Action Stations for August! Fledglings Flap Frantically and Swish’n’Swipe through Summer

Welcome one and all!

I’m quickly setting up the August thread (ok seriously I know someone says this every month but HOW is it August already?!) - MN has been a bit iffy today, and I got rather distracted this evening which I fear may be a portent of my hosting skills this month. Thank you to the lovely ED for steering us through July despite much to manage at home 💐

Anyway - do join in as we loosely follow the Flylady system, in order to gradually sort our houses out. The key word here is GRADUALLY. There is no turning the house upside down and banishing chaos overnight, there is slow and steady. You are never behind. Miss a day? Week? Decade? No worries, jump back in, it’ll all come round again.

Newbies always welcome!

Sigh. So much for that. Spent ages on the garlic as most cloves had gone horribly squidgy. Managed to cobble together enough, DS crushed it and grated the cheese etc but then I found the basil plant is covered in tiny white flies and eggs. Really not fussed by the odd bug, happy to just give dirty leeks/lettuce etc a quick rinse, but this freaked me out. DH was going to Asda anyway so a slight change of plan for dinner. I can usually keep food related anxiety at bay these days but this was a test too far 😬😣

It seems to be the evening for panic, as DD1 came back from dancing feeling unwell/struggling to breathe and is really anxious and upset.

OP posts:
Mc3209 · 13/08/2021 21:24

Today was Friday 13th. I hope everyone reached the end of it intact. Are you, ladies, superstitious? Sometimes I can't help it, but try not to be 😬

Sing sorry to hear about your DD1. Do you know what triggered that?
Re talk, I am not sure about the logistics of pre recording myself 😂 I am hoping it will become clear in the due course, I am expecting to be contacted by organisers with more details.
Hills that's so frustrating re vaccine. I hope you will find an answer.
Zoo those heels sound fabulous! Do you have a pic? Would love to see them.

Ta das:
💥Recycling out
💥Cleaned and organised the fridge
💥Threw the hoover around

halfhope · 13/08/2021 21:58

I did notice it was Fri 13th MC 😳

IWillWashTheGreenWillow · 13/08/2021 22:03

Evening all, just popping in to say I'm home with a very sexy orthopaedic sandal and some crutches. Basically I am to do nothing but pop painkillers and wiggle my toes for a fortnight! I have some gentle physio to do to keep hips, knees and ankles moving, and a very attractive compression stocking for the other leg. Oh, and two weeks of fragmin injections 😭

I'm about to attempt stairs, I hope to be in bed by 11! 😁

SingToTheSky · 13/08/2021 23:01

Oh no is that the anti clotting thing willow? I had them after Cagletini was born and I did get used to it but the first couple I had to ask DH to do 😄

Mc not sure - she’s never been a wheezy child (unlike DS who used to get that a lot). She had a cough several weeks ago now (obv isolated at the time and tested - negative) and the cough went away now but she is feeling restricted and sounds a bit wheezy. Eeeek re the talk! Hope you get more information soon.

ta da
🧽finished covering letter
🧽five questions of final assignment
🧽sugar soaped bathroom door
🧽sprayed and scrubbed bath sealant and tiles
🧽final coat on radiator
🧽shower and defrost
🧽walk to town for ECG/blood test
🧽bit of shopping including using giftcard
🧽forced self to rest a while
🧽sorted and recycled a few bits
🧽printed stuff for Cagletini
🧽more edge masking/painting
🧽wrote up some lessons
🧽made dinner (eventually!)

Going to go and watch something relaxing on my phone I think, today has ended up a bit stressful! Friday 13th indeed!

Also we have no sofa again, and won’t until the beginning of October at the earliest. Old sofa has been falling apart for months, but the springs are now sticking out and are definitely unsafe! So the room is Different. And I have too much to do this weekend and I’m tired and achy and grumpy. 😳

HazelNuttyElf · 14/08/2021 05:36

Phew! I just caught up with the thread. Congrats to all on results, it's great when you get what you need to move forward.
I haven't done much flying the last few days due to work, other than rotating DW and wiping down the countertops.

I did go out for dinner with a couple of friends tonight, had one of them drop me off and she came in to see the new house. There was a part of me that was embarrassed by my house, it's not dirty, but there were a few things out and we have a lot of things that still don't have homes. She does know we just moved, but it doesn't change how I feel.
Anyway, we are getting our dining room window turned into French doors tomorrow and I'm super excited! That does mean a lot more mess and dust, but it'll be worth it. We still have to finish the half wall too.

I'm falling asleep, so I best be off, sorry for lack of personals 😔
🍒👋 to everyone

HazelNuttyElf · 14/08/2021 05:38

Oh, I do want to say that I'm glad your operation went well willow I hope you have a full and speedy recovery.
Sing massive ta das today, just don't overdo it

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/08/2021 06:16

hope french doors go in with minimal fuss
Willow glad it went ok.does this mean more time to hang out with us,or will you be working?
Sing for future ref do you have any dry basil?we do a pea pesto using some dry basil and dry parsley/mint.i wouldn't have eaten egg/fly covered herbs either.hope DD ok,allergic reaction perhaps?dd2 was very wheezy yesterday and complained tight chest day before.i believe nettles are high pollen at mo and we had been walking near those...
MC will try a pic later.i used be highly superstitious,my dad was very much so,but I met "d"p whilst dd1 was in class 13(in hindsight perhaps that was a sign of things to come?🤣) And dd2 was born on 13th.my "favourite" labour as felt calmer and more in control despite ending up being longer than first attempt!being overdue she shared her birthday with cousin and my great aunt💖

Mad day ahead
Hopefully off to town to acquire dd2 shoes for the wedding, perhaps a bag for me and other bits we need.
DS due home from dd1 lunchtime.
Need check tracking on dress too
For now I need get up and do some tidying as his nibs arriving 730 so we can be at home bargains for 8 when they open!

Lovely shoes zoo Smile

Sing I wouldn't have eaten the basil either, I wonder what they are on it 🤔 have you had a Google ?

I'm not superstitious, especially not about Friday 13th since my birthday is the 13th of a month Smile

I had two glasses of wine last night and have woken up with a headache 😣 still in bed, have drunk a pint of water, a cup of tea and take some painkillers. Better get up and sort breakfast though. Dd wants to go on a bike ride today, fresh air will probably help.

Mc3209 · 14/08/2021 08:15

Zoo oh I like them! I bet they will look stunning on you 🥰
These must be the famous tic-tacs that power your impressive ta das!
Hazel I know the feeling you are describing. I do think, though, that we are a lot tougher on ourselves when it comes to our homes, than people who come to visit. I am sure your friend was admiring your house, and not seeing things that were out.
I love French doors. Hope it all goes smoothly with putting them in.
Willow glad all went well with your foot. Have a good rest and recoperation!

foxessocks · 14/08/2021 08:16

Sorry totally forgot to say glad everything went ok yesterday and you're back home willow

ExtremelyDisorganised · 14/08/2021 08:22

Those are gorgeous Zoo, absolutely stunning. I gave up on heels a few years ago (bad back, wide feet, bad combination) but sometimes I feel very tempted back when I see a fabulous pair.

Superstition - my DM is very superstitious, she still surprises me with ones I never knew about so I have pushed back against it all. One of my DCs is a Friday 13th baby and its not something that bothers me at all. In fact I do sometimes turn a calendar page over early or similar just to wind my mum up.

Flying - the house is gradually returning to order now the kitchen is fitted out and we have space to put everything back in there, a much appreciated lull in activity from the tradespeople this week, we had the worktops fitted but that was all. Taps, water softener, flooring and tiling still to go, plus finishing touches (plinths etc). Determined the new kitchen will be tidier than the old one ever was.

HillsBesideTheSea · 14/08/2021 09:02

Interesting that the friday 13th superstition came with the christian religion. It was traditionally a day connected to women, and special for them. I do not come from a house where there was superstition around friday 13th despite it being ultra religious (i pushed back against the religion) some of the other superstitions (like not walking under a ladder) make more sense. Some of the ones connected to trees also make sense.

I have been up since 7 but not achieved much yet. Only managed to get one hair plait in. I have a lot to do but my motivation is awol. Hmm

to do
deal with kitchen
prep pie filling
hoover kitchen floor and wash it
tidy bathroom
hoover floor
wash floor
remove old sealant
apply sealant to shower edge and bath edge
Remove stuff dumped on a person's bed as a temp holding ground
Try not to LMS when the people get back
make pie
early night.

And that they say is plenty

FB just reminded me that today is the birthday of a friend who died earlier this year Sad shark week is due so i am more fragile anyway.

HillsBesideTheSea · 14/08/2021 09:04

Also i would love to have a collection of the unusual superstitions. There is a lot of interesting research that can be done around superstitions. I am sure there was a thread a long time around, but i suspect it was in Chat so long gone.

IWillWashTheGreenWillow · 14/08/2021 09:45

That's the sort of information I like to collect too, Hills! I love the idea that some of them have common sense roots and some seem to be batshit. Why, exactly is 13 unlucky, rather than (say) 11, or 17? I'm sorry about your friend, birthdays afterwards are hard. Good luck not LYS.

13 is lucky in our family - my parents were married on the 13th, their first flat was number 13, my sister - a much longed for rainbow baby - was born on Friday 13th and we got engaged by accident on Friday 13th (DH was aiming for the Saturday, Valentine's day, but couldn't hold it in and asked me Friday night instead 💕!). Friday 13th for surgery seemed auspicious.

Zoo what glorious shoes! You will be a beautiful Mother Of The Bride. Hope the early shopping went well with "d"P. I should have more time to hang out on here, I've "signed myself off work" for at least two weeks and I certainly won't be flying!

Hazel I'm sure your friend was very aware you've only recently moved and are still knocking the house about, but I recognise the feeling that you should be tidier. Hope the french doors go in easily and cleanly, they change of the whole feel of a room I think.

Foxes hope the headache has cleared. Well done on your super whizz round the house yesterday.

Sing how are you going to manage without a sofa til October 😱? Have you got beanbags or something in the interim? Please pace yourself today, you're doing brilliantly and it would be a real shame to crash and burn.

Mc I had to laugh at "threw the hoover round". I know exactly what you mean, but it conjures up images of someone chucking a hoover into a room then not understanding why it's not magically clean! Glad the brain is returning.

Right, posting this before I lose it all again. Back later with more!
