Julian Assange, wikileaks and these rape claims

I have just read the basis of the two rape claims against him.

How is it possible to issue a warrant for rape charges against him? Even going by the womens statements it isn't rape, there is no 'non-consensual' sex.

Am I missing something here or does it stink to high heaven?

jesus, is this thread about Assange or Dittany?

Women do lie, not every woman who says she has been raped is telling the truth. In this case it seems there may be some kind of political agenda. Rape is a weapon of war, for some governments this is war!

answer cotes questions dittany - stop side stepping. you badger posters on every other thread I've seen you on, why act so sensitive now?

One of the articles I read to do with this says that he has been asking for the court case to happen sooner rather than later in order to stop all the rumours.

Dittany I've read articles from August which have said

"Sweden has cancelled an arrest warrant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on accusations of rape and molestation.

The Swedish Prosecution Authority website said the chief prosecutor had come to the decision that Mr Assange was not suspected of rape but did not give any further explanation."

Except now, just when a lot of people are calling for Wikileaks to be shut down, suddenly they have changed their minds.

And it's things like this which are making us doubt the rape claims.

So you coming along and saying, "Interesting how people knee-jerk to the view that the victims must be lying when overwhelmingly it's rapists who lie." Is inaccurate and insulting. And, whether you mean it or not, suggests that in your opinion those of us who have questioned this are somehow supporters of rapists.

I'm sceptical about this, they put an arrest warrant on him just after he starts releasing embarassing matierial on most the Governments of the world.

KittyFloss · 04/12/2010 23:46

I don't know if the rape allegations are a smear campaign or not, I did read on another forum though that he had been accused (or charged?) with sexual assault in Australia a few years ago. Don't know if it's true.

Tbh he should got to trial or whatever, but wether he is a rapist or not, wikileaks is a collective, I'm lead to believe. His personal morals have no bearing on the content of the leaks one way or the other.

KittyFloss · 04/12/2010 23:47

He is a total fall guy, and I wish no harm on the man, but would totally love to find out what is in that insurance file. Bet it's juicy.

"I'm sceptical about this, they put an arrest warrant on him just after he starts releasing embarassing matierial on most the Governments of the world."

Go back and look at the timings given in earlier posts, this has been going on and gradually escalating since August. Of course he was embarrassing Governments back then too, but this predates the most recent US Diplomatic leaks.

jackstarbright · 05/12/2010 18:47

Does anyone else find this combination of computer hacking, possible government conspiracy and the strange Swedish legal system, rather like a Stieg Larrson book?

"The Man Who Kicked the US Government" perhaps?

I heard that the original chief prosecutor in Oslo dropped all the charges as there were no cases to answer. Then since the leaks, a prosecutor in Gothenburg has re-issued the warrant. Also Paypal has withdrawn the wikileak account so nobody can donate.

I agree, Mark Stephens is looking more and more like Mr Dick from David Copperfield.

Xenia · 05/12/2010 20:08

I think his best card is the system that's already set up for a lot more releases of information if the Swedes do become America's puppet in seeking his extradition there and on to the USA. Sarah Palin and amny other Americans apparently want him shot. In the UK if you say "death to XYZ" I think you can be arrested.

Perhaps we should be extraditing her from the US to the UK under the "wonderful" US/UK extradition treaty for the death threats.

Oh - if we are bringing Palin into it then I'm going for:

"The Girl With the Lipliner Tattoo [allegedly]"

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 05/12/2010 20:21

Is it right that we will only extradite him if there is an equivalent charge here in the UK to what he is being accused of in Sweden? Which might be why it's taking a while to sort out?

Also is it a European or International arrest warrent does anyone know?

Xenia · 05/12/2010 20:31

I thought they had the warrant wrong anyway? Or may be they have corrected it by now.

I suspect if he is extradited too many Govermnents would be too hurt by what is then disclosed so he might well prevent any extradition. It was a Swedish warrant issued last week and that is even though he has said he will be interviewed in the UK as would be more standard practice.

MollieO · 05/12/2010 22:37

They've corrected it. According to Mark Stephens the warrant is for 'having sex by surprise'. I would take anything MS says with a huge pinch of salt. Xmas Hmm

MollieO · 05/12/2010 22:41

Just seen the Sarah Palin reference. Is that the same Sarah Palin that thinks the USA is an ally of North Korea. Xmas Hmm Xmas Hmm

dittany Sarah Palin condemns her sex every time she opens her mouth. She is bigoted and ignorant in everything she says. Google and see what she has been doing with the Tea Party. It is absolutely dreadful.
