Just seen on Twitter and in a few articles like this, that there are meant to be plans for a riot in Enfield tonight and riot police are in the town centre?

Used to live there, and got family there (luckily a fair distance from the centre), but fucking hell! What the hell is going on?

Did y'all think that having the highest inequality and lowest social mobility levels in the developed world was going to be cute? That attractive, picturesque poor people were going to hold knitting protests?

UnrequitedSkink · 08/08/2011 22:08

It's not political though is it? It's opportunistic criminality for no good reason.

janelikesjam · 08/08/2011 22:08

jeez. there will be consequences from this. i am even wondering if the politicans have a strategy.

  1. let the mob rule. there will be total outcry. introduce an incredibly strong zero-tolerance policy. perhaps on purpose, a turning point?
  1. let the mob rule. wonder what has happened. pollice mistakes in Tottenham. loss of face. trundle on, not knowing the future.

what do you think?

festi · 08/08/2011 22:09

I agree to an extent umf, anyone could have predicted it, but it just seems so mindless at the moment.

ChizChizChiz · 08/08/2011 22:12

Don't be a patronising twat, umf.

These are not 'protests', for a start. How is setting a furniture shop - the kind of furniture shop that 'poor people' use, actually - on fire anything other than a mindless piece of violence and vandalism?

This is no comment on lack of social mobility. It's a bunch of ignorant thugs getting their kicks from destroying innocent, hardworking people's livelihoods. Don't dignify it with any deeper explanation.

festi · 08/08/2011 22:14

they need to get an army prescence in the capital now and set a very firm presedance for the rest of the country. I just hope cameron will realise he needs to step down.

teejwood · 08/08/2011 22:14

bialy oh no - which one ?

they have done every f'ing supermarket etc in the vicinity. where to buy a pinta tomorrow?!

EdithWeston · 08/08/2011 22:16

Young man with a grazed face interviewed by SKY summed up beautifully why this isn't political:

"They say it's about the Government, but it ain't. They ain't attacking anything to do with the Government or even the police - they're going for ordinary blokes who tried to stop them attacking a bus driver".

PainSnail · 08/08/2011 22:16

For a bit of a west london update.

There are rioters in Ealing Broadway, but on a smallish scale atm. They've looted iceland. I've heard no more about Harrow, so I'm presuming all is well.

My friend in peckham is alive and well.

"This is no comment on lack of social mobility. It's a bunch of ignorant thugs getting their kicks from destroying innocent, hardworking people's livelihoods. Don't dignify it with any deeper explanation."

Totally agree, Chiz. What a bunch of sick freaks. Sad

teejwood · 08/08/2011 22:18

umf - what chiz said ^^
these people are shitting on their own doorsteps and from what I saw of them earlier they are very well dressed with better mobiles etc than I can afford!
this is REAL for me and many others, thanks very much

janelikesjam · 08/08/2011 22:20

Painsnail. Iceland, I see a comedian at Greenwich Festival having alot of fun with that.

It will get very political and the Tories will have to deal with this seriously.

angel1976 · 08/08/2011 22:20

Sky news just interviewed the owner of the furniture store that went up in flames in Croydon and it is heartbreaking. Five generations of family business gone like that and their livelihood (plus the livelihoods of 20+ employees all) all gone up in flames in a thoughtless end of vandalism. Today is a sad day for London. :(

teejwood · 08/08/2011 22:20

pain glad your friend is OK Smile

ObviouslyOblivious · 08/08/2011 22:21

I heard that Angel, so so sad

scarlet80 · 08/08/2011 22:22

The Forces should be called in, if only to show these mindless tossers how real heroes behave! Makes me sick that men and women of a similar age are risking their lives to defend their country why these criminals just destroy it! They need to grow up and take some responsibility for their actions!!

teejwood · 08/08/2011 22:22

yy angel - heartbreaking how many people are losing their homes and livelihoods Sad

scarlet80 · 08/08/2011 22:23

Totally agree with you Angel- it's a sad day for the UK. What great world wide publicity! London 2012 should have a positive impact on our economy after this!!

SpeedyGonzalez · 08/08/2011 22:25

Ivy...things okay where you are?

festi · 08/08/2011 22:27

26 families living in flats above the furniture shop now homelss.

angel1976 · 08/08/2011 22:27

We live near Lewisham and my SIL lives near the Bull ring in Birmingham. We called to find out if she is okay and she texted to say a group of 70 masked kids just walked down their street closely followed by the police so looks like things are fairly under controlled there. Fingers crossed. I feel like a ferocious tigress tonight, if ANYONE, ANYONE AT ALL dare come near my home tonight, I will make them pay. I will literally do anything to keep my home safe for my boys. Angry I can't even begin to imagine how some of the people who have been directly affected by this whole tragedy feels. :(
