Diane Abbott....racist comment or not?

I think If you look and consider what she said in the context of the discussuion she was having. I believe she has a very valid point, she did make a generalised remark and by definition that was racist, but, it was in my opinion acceptable for her to generate discussion and break down the barriers that exist (the fear of counter accusations of racism) in discussuing the exposure openly.

Am I mistaken in thinking that it was Abbott that also said something along the lines of - black men don't stay with white women because they have poor hygiene?

ShirleyKnottage · 05/01/2012 13:46

I believe you are mistaken WN.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/01/2012 13:46

I think she is a bloody fool.

Her comments about West Indian mothers were beyond insulting to all the parents that have had it hard and worked hard for their kids.

I listened to her banging on about how hard it was for her as a single parent. Rushing around and just having to be late to pick her child up from after school club. Did it make me think 'good for you, hardworking and commited'? No it made me think 'you selfish mare. You could afford a nanny but you would rather keep miminum wage play staff waiting around for you to pick your kid up'

She has a view of herself as a Stong Black Woman who Tells It Like It Is and is the Voice of Black London.

She isnt. She is a self regarding hypocrite.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/01/2012 13:46

I think I would have remembered that WN

ShirleyKnottage · 05/01/2012 13:50

Totally agree MrsDe.

Her hypocrisy when she sent her son to the City Of London School is just her all over.

I've been having a conversation about this with a friend and although I don't think DA is necessarily a racist.. But I'm just not sure...what she said definitely WAS and so she must be?

WhingingNinja · 05/01/2012 13:50

It may well have been one of those dinner party anecdotes that I have half remembered.

mayorquimby · 05/01/2012 13:53

Not offended because she's fairly irrelevant to me.
Her tweet is clearly racist and her attempt to explain it as being a reference to historical regimes is illogical and just makes her seem less intelligent.
If she was discussing something from 100 years ago in history she wouldn't have used the present tense "white people love to play"
and she also wouldn't have included the #tactic as old as coloniaism. becuase that makes it absolutely redundant if she is discussing, in her own words, "the nature of 19th century colonialism.", because then she is essentially saying 19th century colonialism is as old as 19th century colonialism.

noddyholder · 05/01/2012 13:54

She did say something on a late night news prog re white women's abilities as mothers and also some sort of hygiene comment iirc.

mayorquimby · 05/01/2012 13:56

also don't try and rely on "bit much to get into 140 characters" when she had more than enough characters left over to insert "some white people..." or "historically white people have..."
She could probably have even gotten "during 19thC colonialism.."

noddyholder · 05/01/2012 13:59

Remember

mayorquimby · 05/01/2012 14:04

(*makes mental note)
If you want to avoid facing up to your racist beliefs just keep repeating the persons name. With each repitition lengthen the name and try and sound as condescending as possible.
Annnnnnnnnndrewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

ShirleyKnottage · 05/01/2012 14:05

The comments on that youtube video are fucking vile though.

Christ Alive. Sad

noddyholder · 05/01/2012 14:08

I have always remembered that and there was another along the hygiene lines that I can't locate. She is a loose cannon imo and I am always amazed she has risen in teh ranks as she has because she often just sounds stupid(at best)

I think she often puts her foot in it and she is a bit of a national liability, tbh.

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 05/01/2012 14:09

My thoughts exactly shirley

Spero · 05/01/2012 14:10

Wow. That video is shocking. She is racist and she can't answer a straight question. Sack her now.

WhingingNinja · 05/01/2012 14:10

Ah maybe that was it noddyholder. I know that I have always considered her to be racist.

ohanotherone · 05/01/2012 14:13

So black leaders and the black community should all stick together against against a divide and conquer conspiracy.... and then the comments are linked with a hashtag that refers to colonialism!

So the ruling white class are trying to divide the black community just as they did when they were slave traders Hmm.

Well DA, mine were all dirt poor starving tenant farmers or down a mine and paid in food and housing not even with real money so just which white people are you talking about then ???

No wonder the black youths feel a tad aggrieved if this is what their supposedly intelligent role models say to them in a way that is likely to incite racial hatred.

She is so thick and knows nothing about British history or nineteeth centuary politics.

WhingingNinja · 05/01/2012 14:13

I think that her rise is down to "positive discrimination" and people pleasing.

There were few female politicians and even fewer of minority background. She was pushed into the media to portray a multi cultural modern face of government.

wahwahwah · 05/01/2012 14:16

She has made negative comments about (white) peoples colour before. Colour just isn't relevant, and you can't go around making general statements based on colour. I have never been much of a fan - she comes across as having a big gob and being far too smug.

Racism cuts all ways!

Racism doens't cut all ways.

In our society there is a white majority that benefits from racism againt ethnic minorities.
