Just seen this in another thread, but thought of starting another one with a "more to the point title" in order to attract more attention.

From the Daily Mail (I know..):
Evil teenagers who 'tortured' autistic boy, 17, for three days free to roam streets after judge fails to lock them up

siblingrivalry · 16/10/2010 22:30

Just signed. I felt physically sick when I read the story and didn't make it to the end -my dd has Asperger's.

Stark - you are right I think, that the perpertrators have obviously had to have had a far from ideal upbringing, and society has to be questioned too. However each person is still responsable for their own actions. If young men like these were picked up as being a threat to other people earlier, then maybe they could be given help to stop this sort of thing happening in the first place. When something has happened though I believe it is the duty of this courts in this country to show a hard stance, teach society that this sort of behaviour is completely unacceptable and will not be tollerated.

KiwiKat · 16/10/2010 22:48

This makes my blood boil - done.

GraveyardMistsAreYellow · 16/10/2010 22:59

Signed both - thanks for the new NAS link BC. I think that was the one where you can add email addresses of friends / family so well worth doing.

EightiesChick · 16/10/2010 23:10

Signed and sent links to others.

It may do some good - Mencap (and I guess NAS as well) are going to use them as part of their complaint to the attorney general, who has the power to refer unduly lenient sentences back to the courts.

Done

Goblinchild · 17/10/2010 11:32

Even if nothing concrete happens as a consequence, I think it is important to stand up and protest about something I feel is outrageously unfair.
Otherwise the Powers That Be can say
'No one minded, no one was bothered, let it stand uncontested'

Poshpaws · 17/10/2010 11:40

Done.

Toffeefudgecake · 17/10/2010 12:08

I'm sure NAS, as well as Mencap, will use the petition to put pressure on the attorney general as well. That is why it's so important to sign the petition. It really may make a difference.

I agree - i think the fact their victim is autistic is irrelevant. It's a vile crime and they should have been locked up - but as the government is planning to dramatically decrease the number of prisoners (despite crime rates increasing) then i think we have a lot more of this to look forward to.
