Julian Assange, wikileaks and these rape claims

I have just read the basis of the two rape claims against him.

How is it possible to issue a warrant for rape charges against him? Even going by the womens statements it isn't rape, there is no 'non-consensual' sex.

Am I missing something here or does it stink to high heaven?

Apparently he hasn't been charged in Sweden so he can't be extradited.

Dittany - Women also lie. You cannot ignore the possibility that he is not a rapist, especially given that the charges against him were dropped. There was an allegation that was leaked to the press, but prosecutor decided not to press charges against him:

-------
The preliminary allegation, made on Friday night, and not further investigated at that stage, was apparently leaked by police to a tabloid in Stockholm, which published dramatic claims on Saturday morning that Assange was to be arrested.

The Swedish Prosecution Authority todaysaid an "on-call" prosecutor issued an arrest warrant for Assange late on Friday, only to see it revoked the next day by a higher-ranked prosecutor who found no grounds to suspect him of rape.

"The prosecutor who took over the case had more information, and that is why she made a different assessment than the on-call prosecutor," said Karin Rosander, a spokeswoman for the authority.

One of two women involved told Aftonbladet in an interview published today that she had never intended Assange to be charged with rape. She was quoted as saying: "It is quite wrong that we were afraid of him. He is not violent and I do not feel threatened by him."

Speaking anonymously, she said each had had voluntary relations with Assange: "The responsibility for what happened to me and the other girl lies with a man who had attitude problems with women."

So, if the woman says there was no rape, are you then convinced? Or in this extremist feminist world of yours, does even a rumor of a rape must be rape? Hmm

Yes, dittany, whoever disagrees with you is "aggressive" Hmm

If you could, would you please answer: Can it be rape when the girl who was there says (1) he wasn't aggressive nor violent (2) they weren't afraid (3) they had consensual sex, and (4) they never meant for him to be charged with rape?

stnikkilarse1978 · 04/12/2010 19:09

He is supposed to be in South East England. I will keep my eye out for him Wink

I am surprised the US government didn't manage to have him secretly killed off before the leaks came out to be honest. I reckon they are in cahoots with him [mad conspiracy theorist emoticon] Grin

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 04/12/2010 19:17

I am also a conspiracy theorists and think M16 are doing a deal to protect him as long as he doesn't release anything which could damage them or identify any of their operatives.

Perhaps I have been reading too many spy novels. But stranger things have certainly happened!

BeenBeta · 04/12/2010 19:17

What is very clear here is that the only way to deal with this is a proper investigation and trial if there is sufficient evidence.

What I do not understand is why that has not been done already given that the whereabouts of two women and Assange are known to the police and have been for some months.

The matter of the leaks of US data should not be allowed to interfere or influence that process. The two issues are not connected.

But Dittany, you made the initial hostile remark about knee jerk reactions Confused

You can't say anything, can you?

Because, obviously, if the woman herself says Assange wasn't aggressive, she didn't feel threatened, the sex was consensual, and she didn't intend for him to be charged with rape... what can you say? (Except "Don't talk to me, you are aggressive" Hmm)

You can admit that your reaction in assuming rape was "knee jerk" (in quotes, because they are your words, not mine), but somehow, I don't think that will happen.

CoteDAzur · 04/12/2010 19:35

"a description of what was going on on the thread ... wasn't a personal attack on someone"

This "thread" is made up of real people. You accused people on here who doubted this allegation of rape against Assange of "knee jerk reactions".

Pipe down people you're not achieving anything by insulting each other why don't we wait and see what happens at the trial(If there is one)? BTW LOVING all the cable leaks for some reason it's amusing me no end, more to come next year(let's hope)

ilovemydogandMrObama · 04/12/2010 19:35

Objection re: comment about leftist media, but that aside, it's fairly typical when there's a high profile crime, to get their story in the media, and in rape cases, almost always includes the mention of consensual sex.

But am sure the Swedish Chief Prosecutor who has issued an arrest warrant isn't stupid and understands the aspects of rape.

CoteDAzur · 04/12/2010 19:36

Don't be patronizing, dittany. It makes that moral high ground you are striving for even less achievable.

Here is the question dittany is avoiding, for newcomers to the thread:

Can it be rape when the girl who was there says (1) Assange wasn't aggressive nor violent (2) they weren't afraid (3) they had consensual sex, and (4) she never meant for him to be charged with rape?

CoteDAzur · 04/12/2010 19:39

So why did you say it is a personal attack when I said your seeing rape here is a "knee jerk" reaction? You are not making sense, dittany.

CoteDAzur · 04/12/2010 19:41

I'm not showing any aggression, dittany. I'm asking you a simple question. Let's see if you can answer this time:

Can it be rape when the girl who was there says (1) Assange wasn't aggressive nor violent (2) they weren't afraid (3) they had consensual sex, and (4) she never meant for him to be charged with rape?

Because that is exactly what she said in August

strandedatseasonsgreetings · 04/12/2010 19:43

(Bangs heads together.)

Can you take this argument somewhere else? I want to know whether the spooks have him or not!

MistressMaker · 04/12/2010 19:43

Can't you just report what she said that offended you and then answer the question Dittany? I'd like to hear your answer.

chibi · 04/12/2010 19:44

How did it come to the attention of police then?

for instance, I had sex last night. My local police have no idea whether it was consensual or not, because they have no idea it happened ( it was consensual fwiw)

So who brought these allegations if the women involved say that he did not rape them?

just because it might be convenient for the powers that be for him to be a rapist does not mean he can't be

Anyway the cynic in me says that if sweden has a jury system he'll be aquitted most likely anyway, guilty or no
