Starkey was spot on in his remarks about the "patois". I am fed up with hearing "innit" and "Is"

is it cos i is black??? Can I ax a question?

Aw to hell with all youth, whatever their colour may be, I wish they had mine

forehead · 13/08/2011 00:32

Innit is not patois .

OrganicGardener, where did you get that figurefrom that 88% of population is white, i dont like random statistics thrown about like that, they can niether be proved or disproved!

organicgardener · 13/08/2011 00:40

Most people are naive as to what "Black Culture" is.

As opposed to what "White Culture" is.

Discussing the differences has got to help. Yobs of any race bring their race down? (I don't actually believe that) but in the media stereotyping is definitely used to report crime.

This picture springs to mind.

You can decide if the picture is published to be provocative or informative, either way it's out there and people will jump to the right/wrong conclusions.

2009 but still relevant.

It wasn't a "Random" statistic.

Blueberties · 13/08/2011 00:47

They aren't economic catalysts.

The causes are educational and social: the catalysts were summer, boredom, Tottenham and the police response to Tottenham.

sfxmum · 13/08/2011 00:49

you have to take into account the colour of the majority of the populations in a particular area, so Tottenham one would expect to see more black faces as opposed to day Richmond

and Starkey was talking out of his arse as usual

forehead · 13/08/2011 00:50

If their aim is to inform, then they should also show photos of the many young , black men who have been involved in the clean up campaign.

OP posts:
sfxmum · 13/08/2011 00:50

say not day

perhaps have a read of Owen Jones's (the young chap) book on Chavs

This is true forehead, but that has less impact on the readers.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 13/08/2011 01:00

Look at Salford. That's not predominately black. The kids don't 'imitate black culture'. There've been scary little shits there for decades, firmly entrenched in white criminal culture.

evenlessnarkypuffin · 13/08/2011 01:01

And Starkey has some shitty views on women too. I think he's just a prick.

lenga01 · 13/08/2011 10:13

BMW6 quote ' but the unpalatable truth is that the majority, in these instances, were Afro-Caribbean'

How do you know they were Afro-Caribbean? I hate that it always get blamed on mainly black caribbean families (usually meaning to Jamaican). I know that a large proportion (especially from the eastern London areas) were in fact from black African families. It seems that most people see a black face and assume they are black caribbean.

The reason why there may have been a larger number of black youths looting may be because there are a higher number of black families living in the areas that had trouble. It does not mean that it was only because of black youths why there was looting- they were not the only ones looting and rioting, a larger proportion yes maybe, but not exclusively.

loving the comment "i don't hate david starkey, most of my best friends are racist historians"

ThisIsANiceCage · 13/08/2011 12:14

organic gardener your figure is not relevant, whatever the year, as it's national.

Tottenham is nothing like 88% white - 20% white would be more like it.

For those who like visuals, here's Tottenham not rioting:

organicgardener · 13/08/2011 12:41

Of course it's relevant.

All information is relevant if it's the truth.

Avinalarf · 13/08/2011 12:46

Surely the most striking characteristic of the riots, at least in London, was that the worst rioting took place in poor areas.

organicgardener · 13/08/2011 12:59

Spot on Avinalarf.

But even that doesn't explain why professional people got mixed up in it.

The Govt has blamed everyone barr themselves here.

maypole1 · 13/08/2011 13:29

Avinalarf what Ealing give me a f- ing break

You will trip over and organic pear before you trip over a poor person in ealing

sfxmum · 13/08/2011 13:32

That is hardly true, like most parts of London, Ealing has pockets of poverty all around and its gentrification is fairly recent, just stroll along the massive Uxbridge Road from Shepherds Bush to Southall

maypole1 · 13/08/2011 13:38

Sfxmum THEIR WERE NO RIOTS IN SOUTHALL or ACTON DESPITE IT'S POVERTY the looting was in leafy Ealing.

forehead · 13/08/2011 13:46

In the areas where the looting took place, there are so called 'nice' parts and not so nice parts. If one goes to Brixton for example, there are deprived parts, but there are also some lovely, very large homes and the area is inhabited by middle class families (both black and white), lawyers , writers etc.
As a white woman, i did not feel threatened at all.
The same rings true for Tottenham,Clapham , Camden and Peckam.

OP posts:
rhetorician · 13/08/2011 13:52

...and then there's Woolwich, which is so off the radar that it barely got mentioned, even though there was significant trouble (Wetherspoons got torched...). Predominantly poor, used to be affluent in pockets, always a magnet for immigrants (from 18th century on) because of the army presence (pubs, whores, servants etc); army gone now, more or less, nothing to take its place.

sfxmum · 13/08/2011 14:20

the fact that there were no riots in those particular places does not surprise me, are you familiar with the geography of the place? from the Green it is barely a ten minute walk to some rough areas, Acton Town is further up with yet more estates with huge problems I expect they were out for the night and though it would be fun to go on the rampage.

please note that trying to understand what the heck happened is not excusing it, but try to understand it we must
Every time I go on a bus and come across really nasty behaviour from children I wonder what on earth is going on, public transport is often the 'interface' between socio economic groups and it is evident that there is more fear and distrust than intervention and trying to communicate.

Note all the pointless stabbings of children for 'disrespect' the pointlessness of it the cheapness of life, it has to shock us, it must. I suppose while it is contained within certain groups it is easy to ignore.

I have no answers but I need to ask questions

Tabitha8 · 13/08/2011 14:25

Not sure this is a relevant question, but why do we have in the UK areas of mainly one race? I live in a white area. Someone has already said that Tottenham is predominantly black. Why aren't we all mixed together?
