I'm inclined to think things might be different if the roles were reversed.

Why?

chewchewmeaw · 25/03/2012 23:46

Why what? I attached the link - it's pretty clear.

Your link doesn't work.

seeker · 25/03/2012 23:51

Yes,

chewchewmeaw · 25/03/2012 23:58

Apologies about the link. The story is pretty huge right now so there are many sites reporting on this.

Try this link - thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/03/18/446768/what-everyone-should-know-about-about-trayvon-martin-1995-2012/

This stinks to high heaven. They sent a narcotics detective and not a homicide detective to the scene. The police didn't perform a sobriety test on Zimmerman, and they never interviewed Trayvon's girlfriend who was on the phone with him at the time of the shooting.

I am just so angry!

the 911 call on the lady who heard screaming has been recorded and on Youtube.

On the call you can clearly hear someone screaming before a shot goes off. It turns out that the screaming was Trayvon pleading for his life.

Trayvon was also on a call to his girlfriend before he was shot dead and on the call he told her that he was being followed by a strange man. The Girlfriend apparently told him to run but Trayvon said no. He would later end up running as this threatening man approached him.

Even though Trayvon was on a call the police failed to go through his phonce to contact the last person he was speaking to or to find any relatives to get information about the him. Instead they put that poor boy in a body bag and labelled him as a 'John Doe'. Trayvon's father who lived in the Gted community later had to track his son down at the morgue after reporting him missing to the police.

The killer's 911 call was also recorded and on it you can clearly hear him say 'F*king C*n'. This is after he was advised not to follow the alleged suspect.

How anyone can take the above into account and conclude that this teenager's race had nothing to with his murder or the disgraceful way it has been dealt with is beyond me...

Probably yes :( At least its finally been picked up by the mainstream media and politicians - it took a lot of people campaigning just for that to happen. Imagine having to set up a petition to ask that your child's killer be arrested. Angry

mathanxiety · 26/03/2012 00:23

It is 100% because he is black that nothing has been done. Had a really thought-provoking and moving sermon today from a black American priest who spoke of his own experiences as a black man in the US, growing up in a very deprived neighbourhood, and having lived there myself, I can report that racism is alive and kicking. It is part of the wallpaper of American society. Black lives are cheap in the US.

CreepyWeeBrackets · 26/03/2012 00:47

YANBU. It is awful.

There is a thread in the news section and I was utterly shocked reading it. Mentioned it to DH who is usually more up on current events than I am and he was gob-smacked. So was I that he hadn't heard about it. Has this been under-reported?

Trayvon seemed like such a lovely young man, too. What a terrible situation.

gobblegobs · 26/03/2012 01:13

YANBU.
it's every parents' nightmare..
Racism rears it's ugly head evr so often

ItWasABoojum · 26/03/2012 01:15

YANBU - the whole thing is just horrible. Blatant racism, and it's very scary how little it's been reported outside the US.

PurpleRomanesco · 26/03/2012 01:34

YANBU.

:(

CaramelisedOnion · 26/03/2012 01:45

I´m sad to say that I believe 100% that his race is why that piece of shit who killed him is getting away with it.

If that had been a white woman shot by a black man in the same circumstances it would be a VERY different story.

The man who killed that poor boy should be locked away forever and it is disgusting what is going on. Sad

I only hope that somehow he is prosecuted.

FrothyDragon · 26/03/2012 02:16

YANBU.

:(

RIP Trayvon.

nightowlmostly · 26/03/2012 02:25

Of course that's the reason. I can't think of a single other situation in which someone has been killed, the police show up and take the person with the gun's word for what happened, and don't even arrest the guy. He just shot and killed someone for god's sake. In any other circumstance he would be arrested, at least until the police figure out what happened, take statements etc.

You don't even need to go as far as the roles being reversed and a black guy shooting a white guy, although obviously the reaction would have been extremely different. If it was two whites, the one holding the murder weapon would certainly be arrested and questioned.

It is quite shocking though, that in this day and age this can happen, it really shows that the USA (in some states in particular) hasn't come that far since the civil rights movement, when this sort of thing used to happen all the time Sad

Pudgy2011 · 26/03/2012 02:39

It is utterly disgusting. We live in the Caribbean about 500 miles south of Miami so get the Miami local news. As this story unfolds it gets more and more unbelievable! How the police haven't charged this man with murder 1 is beyond me - absolutely premeditated, he had a history of taking his "role" too seriously and it is so tragic that this poor lad lost his life to a gun happy violent mother fucker.
His poor parents must be besides themselves, it's no wonder that the schools are doing walk outs for Trayvon until something gets done. If only the corporate world would do the same, then we might see some justice for him.
I really do pray for that poor family, the hell they must be going through is beyond anything I can comprehend.

FootprintsInTheSnow · 26/03/2012 02:48
Sad
Grumpla · 26/03/2012 03:14

YANBU. I'm holding my beautiful son right now and the thought of how Trayvon's parents must be feeling makes me cry.

To know that your child has been murdered in cold blood by a fucking racist psycho - and then have his murderer protected by the state in that way - so openly, so without any fear of repercussions - are we in 2012 or 1912 FFS? Sad

roundtable · 26/03/2012 03:54

Yanbu

There's an online petition which I've signed.

Horrible. :(

sashh · 26/03/2012 07:19

It's not because he was black - that would make it his fault.

Just like Stephen Lawrence he was killed becuse some members of society think the colour of one's skin makes them superior to other people with a different skin colour.

And just as with Stephen Lawrence a number of people of this view are in the police.

roundtable - could you post a lik to the petition please?

Piggychunk · 26/03/2012 10:31

I think this is the petition www.change.org/petitions/prosecute-the-killer-of-our-son-17-year-old-trayvon-martin

I find the call when you hear this poor child begging for his life so disturbing . Its just so shocking , words do fail me

worldgonecrazy · 26/03/2012 10:40

It is so unbelievable that this could happen, but sadly not surprising. I have signed the petition and encourage others to do the same. Let the Florida law makers know the eyes of the world are on them and this is one they will not be able to sweep under the carpet.

How many events like this have happened but we haven't heard about them because the parents didn't have the right support to make it to the media (reading between the lines his parents are middle-class and educated), or in pre-global communication times?

Anniegetyourgun · 26/03/2012 10:49

To quote Michael Moore, the victim was guilty of Breathing Whilst Black.

DPrince · 26/03/2012 11:41

I was in florida when this happened. YANBU. Its horrendous. The outcome would have been different if a black youth shot a white man.

mayorquimby · 26/03/2012 11:48

why when people are reversing the roles are they using black & white? was the killer not hispanic?
