Youth Centres aren't just about table tennis though.

Sometimes the point of a youth centre is to provide services to young people who have feckless parents who are unable to give them advice about relationships, drugs, education etc. etc. etc.

Similary Sure Start isn't supposed to be about free tumble tots - it's a way of connecting with people from deprived backgrounds before their children get to school.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/09/2012 12:30

I briefly looked through your link Twofingers (it's long) and I will say I was surprised to read that in some areas there is no automatic right for a single person to be provided with shelter if they turn up at the council. I thought they would at least be provided with a B&B. So like I said, I stand corrected, but there are still some services available to those that look for them, albeit charities.

Crime or trouble is irrelevant, it's all anti social. A lack of a youth club is no reason to do either anyway.

I know what 'less than salubrious' areas are like, I was brought up for part of my childhood in Newham!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/09/2012 12:33

Thumb, yes I have, obviously. I think that what is happening is because policies are being badly carried out, not because of the policies themselves. The government has a responsibility to ensure that a better job is done of course, but that doesn't mean that they should scrap the ideas altogether. I would probably agree with many on here about certain things affecting disabled people, but that doesn't mean I think the government is deliberately hating and targeting and attacking disabled people just for fun.

Dawndonna · 05/09/2012 12:34

Yes, they are dying due to poverty, just not necessarily starvation.

Xenia.
We know you've clawed your way up from nothing, but by publicing spouting rubbish such as the right were brought up with manners, you are showing your roots, dear.

merrymouse · 05/09/2012 12:36

"I think the government is deliberately hating and targeting and attacking disabled people just for fun"

No, I'd agree they aren't doing it for fun, I think it's because they are ignorant and don't know their arse from their elbow. But then along with the majority of the rest of the country, I didn't vote for them.

Thumbwitch · 05/09/2012 12:37

But Outraged, the Govt are the ones who have paid ATOS to carry out their bidding - ATOS are in fact doing exactly what their remit was, i.e. cutting down the number of claimants. People are dying before their appeals are heard; people are without money while they await their appeals, and ATOS get paid for the appeals as well.

You have to be able to see that the Govt is in fact behind this, that their policies are causing this.

NanAstley · 05/09/2012 12:41

"Crime or trouble is irrelevant, it's all anti social. A lack of a youth club is no reason to do either anyway."

True. Cameron and Osborne never had to go to a youth club, and look at all the anti-social trouble they caused in the Bullingdon Club.

These are teenagers! Teens from better backgrounds are just as likely to cause mayhem if they are left to their own devices. It is just the fact that the better off can help their teens to develop focus and purpose by enrolling them in music, sports or other classes. The poorer teens do not have this avenue.

I really am leaving this thread now. There is no sense in talking to people who are so sure of their opinion that they cannot see how it is effecting real people.

As you were...

threesocksmorgan · 05/09/2012 12:47

merrymouse thanks I stand corrected,

OwlLady · 05/09/2012 12:50

The cuts to services have had a very negative effect on disabled people and their families and so it continues, and at a local authority level it's even worse. If people are angry it's because they have a right to be.

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 05/09/2012 12:50

Thumb, yes, I just said pretty much what you did. I know the government want to cut down the number of people claiming, but as many disabled people can and do work, and there are fraudulent claims out there (even if not many) I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong with that.

The problem is that the assesment criteria is bollocks and completely irrelevant to people's actual abilities. If they could assess people correctly, which the government is responsible for, then it wouldnt be a problem.

Sparrowp · 05/09/2012 12:50

Ah, George "Recession" Osborne.

Looks like he's had fun with his jolly trip to the Olympics, but when can we get someone who knows what they're doing on the Economy?

OwlLady · 05/09/2012 12:50

Xenia hasn't clawed her way up from nothing, she was privately educated!

seeker · 05/09/2012 12:56

Dawndonna · 05/09/2012 12:56

Roots still showing!

Thumbwitch · 05/09/2012 12:59

Ah ok, Outraged - I didn't read it that you meant the same as I did but fair enough, my mistake.

MammaBrussels · 05/09/2012 13:00

I don't want to derail this thread but to briefly answer Wobbly

  1. You insulted a disabled person for his disability.
  2. Gordon Brown was the leader of the Labour Party, who at the time held a parliamentary majority, therefore he become Prime Minister. He at least had a democratic mandate to act, however weak. There is no democratic mandate for the cuts.
  3. China is the biggest holder of western debt. I don't agree that this means they have us by the short and curlies. There is no scenario where it would be in China's interest to sell of their treasury holdings. It would be disastrous if they did act in such a way but it would just as disastrous for them as it would be for the west.
Xenia · 05/09/2012 13:12

The left are rude and boo. The right are more polite. Does anyone on this thread think it is right to boo at the Olympics, whoever is on t he stand? It's just rudeness.

Labour left the country bankrupt. They proposed 20% cuts and the Coalition have supposedly implemented 25% cuts although in practice much of what they say they are cutting is not cut at all eg massive redundancy pay outs to state workers which are not required by law and not ufture hiring freeze,. I don't think anyone is cutting anything like we need. Hopefully the slightly changed cabinet may be slight more to the right so we can achieve a much smaller state, thus more wealth for everyone and a low flat tax.

seeker · 05/09/2012 13:16

Xenia- usually you try harder. Obviously you don't rate the intelligence of people on this thread very much.

CatPower · 05/09/2012 13:23
