it seems everyone has an issue with these horrors at the moment. How do I get rid of them!

We are in a new build with no carpets and have them! No Damp issues that I’m aware of. Hate the fuckers. Found some in a box with some wooden kids toys on their toy shelf! No material and WTAF!!

Urgh really!
They are mean to be common but they’re actually really disgusting I feel uneasy being at home because of them. I am obsessed with checking the floor it’s getting a lot

FYI I just went to purchase “nope silverfish spray” on Amazon. It says 700+ have been sold the past month! They must be on the rise 🤢

They were common when I was young in a rural area. Never saw them in my house in the city.

Am currently living in an apartment in a European city and they are not uncommon here…I put out traps frequently enough. (And I have problems with moths, mice, and African carpet beetle larvae here too…I am looking forward to going home permanently in 11 months!).

Urgh I have dealt with the good old carpet beetles too!
they were rife a year or so ago.
mice? I truly feel for you.
best of luck! It is awful isn’t it. I never noticed any of these issues growing up!

I wish I wasn’t phased by them. I’m not good with any insect to be honest. I can’t help but be scared to put my bare foot on the floor. I’m constantly wearing slippers around my house and I dread picking toys or clothes that have been left on the floor, up as there is guaranteed one under there.

They don't do any harm though? I've never stood on one. They're pretty nimble little things.

I know. I’m just not an insect lover they really creep me out about any insect 😂
I have never stood on one either (knowingly anyway) I just wouldn’t like to risk it

I see the odd one. They don't' bother me. They don't spread disease, and they eat dust and provide food for other useful creatures. We cohabit effectively.

Agree. I love them actually, so pretty.

Flannelfeet · 30/08/2026 18:35

What is a silverfish? Ive never heard of them.
Ive got visions of waking up in the morning to wee fish on the kitchen floor. Id just of thought that bloody pest of a man has been up and eating sardines in the night 🤷🏼‍♀️🤭.

They are fascinating, and as they’ve been around over 400 million years I don’t think you’re going to get rid of them that easily. So long as they’re not damaging treasured books etc I’d leave them be. They don’t even have mucky sex

“There is no physical contact between mating silverfish. Instead, there can be a lengthy courtship ‘dance’ or ‘chase’ which can last up to an hour and a half. After which the male spins a small silken thread and places a drop of sperm on to it. The female will collect this sperm and use it to fertilise her egg”

They’re rotten. Pest control also told me they shed their skin like snakes and eat one another.
Disgusting and I’d love them gone. Although, like you say my chances are slim to none as they’ll be experts in how to avoid humans and pets. I wonder if a cat will help

Oh fuck me 😫 I hate the sound of them even more 🤢. The things of nightmares 😔. Hope they dont make a film involving them taking over someone's house. Shedding skins and eating the weans 😱.

No I really do like them. So shimmery. Totally harmless and benign little kitchen friends. I first saw them aged about twelve when we moved house, and I’ve loved them ever since.

Thing is, they’re common pests! I’m in temporary accommodation at the moment which is a one bed flat. I’m due to move into a new property next month (if it proceeds in time) but they can easily either be there already OR be hidden in my things which will be getting a big shake and cleaning before getting transported!
