Just seen this in another thread, but thought of starting another one with a "more to the point title" in order to attract more attention.

From the Daily Mail (I know..):
Evil teenagers who 'tortured' autistic boy, 17, for three days free to roam streets after judge fails to lock them up

I'd rather sign a petition for the retraining of the judge, or for whatever agency was supposed to be supporting the young torchured lad and protecting him to be slated.

These lads aren't evil, they are a product of a society that doesn't care.

Gorionine · 16/10/2010 11:35

Thanks for new link. I will wait to sign it because after what 3Thumbedwitch said I am worried that if all of us sign both, it will have less weight as it might be though "there is so little interest in this that they are left with signing two of the sae things to boost the numbers" IYSWIM.

Couls someone in the know tell us if it is better to sign both or just one of them of our choice?

BaggyCoconut · 16/10/2010 11:49

Stark - I agree with you that the judge that gave the sentence does need to be considered, and I would hope that both the judge and the system that led to this sentence be looked at. However I also think that the young men who perpertrated this attack should be punished in line with the crime they have commited. A small punishment like this gives out the wrong messge to society, violent crimes should not be punished lightly. Any human capable of doing this to another human should be removed as they are a danger to the public.

wb · 16/10/2010 11:55

Done (one, for reasons given above).

Thanks for setting up the links chandra.

3thumbedwitch · 16/10/2010 11:58

Gorionine - I don't think it makes them invalid to do both, but as you said in your next post, it might look a bit odd if they're all duplicated and actually diminish the impact rather than increase it.

stillbobbysgirl · 16/10/2010 12:00

done - thanks for posting

The issue of disability hate crime is a very serious one and is increasing so much as the day centres for people with learning difficulties are closing all over the country, leaving these vunerable adults to wander the streets unprotected.

My brother has serious physical and learning disabilities, and I am sometimes happier that he is this way rather than more able bodied, because we can protect him from the feral scum we have in this country.

I am a bit Hmm that "the agency supposed to be protecting him".. are we really now at the point where instead of questioning the parents of the perpetrators or, God forbid, the perpetrators themseleves, we want to blame the 'authorities'.

Do we now assume that anyone vulnerable is just a target and rather than be outraged that young men can film themseleves torturing another human being, we are cross at the authorities that he doesn't have a 24 hour guard.
The judge is a twat. these young men took great pleasure in what they were doing and should be punished.
Society has just given them a great big green flag that it was not so bad. After all , it wasn't like it was a real person.

Can you imagine if the victim had been the NT daughter of say a solicitor or a Consultant?
We have a grading of 'deserving' victims starting at the top with the middle to upper classes and right at the bottom are the very poor and the disabled

maddiemostmerry · 16/10/2010 12:52

Did Mencap. What kind of deterrent is that to those monsters.

I agree Pag disabled at the bottom of pile.

Signed the Mencap one. How horrible.

Sad
bloodychocoholic · 16/10/2010 13:01

thank you for posting.
Done

jodevizes · 16/10/2010 13:07

Had to do the mencap one as the other link didn't work. I think that this is an outrage, I just couldn't believe my ears when I heard this on the radio. How on earth have we let the powers that be get away with this.

edam · 16/10/2010 13:10

Signed Mencap petition.

Horrifying case and horrifying sentence. Either the judge needs to be disciplined or the sentencing guidelines need to be strengthened. Or both.

Discounts for pleading guilty and whatever else should not prevent justice being done.

Sadists like this are not going to change their ways on their own.

StarkAndWitchesWillFindYou · 16/10/2010 14:12

I'm sorry pag I admit I don't know all the details, but my faith in instrinsic human nature means that I cannot believe these young men behaved like that because they are evil, but because they themselves have been failed.

It is NO excuse for their behaviour, but I think blaming them wholey ignores the 'why were they able to do that' question, which is a bigger societal one.

pagwatch · 16/10/2010 14:19

Don't apologise. We will have to disgree.

However I think you are missing my point.
I have not said they were evil. There may be good reasons why they have turned out capeable of such horrors.

But turning the isse into blaming

"whatever agency was supposed to be supporting the young torchured lad and protecting him to be slated." is a step too far for me.

It sails too close IMO to rape victims being at fault because they were out late at night.

This young man should be able to go about his business without needing protection.
And the people responsible for his torment are the ones in the dock.
If they have issues, if they have backgrounds that mean they need support then I hope they get it.
But if his abilities enable him to go out in the world independently then that right should not be taken from him because we would rather blame those helping him than those beating him.

edam · 16/10/2010 14:30

quite right, Pag.

MaimAndKilloki · 16/10/2010 15:55

Done and bumping.

signed it.

I doubt it will do any good, but I've signed it.

I tell you, I fear for my kids, in this world, with creatures like that who can do such evil things.

Pixel · 16/10/2010 20:29

Have signed and also asked my friends and family to do the same. I agree it probably won't do any good but as long as there are enough decent people who will sign something like this, at least we know the scumbags haven't completely taken over!
