It's also heartening that whilst the OP saw this particular woman only in terms of her position as wife of a powerful man...the rest of us saw her as a woman in her own right.
A recently bereaved woman, currently living out the first weeks of motherhood in the public eye.

Rollmops · 10/10/2010 17:55

Stop backpedalling, you are doing it poorly, dear.
As mentioned many times above, it's evangelical, nay, fanatical tit-fascists like your very self that give BF a bad name.

ScaryFucker · 10/10/2010 17:55

Actually, I think SamCam should be weaning that baby by now...

Rollmops · 10/10/2010 17:56

My last post was directed to OP, of course.
[slow typing, me]

Hullygully · 10/10/2010 17:57

I hope for the baby's sake it is bm, other than that the interesting points are 1. what led to the decision to take a pic with a botlle (whatever maybe in it)? and 2. ha ha ha to the Guinness.

battyburpthebarbaric · 10/10/2010 17:58

I will say it again.

We do not know what is in the bottle.

Foxy you implied that it could not be breast milk.

Also, I will say it again, Foxy you have stated that

"'If this society was more supportive of breastfeeding she'd (every woman, not just SamCam) have support for her possible PND, medications, mental trauma, physical workload or whatever reason) it could be that may not enable her to breastfeed.'"

What if it's not Samantha's problem? There are two individuals involved in BF. The Mum and the baby. What if the individual with the problem is Florence?

Haven't read all of the thread but am so shocked by how judgemental the opener is. I think they are lovely pictures of a loving family. Why can't some women look at the bigger picture in infant feeding? It's not always black and white. Maybe bottle feeding is what comes naturally to Samantha Cameron, after all when Florence's brother and sister were babies the Camerons had a severely disabled child to care for around the clock, and I wonder if anyone would have been able to breastfeed for a long time under such circumstances.

I breastfed all three of mine, 6 months, 10 months and 3 months respectively. I started supplementing at 2 months with my third, and stopped completely at 3 months. After 4 pregnancies - 1 miscarriage (with complications) and 3 births in under 5 years, I just felt I needed my body back. Does that mean I love my third less? Of course not. Is she less healthy? No, and if she goes on to develop asthma or any other condition, will I blame myself for breastfeeding less than the other two? No I will not. The choices mothers make in feeding their babies are complex, it is really nobody's business but theirs.

Litchick · 10/10/2010 18:05

The couple have said they are mixed feeding (mostly breast).

It may very well be that in private this woman is breast feeding but when in public (which for this family means extraordinarily public) they bottle feed.
How is that hard to empathise with?

It may mean Samantha Cameron is finding it hard (not too much of a stretch to believe in her situation) and doing a bit of both.
How hard is that to empathise with?

It may mean that Samantha is doing well with her breast feeding but on that particular day her nipples were ragged..and she thought, not a chance.
How hard is that to empathise with?

Not. Hard. At. All.

Nancy66 · 10/10/2010 18:05

Starlight - what an absolute crock of hysterical, ill informed shit.

Georgimama · 10/10/2010 18:07

You're quite cross?

Tough tits. You have no idea what is in that bottle and it's none of your business anyway.

A few people around here need to get the fuck over themselves and stop seeing it as their role in life to monitor other women's perfectly legal, perfectly normal, behaviour.

violethill · 10/10/2010 18:07

In response to the OP:

Perhaps you could answer a couple of questions:

Why did you suggest that those of us who don't know what's in the bottle have no idea what ebm looks like? I expressed a lot. There was wide variation in how it looked.

Why did you say that you think dc looks cack handed? I disagree btw, but can you explain the purpose of that comment?

I also agree with others that you're back pedalling furiously, and your argument follows no coherent line anyway

BoojaB · 10/10/2010 18:09

It's a shame for the baby to be formula-fed, if that's the case. Particularly a baby in the public eye.

SixtyFootDoll · 10/10/2010 18:10

Ireally coudnt give a toss how they feed their baby

Nancy66 · 10/10/2010 18:14

Booja - no, it would be a shame if the baby wasn't fed at all. But choosing formula isn't a shame for anyone.

piscesmoon · 10/10/2010 18:15

I think that some parents must feel very insecure about their own parenting, if they are so judgemental. Why on earth should it matter to anyone else? I haven't looked at the link-I couldn't care less! Perhaps people just want to feel superior.

2shoes · 10/10/2010 18:15

a shame!!!
good grief threads like these do mothers no favors.

usualsuspect · 10/10/2010 18:16

Booja ..its as shame you wrote that post

piscesmoon · 10/10/2010 18:17

' Particularly a baby in the public eye.'

Is a baby in the public eye more shamed?!

phipps · 10/10/2010 18:18

booja Hmm why is it a shame full stop never mind because the baby is kind of in the public eye?Hmm

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 10/10/2010 18:19

Maybe Sam had a few too many sauv blancs last night and decided bottle was best today. Who really gives a flying fuck.

violethill · 10/10/2010 18:19

To the OP:
How do you know the upshot of this photo won't promote greater levels of bf among socio economic groups who traditionally have low bf rates? Maybe they won't be keen to follow the Tory example?!

(ok, my post is playing devils advocate, but your arrogance in assuming you know exactly the purpose and outcomes of this photo is frankly astonishing . I bet you were the girl at school who always HAD to be right!)

Litchick · 10/10/2010 18:23

I bet if Samantha is papped breast feeding next week, OP will say, oh well, it's okay fir her. She's rich.

violethill · 10/10/2010 18:26

Or she'll tell us it's a staged shot and we can't see the milk actually being drunk!!!
