Silverfish - does everyone have them?!

it seems everyone has an issue with these horrors at the moment. How do I get rid of them!

Very common, they come out at night more often, try putting down some ant powder if safe to do so

I’ve only ever had them in a badly ventilated shower room many years ago. Ghastly things which grow quite big and fat if not removed immediately. Aren’t they something to do with damp? I’ve no damp in current house amd haven’t had any

They are very common. I can’t really as I have young kids who would love to do role play and use it as snow or something! 😅
I did see someone post on here say she put wet newspaper on the floor attached to skirtings and in the morning peeled the paper and squished them all and it took her 6 months to get rid of the infestation, but I can’t see how you’d catch them before the run off. They’re dreadful

I’m in a temporary accommodation, one bed flat! I told the landlady about the issue. For some bizarre reason she doesn’t believe me! I have photographic evidence but… I suppose it is her furniture that will end up damaged. I explained I didn’t want her stuff ruined and so she really needs to sort it but she doesn’t want to know.

We were brought up to believe they were lucky!

Cedar oil repels them.

Pardon me, while I absolutely respect your beliefs I do not feel too much luck when I’m dodging them and crushing them with my slipper each morning haha, i will try the cedar oil for sure! They creep me out hugely

I see the odd one. They don't' bother me. They don't spread disease, and they eat dust and provide food for other useful creatures. We cohabit effectively.

I wish I wasn’t phased by them. I’m not good with any insect to be honest. I can’t help but be scared to put my bare foot on the floor. I’m constantly wearing slippers around my house and I dread picking toys or clothes that have been left on the floor, up as there is guaranteed one under there.

We have them. I usually see one in the evening near the kitchen sink when I flick the light on.

I don't mind insects but the way they move gives me the creeps! Horrible things

I haven't seen one for around 40 years. Our childhood home occasionally got them when the bathroom was damp. Never seen them since.

We had an infestation in my childhood home. I loved them and viewed them as my pets. My poor mum. 🤣

You need to do a top to bottom deep clean - everything, absolutely every single thing in your home, including having your carpets and rugs cleaned, and then make any changes needed to reduce moisture in the house from then on.

It's a total ballache but it will get rid of them.

I think they are attracted to damp. We had them in an old 1850 period converted flat. Beautiful property, but damp. It was horrible sitting on the floor opening Christmas presents with silverfish slithering about. Have never had them in other, newer properties.

Silverfish? tut, tut. I have GOLDFISH.

We've never had them until this year, they've absolutely exploded in the heat. Thatched cottage.

I couldn't care less. They eat paper and don't bite or bother. I leave them to it.

Exactly that! I heard that they get into food in the cupboards too. It’s really messing with my head. The thought of them really creeps me out

A lot of people said that on a PP I read! They must have been rife back in the day. I had never seen them before around 4 years back in an old house I rented and then now here.

They make my skin crawl We had a terrible infestation after an extension was built. They got into books, behind picture frames. I sprinkled diatomaceous earth powder all around my skirting boards every evening and hoovered it up every morning. It was a pita but they went eventually.

I have them in my current house and had them where I lived when was a child but not in any of the middle properties.

I just let them get on with it.

Exactly! My kids are all over the floor and they’re unaware so I don’t want to creep them out I just say, can you please not be lying al over the floor just in case there is spiders down there. Or if it is first thing I say oh there are spiders on the floor, come onto the sofa please.
I don’t want to creep them out but….also don’t want them on them!

Really! I wish they didn’t bother me.
I have noticed them massively since the heat too which is weird as they love damp

We used to have a lot in the (well ventilated), bathroom but not long after Sid the spider appeared one day ( I'm ok with spiders so not a problem), the little bastards vanished. It could be coincidence but....

We are in a new build with no carpets and have them! No Damp issues that I’m aware of. Hate the fuckers. Found some in a box with some wooden kids toys on their toy shelf! No material and WTAF!!

We used to get the odd one in our bathrooms but we sprayed with Nope silverfish spray and haven’t seen any since .

You know it’s funny you say this! My flat has lots of spiders. I don’t mind them as much as the SF and so I leave them too it. I know there are lots in the bedroom and I leave them as I know they’ll eat the SF! It’s that they’re in my kids ottomans with their toys in that creeps me out I have got up one morning and seen them ll running over the toys!
