Whatever your speed or method, whether it’s a few shelves, a couple of boxes or entire attics, rooms, or garages, come here and share both your successes and your struggles. There’s support and commiserations, and lots of good ideas.

Recycling trolley - three empty plastic containers from garage.

I think I’ve looked at almost every scrap of paper from school/nursery. Some more in paper bin today, and everything else is where it belongs.

Kids have been great, very co-operative.

I have tidied the living room and have some bits I want to sort/get rid of but don't have the energy tonight. It's so hard to fit it in around work days isn't it?

CheesePlantFeet · 12/01/2026 21:19

I did a 5 minute cull in my bedroom this morning and the fridge and the spice cupboard tonight - They were a bit grim 🫣

Bin / recycling: 6x ratty old underwear, eye cream that goes lumpy on my face, 15x OOD food, dead plant, 2x storage jars

Total: 188

This is my downfall. I feel like the only time I get to sort the house is after 9pm and I’m just dead!

Realfastfoodie · 12/01/2026 21:40

I did manage to get 26 items to the charity shop today and 3 in the bin, so that’s progress.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/01/2026 22:46

Chucked out a dozen bottle of potions and lotions (mostly nail polish. I NEVER wear nail polish!) this evening. 26 so far. Also last year's calendar, 27.

Pigtailsandall · 13/01/2026 16:32

I have replaced a few items - new photo frame to replace a cracked one, a baking tray to replace a really scratched one - and DH also wanted a pizza pan. I also got 3 small lego sets in the sale which I know is bad, but also something to keep for a rainy day for DC to do. So few ins.

But today I cleared and cleaned our craft drawers of old playdoh, coloring books, small broken toys, sme used notebooks and folder etc - 24 items gone! I also have more which I need to recycle properly so not counting those yet. And I didn't count paper or pens and there were lots of those!!

So in a few items - year total= 19 (still quite a bit!)
Out= 50

I've totally fallen off the decluttering wagon, but haven't given up.

12/01

  • 6 DVDs
  • 2 small bags of expired food
  • Broken solar garden lights
  • Random crap left over from neighbour's renovations
  • Old Christmas baubles that we used outside a few years ago & forgot to bring in
  • A roll of 15 yo leftover carpet
  • A couple of random broken breezeblocks
  • The box from my new mattress
  • 2 MiniFool's outgrown cosy winter onesies
  • a favourite bowl that got chipped

13/01
4 Ins today from a delayed package, but one is to pass straight to family so I'm only counting 3

  • 2 small bags of expired food

Outs 41 + 19 = 60
Ins 35 + 3 = 38
Net 60 - 38 = 22

Hi everyone,

Congrats on your totals! Thank you to the poster that mentioned how to find your previous post to make counting easier! There was a poster not sure about selling shoes on Vinted... I just wanted to say that I take a lot of old shoes to schuh and get a £5 off voucher for each pair.

I'm finally up and running for 2026! I took two bags of clothes to the charity shop, getting rid of: 2 girls coats, a dress, girls dressing gown, girls puffer jacket, 2 pairs of mens gloves, work dress and cardigan. (11 items).

Vinted sales - girls dress, Kate Spade purse, mens jeans. (3 items).

Out 2026 - 14 items

I have another 3 bags of stuff ready for the charity shop. I've sold a kids jumper on Vinted, but haven't sent it yet. And I'm binning one of my coats. I'll add these on my next update when they are out of the house.

Realfastfoodie · 13/01/2026 19:54

1 helmet in the bin as I couldn’t find anyone who wanted it.

Nothjng else technically out of the door but I’m working on my charity pile again!

NorthernDancer · 13/01/2026 19:59

I came on to see if there was a "one item a day" thread and found this one instead.

I started on New Year's Day clearing and tidying a small area at a time and getting rid of at least one item.

Yesterday I donated three books to the Library for their book sale.

Today I have taken a bag of old towels to the RSPCA.

Tomorrow I will be dropping into the charity shop with a selection of Russian dolls, a healthy back bag and an insulated mug.

I've also turned out the letter rack and filed or binned most of the contents.

IndianSummer78 · 14/01/2026 03:17

One sweatshirt that's just a bit too small and awkward to get on. Total is 4239

TidyClutterIsStillClutter · 14/01/2026 07:20

One kid presented me with a huge pile of her old artwork and gave it to me to look at then bin. I kept several items for myself that brought back significant memories but mean nothing to her.

I sorted and tidied lego yesterday. Some gets displayed, younger sets are played with. There’s also playmobil and duplo that I want to sell but kids are very reluctant about this.

Two more containers into plastics recycling

@NorthernDancer I joined a one item a day thread ages ago and still go by that, anything above is a bonus.
Yesterday was stamps to a cat charity for fundraising (not sure how much they make back)
Today will be Boots recycling.
I have a few life admin things to do but would also like to get some other things sorted too.

Does it matter how old, useable they are?

How useable the shoes are? Sorry.

NorthernDancer · 14/01/2026 18:54

So, I didn't manage to liberate the insulated mug after all. DH has reclaimed it and added it to his collection.

Tonight I have binned an OOD Korean style stir fry sauce and eaten a lone noodle nest. Packaging for that, and the peppers for the stir fry, has gone in the recycling.

Now scanning for tomorrow's item.

IndianSummer78 · 14/01/2026 19:53

Two leaflets recycled and one DVD binned. Total is 4242

NorthernDancer · 14/01/2026 21:21

Bundle of 1950s sewing/knitting magazines, and some individual patterns, gone to someone on our local WhatsApp group.

Also looking at cashing in three items of inherited jewellery to buy one piece that I would actually wear.

In the background, bins are emptied and recycling goes out every night. Tis the law in this house.

IncessantNameChanger · 15/01/2026 00:54

I am snowed under in life admin this week that was putting off over Christmas. It's all got urgent and come back to bite me on the bum! I dud get the counted bits to their donation point at school so small wins. Hopefully my life admin will be finished tomorrow as there is paper work all over the floor while I'm chugging through it.

I have so much I need to do still. When does it ever end?

When i fiish im doing the last three shelves then a box of toys blocking the back door. Then im going to start on my room which i have never tackled properly. Its the worse room. Terrible really. I have four draws full of undies alone all over flowing. I might just do one area a day in there next week. I also need to find my passport. No idea where that is.

Broken hairband
Ds socks
My socks ripped when put on

Total out 181
Total in = 14

TidyClutterIsStillClutter · 15/01/2026 04:54

Yesterday - one small plastic toy in donation pile. This is going to be a very long slog….

Gathered up all my mum’s sewing tins together on the cleared shelves in the living-room for future sorting.

Found a bag of men’s socks, some of which fit the teenager nicely. So that’s some money saved and another space gained.

Two plastic containers from garage to recycling trolley.

Had a quiet few days & need to get back on the declutterring train! The charity shop bags are still in the car.

IncessantNameChanger · 15/01/2026 08:37

It's very hard to decluter when there are essential things to do as well. I have got a few jobs I can not put off and all elements of housework have gone in the bin right now

mutleyschuckles · 15/01/2026 09:33

I’ve cleared the Xmas decs out of the child’s room & bagged away for next year. Also went in with a bin bag & filled that with bits of rubbish (he has a perfectly good bin in there which is stuffed to the brim as he cba to empty it) bits of happy meal toys & other odds & ends he insists on keeping but won’t notice is gone. Donating a few of his old poncho towels as well & found some walkie talkies to pop on vinted.

Realfastfoodie · 15/01/2026 11:58

I’m not managing a whole lot of actually getting rid of stuff, but there’s definitely some good tidying up well underway!
