Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Bit uncomfortable Foxes.
I am on my iPad. We have one each as DH got one as a gift for long service. DH and kids clubbed together about 6 years ago to buy mine. I hardly use my phone and I would find it difficult to see for long as too tiny. I wear glasses. Varifocal glasses nowadays.

Had an awful night of sleep so slept in this morning. I really need to go back to routine going to bed. DH stayed up last night so I did he went up and I fell asleep on sofa upright. Went up at 2am. Idiot.

Thanks for the links foxes I could manage that today before builder comes.
Hills I hear you regarding builders as much as I love DD** I wish it was all done and the joiner came to do the kitchen door and the painter came and painted the hall and I could get the bloody great bookcase out of my room and all the stuff DH dumped in my craft room. I was so looking forward to doing some Christmas projects and decluttering them as gifts. I cant even get to that side of the room. It looks like something out of hoarders without the food and cat faeces!

Right I need to crack on. Kitchen first then sort sitting room. Bit of dining room then ironing pile. Ned and Ted are no where to be seen and using lockdown as an excuse to skive off.🤬

foxessocks · 25/11/2020 11:36

And now I've realised we have no butter and I forgot to order any to can't make the mince pies anyway, the one thing I wanted to do today!

I've called dh who happens to be driving past a supermarket so he's going to grab the butter. I am going to try doing a power hour of cleaning instead to make me feel like I haven't just wasted my morning 🤦‍♀️

The builders hammering is vibrating the house so much that things have fallen off shelves Hmm

I have done half the studies i need, headphones with a podcast and got lost in bujo prep.

internet is monumentally shit and keeps dropping out Hmm

I am avoiding people. I suspect this is wisest.

woolly you do have rather nice legs

SingToTheSky · 25/11/2020 14:24

Woolly that’s an interesting idea! I had just been thinking after your tights photo that I heard someone say recently what’s the point in wearing boring black and white clothes! I’m not really into clothes at all, it is all about comfort (and indeed I have shoved whatever was to hand on for shopping 😳) but I have been gradually building my collection of fabulous bright leggings and I should get back in the habit of wearing them at home (it’s a bit chilly outdoors).

ta da continued
☁️Bit more home ed
☁️Planning for the last few weeks of term - already feels more relaxed!
☁️Brushed my hair and got dressed
☁️Phone call with work coach, she is so lovely and doesn’t expect more of me than I am capable of right now
☁️Resisted temptation to eat rubbish and made myself/Cagletini a yummy healthful lunch
☁️Made some time to watch a bit of an old favourite cartoon movie, I wasn’t even concentrating really but it was comforting to have it on in the background.

SingToTheSky · 25/11/2020 14:28

Oh and ta da
☁️Emailed link to my blog to work coach and re-uploaded old posts
☁️Finally replied to therapist

Just going to sign back into the PlayStation after it was playing silly buggers earlier (cue rather anxious DS) and then I WILL make myself go into town, I can’t remember if I’ve left the house since Saturday.

HillsBesideTheSea · 25/11/2020 15:03

Builders - hopefully gone by end of week. No idea when they will be done tbh.

Need to get teen and myself to a point where we are functioning for the doc appointment.

foxessocks · 25/11/2020 15:59

I am in a real grump this afternoon Sad

merryhouse · 25/11/2020 16:24

Well, I've made a spag bol, and some mince pies (sorry foxes) with H's leftover pastry from Sunday; but that's about it.

Going to do the evening exercise class after tea, see how that goes.

The Bake-Off decision was the right one, but I was sad about the mistakes in the final. Always think it's much better to have everyone feeling they've done well (which is why Hermine's departure was so upsetting).

Oh, we did have a brief chat with next-door neighbour who was going round delivering Starter Packs Grin for the zoom mulled wine party.

S2 forgot to charge his phone so his alarm didn't go off. Managed to get to school on time - he said it's amazing how quickly you can get out of the house when you're not distracted by your phone...

Merry I know what you mean about teens off phones are like lightening when nec!I am torn between longing for the old days when they didn't have them and appreciating the break, and be able check on them when they out/on way home from school/if plans change

SingToTheSky · 25/11/2020 19:00

ta da
☁️Left the house! Walked down to town, with a detour in the park to spin a few extra pokestops and get extra fresh air.
☁️Dropped off a few library books and collected my other ones, saw a friend (I used to work there)*
☁️Picked up some shopping very efficiently with a list! Woohoo.
☁️Found some turkey twizzlers in Iceland 😂 school dinners of my youth. They aren’t quite like I remember, but for a bit of nostalgia it was worth it 😂
☁️Sorted log in to handwriting home ed subscription (need to get an iPad stylus)
☁️Paid for new maths sub and messaged about another one

*A question related to seeing friends - anyone else finding it quite draining to have conversations now? I’ve not seen this friend since before lockdown #1 and we’d normally have a good natter when I popped into the library but I quickly ran out of steam and things to say, TBH! Mind you I think it was partly the masks, it’s so hard to hear what people are saying! 🤦‍♀️

Must edit the tesco order tonight - this is the last delivery for about ten days as next week is all booked up, so need to plan carefully to avoid too much need for heavy supermarket shopping.

SingToTheSky · 25/11/2020 19:21

😋

What do people use coconut oil for? We now have a part jar of it to use up. Not that I’d mind if he just made more cake of course. 🤣

Ooh, now a gluten free brownie would be very well received!

And I was actually considering starting a thread about frizzy hair, so I shall try that first. My hair is AWFUL. Especially round my forehead it is a total mane of frizz.

foxessocks · 25/11/2020 19:37

Thanks everyone, just one of those days really, I did make the mince pies in the end but I burnt them 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ luckily dd asked me what the smell was which reminded me and they were just about salvageable but not the best I've ever made!!

And I'm pretty sure my brother has decided not to come for Christmas (he's calling later but has hinted) , which is a huge shame because they haven't made it to us for the last 3 Christmases because of one thing or another but they have decided they don't want to travel which I completely understand but still. My youngest nephew was born at the start of the year and I've seen him twice Sad

But I realise everyone is in the same situation. Honestly I'm sick of it all now!! I haven't spoken to some of my friends for so long, I think everyone has just given up!?

I have poured a glass of wine so when my brother calls later I will be much more chilled out about it all 😂

Sorry for the moan everyone!

OP posts:
foxessocks · 25/11/2020 19:38

I have frizzy hair too sing and never found anything to sort it out! Occasionally I have a good hair day with no frizz and I wish I knew why!!

OP posts:
foxessocks · 25/11/2020 19:39

Also I'm so sorry if I'm being insensitive because I'm sure lots of you have seen family members even less than twice this year Sad

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 25/11/2020 20:06

I use coconut to moisturise my hair. Little goes a long way. A very long way.

I think it is just getting to every one foxes and no matter how much we haven't seen people it hurts. Especially when families are close. Personally not seen some family for nearly 2 years and the quiet is blissful. I miss not being able to get away from people. But then I am just plain weird like that. I feel for people who need people to feel balanced and happy.

Doctors appointment has lead to the predictable referral to CAMHS. I have a lot of mixed feelings about this. Teen is happy with it for now. And it is the only route available. It has however been the straw that broke the camels back and despite the fact I have done a proper comfort tea I am ready to sit in the corner and cry. I am done. Resilience is done.

SingToTheSky · 25/11/2020 20:09

Foxes it’s not insensitive to be sad about it or to talk about it! As I read the other day, if you break a leg you don’t spend the whole time saying well I’m fine because other people might break both legs. 😂 It’s really ok to acknowledge it. 💐

Daaaaaamn that was good cake.

Somehow Cagletini is still awake. Sigh.

HillsBesideTheSea · 25/11/2020 20:09

^^ Sing says it better!

SingToTheSky · 25/11/2020 20:10

Oh hills :( have a cry, I hope it helps. 💐
