling of grievance.

Wtf. Cue the sheeple who genuinely believe this was an attack carried out by non mind-controlled Muslims because of grievances against Islam. Open your eyes, use your brain. It happens so often, haven't you cottoned on to what is really going on?

CarbeDiem · 07/01/2015 17:30

We need THEM to realise there are too many if US to kill
I agree but I'm scared that they're going to have a fucking good go at trying.
Also agree with the fact it's just a cartoon If someone doesn't like it then don't look at it and ignore it - it's really quite simple.

It doesn't matter what they do, these evil terrorist bastards will never take away our freedom of speech. How dare they try.

RIP all victims.

Nancy66 · 07/01/2015 17:48

To all the apologists

WetAugust · 07/01/2015 17:49

Don't be scared. Be angry at the politicians who have tried to appease them by pretending that there is no threat or who have used participation in wars to pretend they are doing so to keep our streets safe. It's all lies

The politicians will now have to wake up and start taking this threat as seriously as they take other threats to the people of Britain. It's no good having our armed forces spread around the world when the real threat is already amongst us.

LaChatte · 07/01/2015 17:49

^^this

LaChatte · 07/01/2015 17:54

FWIW I'm in France, and without any exception all my Muslim friends are beyond horrified with what has happened. I recall some of them them being offended by the cartoon two years ago, but only to the extent grumbling about it a bit and maybe calling for people to boycott the paper via FB.

This is the act of a tiny MINORITY, the extremists, is does not reflect the feelings of the majority of Muslims.

ArsenicFaceCream · 07/01/2015 17:57

gaz there's something wrong with the way you're brain works.

ArsenicFaceCream · 07/01/2015 17:58

WetAugust · 07/01/2015 17:59

thousands have turned out in Paris tonight. 10,000 in Lyon. Small number in Trafalgar Square already.

Pegida was already trying yo draw attention to islam infliction in Germany and their marches were regularly attracting 10,000 in Dresden each Monday night. There were terrorist attacks on N antes and Dijon in France in December that the BBC didn't cover very well and which the French authorities wrote off as mentally disturbed people

At least what has been happening for a while is being reported. We need go know what's going on so we can protect ourselves

NickiFury · 07/01/2015 18:00

Gaz clearly we have not "cottoned on". Why don't you explain it to us?

limitedperiodonly · 07/01/2015 18:02

why would you publish to simply cause pain and upset, what was to be gained?

Everything. And they've paid for it.

And what pain, and what upset?

Do you think their murderers were justified Mama1980?

Do you think it was justified for them to injure and then callously murder a policeman who had nothing to do with the argument rather than doing his duty guarding the newspaper office?

ArsenicFaceCream · 07/01/2015 18:18

One of the cartoonists murdered today in France - Charb- had apparently commented on previous threats to his life. This is what he said.

gaz is probably going to tell us it's all a conspiracy perpetrated by < take your pick > to discredit Islam. That's how the script usually goes.

WetAugust · 07/01/2015 18:32

without wanting to sound like Blair there is actually a 3rd way. We could start by beefing up our own internal security. Ban face covering. Make education totally secular. Stop taking 'cultural differences' into account when dealing with child abuse / FGM etc. Start border control as we currently don't have any. Make sheltering g these scum a serious offence.

One culture and that is the British tradition of free speech, democracy and freedom. If you don't like it then you are free to. fuck off to live somewhere where these values are not appreciated. Do not try to change my culture to fit your sick views.
