Does a reed diffuser that scents a room actually exist?

I've bought so many that frankly are a complete waste of time.. from most of the high street shops, and more expensive. None smell unless close up and even then not for long.

Does anyone know a brand that actually manages to make a room smell nice?

I would be interested to know this too!

Yes - I use an M&S Jasmine fragranced one. I think it’s about £8. Lasts for ages and makes the room smell really lovely.

I use the mehr diffuser from Rituals and it makes my whole open plan front room, stairs and landing smell.
Nothing else has compared.

Ykes - the prices, though! I guess you get what you pay for.

A friend bought me a reed diffuser from The Handmade Soap Company last November. It was incredible - you could smell it as soon as you entered the house, yet it wasn't overpowering. Lasted until June this year and I can actually still smell it a bit even though it's just an empty bottle (I keep meaning to buy a refill). Not exorbitantly expensive and because it lasted so long I suspect it actually works out less than cheap brands.

DrCoconut · 15/08/2023 11:25

Weirdly I got one from poundstretcher. I smell it as soon as I go in the room and it is nice too.

Hoppinggreen · 15/08/2023 11:26

valentte - online only but not too expensive and really lovely.
Great gifts too as they look like they cost much more than they do

BerriesandLeaves · 15/08/2023 11:29

I agree with Valentte

I buy diffusers from a small business called Rebecca Tracey as they use oils that don’t evaporate. It means they last for longer and have a more natural aroma. I don’t understand why most commercial /big names don’t use the same oils as they are so much more effective

TheChosenTwo · 15/08/2023 11:35

Rituals ones are really lovely, both my girls get one in their stockings at Christmas and they last a good 6 months, think they use fewer sticks as they don’t have massive rooms. I don’t use them elsewhere in the house as I’m not a fan of having a lot of fragrance in the house although will light a candle from time to time.

It might not be the reed diffuser that is the issue. Is your room very large? Do you leave the internal door open a lot of the time or have the window open? Do you have high ceilings? The strength of the scent is down to the concentration in the air. The larger the room, the weaker the scent. If you have the door open, you will be trying to perfume multiple rooms. If the window is open, the scent won't build up concentration. Try putting the diffuser in a bathroom or another small room with the doors and windows closed to test if the issue is the diffuser isn't strong smelling.

If you are trying to perfume a large space with the doors and windows regularly open, an ultrasonic diffuser will be more effective.

How many reeds are you using? The more you use, the stronger the scent (and the faster it will run out...). Are they "clogged" or sticky? Do you turn the reeds occasionally?

Absolutely. It's a business local to me. She hand pours all the candles & blends the fragrances. They really are amazing quality the fragrance from the melts, candles and reeds last for ages

morelippy · 15/08/2023 13:19

@Diospyros we don't have a large room but yes the window is open and internal doors open, which is a very good point.
I do turn the sticks but it makes no difference.

Maybe I should abandon reed diffusers

That explains it! You are scenting the garden 😂

Reed diffusers won't work if you have the window or internal doors open. An ultrasonic diffuser will be more effective but not as effective as it would be with the window shut. Site it away from the window so you at least get the benefit as it drifts outside!

PuppyMcPupFace · 15/08/2023 14:25

St Eval. I also like White Co ones.

Rina66 · 15/08/2023 14:45

I got so fed up with even my Jo Malone ones not smelling that I now make my own. You can buy everything from a uk company, the bottles, the carrying oil, the reeds and any scent you like. I place the bottle on the scales, add in 60ml of carrier then 30ml of fragrance, give it a little shake, add the reeds and it's done, they really waft! At the moment I'm using Dove flavoured ones in the bathrooms and Myrhh & Tonka in the downstairs loo, I'm always being asked where they're from especially as the bottles have no branding!

The Neom ones are amazing. Especially "Scent to make you happy". I have it in my home workspace and it makes logging on much nicer :)

omgsally · 16/08/2023 08:15

I rarely find a reed diffuser that has any cast but I've just bought one which i can smell as soon as I walk in. It's ylang ylang and orange blossom from Tesco of all places.

Mbop · 16/08/2023 08:27

Yes, try The Kandlers Table, they're a small Yorkshire based company.

I've their mint one in the downstairs WC and their black pepper in my hallway. They're the best I've come across.
