I won't give 'record' type things to my children, if I keep them it's because I want them why would I keep their red books for example then dump them on them? toys are different, if I've kept a sentimental toy they are welcome have them at their houses. then dh's mum dumped his weight records etc school misc and lovely photos etc on us which he then stuffed into the most unsuitable non-space so I emailed her and said don't give him any more nice memories because he won't look after them. my mum gave me photo/scrapbook Id done of a trip and it just made me feel weird so I don't want to do that 🤷🏽‍♀️ that's just my thoughts

WildPoinsettia · 09/02/2022 17:49

Welcome Quantum. I enjoy decluttering alone too. I want to be able to get rid of stuff I know won't be missed. Not have someone reminded of it and claim to need it, only for it to go back into the drawer or cupboard and continue to never be used Hmm

SeparatedMum agree with the hoarding of DC stuff. If they wanted it they'd take it when they moved out. Luckily I never had this issue with my parents because they didn't keep anything like school report etc. Anything I wanted to keep went into my room and when I moved out I decluttered my own junk myself so left nothing behind. I find it weird to save things for someone else who so obviously isn't bothered about it in the first place.

Today's out: some really awful elastic bands that don't stretch properly, belonging to a small pony toy doll. They've never been used and their existence is pointless.

FurBabyMum02 · 09/02/2022 21:06

@wildpoinsettia totally agree with your thoughts on decluttering alone, it's so much easier to get rid of stuff! I'm making little piles as I go of stuff to check with DH that we've agreed he goes through each weekend (so it doesn't sit there forever more (I'm on maternity leave, he's working full time) but I think 80% of it stays. I'm still sore about his 'spare' shoes that he's never touched because of 1 pair falling apart 10 years ago that has never happened since 🙄 its a little unfair of me really as he literally has 4 pairs of shoes including those (2 trainers, 2 works shoes, 1 wearing, 1 'spare' of each)

FurBabyMum02 · 09/02/2022 21:08

Meant to tag @quantumweatherbutterfly aswell

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 09/02/2022 22:00

@FurBabyMum02 there are two boxes of stuff in our garage that I cannot sort alone. They have been there literally months. I grind my teeth a bit every time I have to look at them!

londonmummy1966 · 09/02/2022 22:35

My DDs are the opposite wanting to keep absolutely everything for their children in due course.... DOesn't happen as I often want to sell or donate it.

Limited opportunities for disposing of things whilst waiting for my test results but I dropped 4 books off at a community "little library" on my way back from the PCR test centre. A neighbour came and took away a load of bubble wrap and one ebay parcel was collected by the Post Office. I spent part of the afternoon listing things on Vinted and three have sold so that is another batch to go tomorrow.

EllieQ · 10/02/2022 07:20

Another five minutes of tidying with DD last night - more little toys put away, and she agreed to get rid of the plastic eggs from for kinder eggs and just keep one.

I’ve also had some interest in a couple of things on FB marketplace, but one person has stopped replying to messages and the other has said they’ll be in touch about collection, so I don’t have much hope that they’ll be collected. Very frustrating!

8stone13 · 10/02/2022 08:44

Another item sold for £80 which I'm really pleased about.

The main thing I need to declutter right now is 5 knackered internal doors that are propped up in my porch, strangely enough no-one on FB Marketplace/Gumtree etc wants them, can't think why 🤔🤨😀

8stone13 · 10/02/2022 22:52

2 doors are leaving tomorrow 👍🏻

Pineappleapple · 11/02/2022 02:08

Good news about the doors! 3 more to go!

ememem84 · 11/02/2022 07:14

The day is here. The big declutter. Will report back later.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 11/02/2022 09:51

Please to hear about the doors! It's wonderful to get rid of the big stuff, isn't it?

I had a smaller but particularly pleasing win yesterday - I finally got rid of the last lot of DD's night time pull ups (she was late being dry at night), they've been hanging around for over a year. Typically if happened just after I'd bought a big box, so there were lots of unopened packets to go. And now they're with a local food bank, which makes me happy.

Next up: another load of DD's old clothes to charity today, plus a small box of bits that I found lying around yesterday.

After that: Some bits from the loft to sell (an Oscha print ring sling and a JoJo padded waterproof suit in immaculate condition because DD wouldn't wear it), and I'm finally going to make DH help me tackle the two boxes in the garage.

8stone13 · 11/02/2022 13:56

Thanks @Pineappleapple & @QuantumWeatherButterfly

All the doors are now gone & I have my porch back!

ememem84 · 11/02/2022 14:20

Dump tripe 1 and 2 done. And charity shop trip. All full car loads.

FurBabyMum02 · 11/02/2022 19:00

Well done @ememem84 I'm hoping I will have a similar day tomorrow.
Almost finished going through the spare room dummping ground and have filled a whole box for charity just from 1 room (huge box my 84 litre loft storage boxes came in so quite a feet) took me 5 rooms to fill the last 1.

Also used said loft storage box for all the wedding memorabilia and my wedding dress that were taking up valuable cuboard space

Will hopefully get the room back tomorrow once the charity box is gone, the wedding box and moses basket are in the loft and the conked out tumble dryer has been tipped.

londonmummy1966 · 11/02/2022 19:19

Well done@ememem84 and littlequantum....

I managed to get rid of a crate of books - I left it outside with a sign telling people to help themselves and half of them went. The rest I've delivered to various community little libraries around the area and to the bookshelf in one of the local tube stations. I discovered one book was on costume history that a friend of mine loves so I've put it aside to give to her when I see her next week.

A couple of ebay sales were collected this morning and I have one more to go tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be able to get a bigger box of books together tomorrow for DH to drop off at a charity "books and music" shop.

ememem84 · 11/02/2022 20:35

Also packed up:

A suitcase and two small backpacks for me (for 6 weeks.)
Laundry bag suitcase and trunki for the dc
A bag for life with “sports” - swimming towels armbands my riding gear for me and the dc
Toiletries/bathroom

Tomorrow we take all of the above plus dhs stuff plus kitchen things (that we need for our staycation - coffee machine. Special cups and whatever food we have here!) to the temporary place.

On Sunday we leave kids with my parents and DH and I love furniture we’re keeping upstairs. And the. We put the rest in the car and dump it. And smash all the old plates and glasses. #therapeutic.

Then in 6 weeks we do the reverse.

I’ve also filled a bag for life with clothes that don’t fit. Abs am returning two new pairs of trousers I bought which I just wasn’t keen on upon trying on.

londonmummy1966 · 12/02/2022 18:35

Wow @ememem84 - talk about slimmed down living for a few weeks!

Today I went through the final bags I've been avoiding and binned a lot of scruffy bits of paper, dried up deodorant etc. A large box of pencils is now in the girl's room and a lot of change in the loose coin jar. One bag is packed with stuff for the charity shop as I only need one backpack for the gym and my overnight bag is empty in the bottom of the wardrobe for next time I need it.

I've also filled 2 large cardboard boxes with books to go to the books & music shop and hoping DH will drop them off tomorrow.

Only things out today were one ebay package and 4 more books to a little library. I was pleased to see that all the ones I left yesterday had gone although someone else has dropped a few off too so it is quite full now. Will have to try another one next time. A local mum is coming by later for some craft stuff and I've filled a bag with felt for one of my fellow vaccine volunteers who is a Brown Owl to take. So feel I've made a bit of progress today.

seperatedmum · 12/02/2022 19:07

so the children won't be away for even one night of half term thanks STBXH and I've decided to get the house valued after half term which I've taken off so that's 9 days including today. we've been out and about today so I'm just going to swap the shower wire hangers so that's a neutral today which is better than nothing. also planning to do some paperwork when younger 2 in bed

Pineappleapple · 12/02/2022 20:03

A few recent outs, I have 4 pairs of glasses I don't need, even if I keep a couple of spares, going to see if boots take them. Also some lightbulbs that don't fit any of our lights. I was wondering how to fit them in a drawer then looked at them properly and realised no need!

I've also downsized our sewing box! I'd previously had a really nice one but far too big for buttom sewing that I do, so sorted it, got rid of lots and rehomed it into a shoe box. Took another pass at it and removed some more, including a little project I started but will never finish, and some replacement shoelaces. It now fits comfortably in a smaller box and in one of the drawers where I cleared out some bits recently. Feels like a really long process but a big item gone and the bits I need fit out of sight. Amazing.

A t-shirt of mine is in the charity bag and some of my toddler's trousers. Tiny steps recently but trying to keep plodding on.

ememem84 · 12/02/2022 20:57

@londonmummy1966 it’s insane. We’ve taken 3 car loads here. One food and other fripperies. One our stuff. One the kids and dds cot. But we’re here. And settled in Ish.

Tomorrow DH and I are dropping kids at dparents and then we’re heading home to dump the rest of the kitchen stuff we’re not keeping.

It’s been a stressful day. So we’ve decluttered a bottle of red wine. A very very nice central otago Pinot noir (burn cottage 2018). Dm bought it for us for our weddding anniversary last year.

londonmummy1966 · 12/02/2022 23:51

Glad to hear about the decluttering of red wine - I usually manage to declutter a bottle over the weekend!!

Gingernaut · 13/02/2022 01:09

All the make-up, brushes and eyelash curlers - gone

7 bin bags of clothes that don't fit - gone

A bin bag of plastic ware, kitchen ware and other bits of bric-a-brac - gone

CDs culled

Shoes that don't fit - gone

TruffleNoir · 13/02/2022 10:31

Hi everyone, hope you are all well?

Its been ages since I've posted. Been struggling mentally and absolutely shattered in the evenings when kids in bed.

I have been doing well with getting rid of things though! Keeping up with at least item a day like recycling old packages and boxes I'd kept "just in case" it would come handy for storing something etc 😂 I've also made £20 out of Facebook sales so far which isn't too bad going considering they'd been listed for ages 😂

This might be better suited for the organising thread but I bought a really nice storage cube out of Aldi but have no idea what to put in it 🤣🙈 I think I'm best making notes of stuff I'm keeping that need homes then finding or buying storage boxes. I was in B&M the other day and was loving all their storage stuff but didn't want to buy when I didn't have a plan. That's good going for a hoarder though, yeah? 😂

FurBabyMum02 · 13/02/2022 20:52

@truffleNoir hope things improve for you soon, can totally relate to the exhaustion after kids are asleep bit! It's only been the last week of so I've been staying up after my 8 month old is down as I've needed the sleep so badly but realised that actually an hour alone/DH time in the evening is just as valuable.

I have finally finished going through the spare room this weekend which was the worst one on my list. Half a bag of rubbish from the tool collection gone and now everything actually fits in the cuboard neatly and only the suitcases are under the bed where before both were overflowing. All ready for decorating now when I can muster the energy, may see how much it is to just pay someone as I really can't imagine where we will find the time to fit it around DS.
