This New Year, The Fledglings are Flying a new approach

Hello and welcome to new and old.

If you are new around here. Hi, introduce yourself around the fire pit in the naughty corner where we are all sitting comfortably. The naughty corner is decked out with comfy, and snacks, and a place just to have a chat when things haven't gone to plan. We are a very long running thread but do love new blood stopping by to join us.

Welcome to those who are returning.

We had a chat on the previous thread about possibly trying a new twist on the fly lady system. We all know that the fly lady system is good for establishing routines when we follow it. But we also know that sometimes we need a quick hit of a big declutter. And that life has a habit of throwing curve balls making it very difficult to stay on track.

So this is the plan. Each evening I will post the babystep, a thought point and the flylady daily focuses. We are not giving up on the fly lady system but just bringing it into line with the individuality of our lives, and trying to resolve some of the issues that comes from being the family brain, trying to do all the things and generally having modern busy lives. The thought point is to try to get you to think differently. And may require a click on a link (video), a discussion on the thread, or just you considering things. I do not promise it will make you feel better, or magically change your house straight away. But hopefully it will help with the overall flow and approach. And may just tweak the twee out of the fly lady system to the point where it is now your system.

But before you entirely regret your choices in letting my try this craziness we are going to start with some key basics that I really do think has been incorporated well into the Flylady system.

  1. the mess, disorder and chaos did not happen over night. Give yourself the grace and time to fix it. (also known as roman weren't built in a day so don't kill yourself trying to get your house immaculate in a day)
  1. Goals vs system.
We will go into this a little more shortly but to start, the fly lady system has an end goal - a house which is tidy and clean that comes second nature. It achieves it by building habits and routines that make the steps needed to achieve that goal second nature. There is a lot of research that says goals don't work, systems do. And systems are built on the formation of habits.
  1. You are never behind.
You might not be making the progress you would like, you may have taken a break. But you are not behind. So again, give yourself a break and drop the guilt. There is probably a reason why you have taken a break - illness, other demands on time, mental health etc etc. And yes some days it is an effort to make sure that everyone is fed and ok. But that is ok, so give yourself grace that on that day that was exactly what was needed and thus you succeeded in the essential goal of the day. guilt is just going to make things harder than it needs to be. It is ok not to feel guilty if you did not do all the things.

I will be back later with links for tomo. I am posting them in the evening the night before because some of us are morning people, and some of us are night people. And this way everyone will be able to see prior to when they need to consider it.

Come park your broom in the new thread for a little while and have a natter whilst we wait to bring in the New year.

Sounds like a plan MrsTidy i think the do less on the good days and more on the bad might be aiming to reduce the "boom-bust" cycle that a lot of us can fall into. Where we try to do all the things and then are able to do none of the things. I know this is partly where the flylady system is coming from in terms of the little and often in the decluttering etc.

My problem is not wanting to do stuff when H is there.

Spoiler - he's always there.

So I've come to the conclusion that however much I may dislike it, I have to get going first thing in the morning. Both while he's in bed and while he's on the treadmill and weights.

I have kind of done the missions this week. Not on the suggested days. On Wednesday I
looked at the pile of paperwork on the table, recycled some and decided (after a text exchange with S2) the rest can all go away;
put the karate curriculum papers in a new folder, recycled the dead one and put them away in the drawer;
recycled a bit of 2019 Christmas cardboard that H used to put seedling pots on during 2020;
put the Eden Camp bumbag in the charity box (after text exchange with S1);
put the newest Which and Beer in the drawer and recycled the old ones, along with 2021 seed catalogues;
(did the crosswords from Which, and entered the latest);
sorted out the pile of music I took out of the choir bag last term, recycling some bits of paper and putting the 2019 funeral OOS in the Away pile;
moved a few things round the "book"shelves in the hall and put all the old glasses on the table next to the charity bag;
noted that not a single pair of the old glasses is the right shape to take the lenses from my broken most recent old pair;
put the new Christmas CDs on the CDs shelf (yes, I realise this is the complete opposite of one of the missions Grin);
hoovered the lounge including the settees

Now for today's I am eyeing up the plant arrangement the Girlfriend's parents gave us for Christmas. It's sitting a bit neglected at the moment Blush

H cleaned the car yesterday and we don't tend to leave stuff in there so I'm counting that as ticked for now. My purse (actual purse, not american purse) is up-to-date, as is my rucksack. Coat pockets, however... there's probably a receipt and a shopping list still in there.
So. ToDo:
empty out coat pockets
put Which back in magazine drawer
send vicar feedback from (sigh) Monday's Zoom meeting
write up minutes from Zoom meeting
prepare veg toppings for pizza
make bed
stitch loose threads on all those pillowcases

ToMorrow
ironing (darks wash and gis)
make broccoli soup
hoover upstairs
wash the mattress protectors

Need to read something. I've spent the last year telling myself I'm going to read Casual Vacancy and Go Set a Watchman but haven't done either. Perhaps I should start with Frederica or The Fifth Elephant instead.

Oooh, long one, sorry...

swallowedAfly · 28/01/2022 17:09

I enjoyed Casual Vacancy.

Long day today and I came home freezing cold - classroom with open windows that I couldn't get to close but a heater that is too loud to teach over.

Trying to coax myself out from under the duvet and heated throw I've been shivering under since getting home.

Ooh Merry, I love both Frederica and The Fifth Elephant, but it's Frederica I turn to when my soul needs soothing. I fear I recognise a kindred spirit in another Managing Female.

Also, it took me 20 years to realise it was ok for me to be a morning person even if DH wasn't. If I'm going to write it has to be before 2pm. Anything after that is likely to be rubbish. We don't have to be joined at the hip (though we often are).

Swallowed sorry you got cold. Hope you are warm again now.

MrsTidy I very much recognise your starting with hope and vigour and running yourself into the ground model. I do it weekly, monthly and seasonally. I used to clean madly all of Monday (Home Bleugh which never took just an hour, with added extra bits of zone cleaning and bathrooms cos once a month is too grim for here) and knock myself out for the week.

This week my word has been Balance. I have realised if I am going to write or research or plan I need to dedicate 9-12 to it, because that is when my brain is sharp. Housework comes after that, however wrong it feels to sit at the desk without emptying the dishwasher first.

I was also really struck with a graphic that I saw on Insta (some of you might be familiar with it). It's not just hard work that makes things ok, I need sleep and good food and exercise and time outside and time of my own. I've managed this quite well the last couple of days, although I've walked three miles today, the furthest since my foot op, and now I'm flattened!

Ta da:

ta da
👑work at various points through the day including some tasks I’d been putting off, and an amazing meeting!
👑wandered round some shops and got various things including a book DD1 needs for studies
👑phoned student loan company re evidence

Earlier I was thinking maybe I’m actually not capable of doing more than work some days. Work isn’t difficult but then it seems to be the times I have something new and thus a bit scary, like today, where I can’t devote any brain space to anything else. Even if the new thing ends up being fine/easier and lovelier than expected. It’s like the whole “can’t do anything else while waiting for a phone call” thing. Maybe this will reduce the more experience I get as more tasks will seem run of the mill.

MrsTidyHouse · 29/01/2022 06:26

Getting up early to sort some laundry and straighten up the kitchen. I'm trying to cut back on the amount of stuff that lies on the worktops, and have emptied a couple of drawers of miscellaneous bits and pieces in order to put the stuff in there.

Defo to do:-
Tidy fridge-freezer.

Put away yesterday's delivery.

Make soup.

Hoover.
Paper.

Maybe:-
Garden tidy if weather not too wild.

Think of options for overgrown greenhouse.

Quick look round garage and shed where stuff is gradually being forgotten.

swallowedAfly · 29/01/2022 07:45

Morning.

Tada:
-Did an hour's work on the professional qualification I'm taking (so dull - read, reflect, read some more badly written stuff, click to complete type training)
-Did some more work on a lesson plan for an observation on Monday
-Emails etc

All of the above achieved because it didn't require getting out of bed Wink

Now need to set a po3 I think:
-gather whites and put on lol
-walk dog
-take out rubbish

Then I may have some it's Saturday chill with coffee and watch an episode of Ozark time.

Happy weekend everyone.

swallowedAfly · 29/01/2022 07:49

Actually I want to do a longer list and cross them off as I go through

-gather whites and put on lol
-walk dog
-take out rubbish
-feed animals
-deal with cat sick stain on landing carpet
-unload dw
-fold laundry on stand
-get at least all of ds's clean clothes put away
-tidy kitchen
-clean sink and do S&S of surfaces, tiles etc
-do shredding - massive backlog
-call friend I haven't spoken to in ages
-at least a 15min declutter/tidy session in lounge

SingToTheSky · 29/01/2022 09:26

Excellent use of Not Getting Out Of Bed working time there fly!

I can’t say the same here. DH brought breakfast to me and all I’ve done so far is the Wordle :o

Will have my usual chilled time later this morning when Cagletini is out (she’s exactly 48h since puking now) - really want to read or do maths or something.

So, so much more I should be doing but I’ll wait and see how I feel later. The box of stronger painkillers may be opened today Hmm

HillsBesideTheSea · 29/01/2022 12:48

Agree with sing Fly excellent use of not getting out of bed.

Couldn't sleep last night, did open the stronger but not prescription painkiller box. Slept til lunch.

Currently prepping kitchen to delegate the sugar soaping of the lower cupboard doors
Need to fix a 2nd drawer cultery tray unit though. But have no where to put the clean contents atm. So it will wait until tomo.

About to tape my knee, plaster with antiseptic my finger and get the weekend walk out of the way. But first there is a need for layered clothes because whilst the temp is in the low teens, that wind chill Hmm

Yesterday when I got home from work it was to a clean house! DD has been working really hard at keeping on top of the housework while we're at work, since she's done with school now and only works in the evenings.
Since she got everything handled, and had DS help after school, I just got to relax last night!

To do:
🥶 drink my 2nd cup of coffee (need to make sure no one dies today!)
🥶 meal plan for the week
🥶 grocery shopping list
🥶 place grocery pick up order for this afternoon
🥶 put post on fb with treats I'm making for Valentine's Day
🥶 finish the milk chocolate orange truffles that are still in the freezer, partially made at Christmastime
🥶 possibly make caramels as well
🥶 look on Amazon for treat bowls/ dishes to put the goodies in & hope I'm not too late ordering something 🤞
🥶 take the Jeep over to get washed at the carwash as my windows are really bad and everything is frozen (but the carwash is still up & running)

I did weigh in this morning, since I really got back on track last Saturday and I'm down 1.4lbs. It's not a huge loss, but that's OK. I'm feeling much better in myself and that's all that matters, plus it was my period week and I didn't gain or crave chocolate! 😱
Best get moving to get a decent pick up time

swallowedAfly · 29/01/2022 16:57

Ooh, wish you really could leave some home made caramels in the corner Hazel. Well done on the weight loss. I stalled for a bit and then realised I'd put a few lbs back on so need to get back on track.

gather whites and put on lol
walk dog
take out rubbish
feed animals
deal with cat sick stain on landing carpet
unload dw
-fold laundry on stand
-get at least all of ds's clean clothes put away
-tidy kitchen

About to try and tackle more in the kitchen. Ended up doing more school work and study and finished the new season of Ozark. I also researched how to get to a seminar I have to attend soon and booked my train tickets and did some of my 'daily' chores that check off on my app and mediated which I count as self care. Oh and I made myself a healthy mackerel salad for lunch and am trying to drink lots of water.

How are your pain levels now Sing? And Hills too by the sound of it?

StillUp · 29/01/2022 17:01

Well done on the weight loss Hazel!

Very windy here too Hills I have no intention of venturing out to test out the chill

Sing on my work days I absolutely don’t get plan on getting anything else achieved. Morning and evening routine and spending some time with DD when I get home is all I aim for.

I can totally relate to the cycle you describe Tidy!

You’ve been a busy bee Merry. I agree, it’s far harder to get things done with a DH underfoot.

I quite fancy starting Ozark next Fly. It’s on my list. I started ‘the woman across the street from the girl in the window’ yesterday. Got quite into it although a few things didn’t make sense or just wouldn’t happen in real life, but not sure if that’s part of the plot IYSWIM so I’m going to stick it out I think.

Not going to lie, I haven’t been all that productive since I last posted. I have:
⭐️ Done a bit more organising of both DD’s room with my new storage purchases. Both rooms are still a bit of a mess, but until we can get the one that needs painted done we can’t clear stuff out of the other.
⭐️ Organised the larder apart from the very top shelf
⭐️ tidied and reorganised a few kitchen cupboards, decluttering some old kids cups and stuff we never use
⭐️ tidied and decluttered DD’s craft trolley and colouring in books

All of the above has been done in 5-10 minute bursts and initially I felt like I was barely scratching the surface but I am seeing progress. Otherwise I’ve just been happy keeping on top of the laundry, kitchen and general tidiness, as well as spending time with DD1 playing and school stuff and keeping DD2 fed.

Today we had a visitor this morning so between DH and I we tidied up and did the downstairs floors. We were going to head out for the afternoon but the amber weather warnings have spoilt our plans and we are staying in. Can’t see much more being achieved today.

StillUp · 29/01/2022 17:02

Cross post Fly, you’re on fire today!

swallowedAfly · 29/01/2022 17:26

I'm really not Still - mostly in my bed. Sounds like you've gotten a lot of those never get round to it jobs done recently. Well done. I will await your review of, 'The woman across the street....'.

I gathered rubbish and recycling from upstairs, made it downstairs, refilled my water jug and put the recycling out and ran out of steam. Was going to fold stuff on clothes stand but some still damp from yesterday so perfect excuse. I've risked tumble drying ds's shirts and PE tops now as I can't hang them out.

I actually have a new decent sized clothes stand to deal with this problem of slow drying in winter but it needs putting together so has been sat in it's box since it arrived over a week ago typically.

Back in my bed marvelling over how I can do so little yet feel so tired.

SingToTheSky · 30/01/2022 00:06

I’m assuming “the woman across…” is a spoof? The title made me laugh anyway as I’ve watched so many thrillers with similar titles. I’ve been watching The Bay series 3 (itv) today.

That makes sense re not planning anything on work days up - you have busy work days! My work isn’t really like that though - it’s all very piecemeal IYSWIM. So some days I might have three two hour meetings, others only a couple of emails. And pretty much all from home. So I don’t feel quite as justified in not managing anything else 😳

I really need to think about how to manage my own time and energy - having flexible work is undoubtedly lucky and goodness knows it’s been a godsend this month when I’ve felt pretty unwell, but this month it’s felt like I’ve done far more than my basic hours when I haven’t. I’m not sure if that’s to do with the way I’m spreading out my time - maybe I need to be stricter about what times I’ll do the “can be done whenever” tasks. But I guess it’ll evolve - I’ve only been there four months.

Ladyrattles · 30/01/2022 01:27

MrsTidyHouse · 30/01/2022 06:08

Feel as though I was busy all day yesterday, then checked my to-do list this morning, and none of it got done apart from the absolutely essential laundry.

I did however manage to move things around on the kitchen worktop and find several fastenings and and screws to go in the Miscellaneous Ikea Bits pile in the understairs cupboard. It's a wonder some of our furniture stays standing.

Had two spectacularly long naps and tidied for an hour in the garden, so a lot better for that. Finessed my netflix list.

Today to do
load of school shirts and ties,
plan five easy yet nutritious teas for this week
Tidy fridge, food in general, kitchen. Defrost eggs.

THATunorganisedMUM · 30/01/2022 07:29

Oh shit

I properly fell off the thread

SingToTheSky · 30/01/2022 08:39

Hey that :o how’s the studying going, you had another essay due didn’t you?

I had a decent night’s sleep after watching some anime with the Caglets.

Really need to try harder to get ready for the week ahead today. I didn’t do any of my usual stuff last weekend and it really showed.

ExtremelyDetermined · 30/01/2022 08:45

I keep falling off too That - hope you're OK, in my case it's just general January-ness.

Hills - the blockers thing has got me thinking. I cleared one of the spaces which I thought would help unblock a chain of events-that-never-happen but it hasn't worked the way I hoped, I moved some other stuff into the space, but can't find a use for the secondary cleared space. That was - emptying a drawer in my bedside cabinet of card games and getting rid of 90% of them, filling the drawer with my nail stuff (I have lots) and using the space previously filled with mail stuff for something else. Well, the nail varnishes are all neatly standing up in baskets in the drawer and easy to choose from now, compared to them all just being chucked in a couple of big washbags before so its still an improvement. But the shelf the washbags were on stands empty and my dressing table is still cluttered. So I need to follow on from there.

Other blocker-changes this month have been getting a plastic basket in the bathroom for cleaning stuff so it's easier to move to clean the floor (we have toilet duck, spray, loo brush and a couple of other things and they are normally in a corner, now they are in a basket in a corner). One tiny bathroom for 2 teens and 2 adults is a recipe for clutter.

I have another case of clearing a space and finding no use for it too, I chucked out (gave to church) loads of the kids old craft stuff, it was in 4 stacking boxes in the cupboard under the stairs, in an awkward corner. So it needs to be for stuff that isn't needed too often.

My other small success this month has been little and often for various tidying/cleaning jobs, not letting them get out of hand and having to spend ages on them.
