Just seen this in another thread, but thought of starting another one with a "more to the point title" in order to attract more attention.

From the Daily Mail (I know..):
Evil teenagers who 'tortured' autistic boy, 17, for three days free to roam streets after judge fails to lock them up

Surely sentences don't get reviewed as a result of online petitions do they??? Hmm

It's outrageous but I can't see how this can possibly make any difference.

Goblinchild · 17/10/2010 19:14

Sentences can be reviewed for a number of reasons, one of which is public opinion and pressure to reassess one man's judgement of what was a reasonable sentence.
I think many of us are just standing up to be counted as objecting to the sentence being less than those handed out for vandalising property.
You are, of course, entitled to your opinion and your neutral stance.

Fortyplus - yes, petitions really can make a difference. It is really important to get as much support as possible on this issue.

Toffeefudgecake · 17/10/2010 21:05

NAS website says:

Thanks to the overwhelming public response we've had from our members and campaigners on this issue, we have been offered a meeting with the Attorney General to discuss the matter further. We are working with Mencap and lawyers to look into the legal situation and we will update you on our progress next week.

See? We can make a difference.

Please keep signing this petition.

SnowWoman · 17/10/2010 21:17

Done.

Theincrediblesulk1 · 17/10/2010 21:17

Done! how horrific that this country would allow such an injustice, no matter who they had attacked!

fortyplus · 18/10/2010 00:13

Goblinchild - I hardly think stating that an incident is 'outrageous' should be defined as a 'neutral stance'. I was merely querying whether an online petition could make a difference. Many issues are presented online as fact without sound background knowledge. I would prefer to seek expert opinion rather than behave like a sheep and waste my time.

Toffeefudgecake - thank you for the info from the NAS website. If it really is the case that this petition will make a difference then I'll be happy to sign and encourage others to do so.

I would have thought that linking to the NAS and Mencap, rather than 'The Daily Tittletattle' was a reputable enough pair of sources to persuade most people that this was a serious issue. These two national charities have a great deal of background knowledge.

Neutral?

I have signed the petition on the Mencap Site and also contacted my MP to ask him to contact the Attorney General.
