I think If you look and consider what she said in the context of the discussuion she was having. I believe she has a very valid point, she did make a generalised remark and by definition that was racist, but, it was in my opinion acceptable for her to generate discussion and break down the barriers that exist (the fear of counter accusations of racism) in discussuing the exposure openly.

Of course the BNP is a minority party - where did I suggest otherwise? Enough idiots listen to him for it to disturb me. They have 2 seats in the European parliament. They have 8 seats in councils. It is worth considering that.

Or you could just call me myopic, of course. How you like.

creighton · 11/01/2012 15:46

you are right to keep an eye on minority parties, the lib dems were a minority they are now providing a figleaf of respectability to the current government. with any luck they will pay the price at the next election.

Dianne Abbot is right, white people have in the past, and still do, play Ldivide and rule"
The reason why people have gone nuts is,let's face it, the fact that nobody likes being reminded of their faults.
Anyway, she didn't say ALL white people, and that's worth remembering - before the howls of righteous indignation get any louder.
And I'm WHITE, BTW.

" .. did you know that one of the Millibands got into cambridge with substandard grades? he got in by claiming a scholarship meant for students of inner city schools .."

Is that true?

I thought the two were entirely separate.

Grades indicate academic achievement and potential.

Scholarship is meant to help a student overcome financial inadequacy.

So someone should only be awarded a scholarship where their grades are well above the average and their income is well below?

creighton · 13/01/2012 11:03

the point of scholarships aimed at inner city students is to help students who come from non academic, unconnected and assumedly financially disadvantaged backgrounds, not for students whose parents are millionaires, academics and go to Holland Park School, for example. those students should have the educational and financial clout to make their own way. what is so hard to understand about that?

all4u · 13/01/2012 11:46

Yes she was guilty of a generalisation but Twitter is not an ideal medium and it was obviously pounced on by her enemies! However this paled into insignificance compared to the Prime Minister's shocking outburst about Tourettes! Now that was misjudged - and I bet that Samantha had a thing or two to say about that when he got home. But then the revelations about Ed Balls's schoolboy mutterings being used to goad the front bench came out - of the three that is the most unpalatable and gives me cause for concern...

Was your comment ".. what is so hard to understand about that? .." aimed at me?

TwoIfBySea · 13/01/2012 16:53

" .. did you know that one of the Millibands got into cambridge with substandard grades? he got in by claiming a scholarship meant for students of inner city schools .."

I didn't know that but I am not surprised at all. They like to slag off the Tories for being well to do while hiding their own wealth and ladder climbing abilities. It is very easy to spout Marxist views while enjoying an inflated bank balance.

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/01/2012 16:02

I always think they got her to run for leadership as a joke.

bkgirl · 15/01/2012 22:22

Of course it was racist. No excuses.

Re Diane abbott twitter

literally a few days after the Stephen Lawrence court case and this diane abbott 'non'issue obscures it in the media, what a crying shame. I bet those two convicted men would be mighty happy to be seeing the Abbott-twitter splashed across the headlines. Her comments were somewhat dramatic and yes she should have put 'some' before the words 'white people', but come on - have non of you ever said "men need to " "you know men" etc - you didnt mean all men did you ? The point she was making was a valid one, yes she was dumb to have not said 'some white people'. But the point, however clumsily put, was a fair enough point of view - unless all out there seriously think the UK no longer has any anti black sentitments. All these people getting high and mighty and shouting about racism - please tell me honestly if you arent just a tad pleased to be able to feel confident to put down that somewhat mouthy, black , female politician - if yes i reckon you should examine where you are coming from to see if theres not some racism lurking in there yourselves. Lets concentrate on real race issues.

maggiethecat · 18/01/2012 20:49

mpggp - and Diane is never loud and vulgar so can't exactly be labelled as aggressive but smug perhaps.

I'd rather have her than mealy mouthed Chuka.

BoneyBackJefferson · 18/01/2012 21:18

mpggp

two wrongs don't make a right.

"Lets concentrate on real race issues."
