Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

So much to catch up on! I've got some reading to do on here.

Ta da:
🎉LOL X2
🎉All mop-able floors mopped.
🎉Whole house hoovered
🎉 Bedroom decluttered
🎉DW rotated
🎉Went for a walk

Bake off final - winner deserved to win, that's all I am saying!

Now off to wash the baby and then sleep.

Mc3209 · 24/11/2020 21:11

Cross post Sherin Welcome! I came to this thread pregnant too. It's a very lovely friendly corner, and it really helped me get into good habits before baby arrived.

Bowerbird5 · 24/11/2020 21:11

Yeah Peter won Bake Off!

Just lost all the post🤬

Sorry should have said about Bake Off just so excited didn’t think some one might not watch until later.
Can’t plan anything. DDbuilder didn’t turn up Sat/Sun texted coming at 1pm then turned up at 11:15 due to him being on the ladder and plank resting on stairs I couldn’t go in boudoir as planned.
Put chutney away which ended up me cleaning out cupboard well most of it. Lovely plastered ceiling and one wall. Shame bookcase has to go back.

SingToTheSky · 24/11/2020 22:37

Ah no worries bower DD1 came downstairs having seen the result on my DSD’s Instagram too 😂 and we’ve been enjoying watching it anyway.

It is one of the meet ups tomorrow but I’ve not booked. I’m sooo not in the mood to socialise 😳 which feels quite ungrateful of me really since we are very lucky that these HE events can go ahead in lockdown. I might go on Friday.

Bowerbird5 · 24/11/2020 22:42

Welcome Sherin and Macken.

My house is a tip DH is bringing stuff into sitting room so tomorrow I will do that and kitchen. He is going out and having takeaway with DS 3
And posting DDs cards and prints to gallery. Her Christmas cards are lovely.
I got my first Christmas card from my cousin today. Homemade gorgeous card. We used to love doing arty things together as teenagers she was my best friend we are a month apart. I really need to get genned up on IT so we have more contact.

Can’t really remember what I have done today.
Cleaned out a cupboard, rearranged some books, earmarked some to go. Cooking, kitchen cleaning, lunch washing up. Vacuumed all downstairs. S&S. That is about it .

SingToTheSky · 24/11/2020 23:09

Forgot a ta da
✴️Did week 1 of my maths course

Nothing else happening this evening. Feel quite low still TBH and am forcing myself to go to bed, but I’m going to watch another episode (watching an ITV drama, think it’s called flesh and blood?).

Tinselette · 24/11/2020 23:46

It's a bit dreary today sing - just snuggle up. Welcome new fledglings 💐🎉👍 Watched Bake Off - there were tears in this house. What an achievement for them all in this odd year with a crew in lockdown with them. I think the right person won but it was close. New duvet cover has arrived and gas been washed - it's a fleecy Santa one for Christmas. Need to put final wood coat on shelves and door frame. Then Thursday is door painting. Strip carpet out and sand skirting for painting after joiner next week. Getting there!

Tinselette · 24/11/2020 23:47

Has been washed I meant.

SingToTheSky · 24/11/2020 23:57

Yeah the weather doesn’t help. It just never feels light at all. I’m trying to mitigate it this year a bit - I’ve done well taking a high dose of vitamin D pretty consistently for months, and most days I’m managing to air the house out, which I was terrible at before, so there is fresher air circulating. But other aspects of looking after myself are slipping yet again and I’m not going outside as much at the moment, even for a walk or to do the nursery run, sleep is up the spout again too.

I have just set up my salt lamp and pretty wax warmer in my room though. Trying to make it a bit more cosy. Going to curl up and watch the episode now as at least it’s better relaxation than just mindless scrolling. Hopefully.

SingToTheSky · 25/11/2020 00:10

Oh and I was a bit sniffly at the end of bake off too. They seem like such a lovely bunch. I loved the catch up on what they’ve all done since too.

Tomorrow is going to be a bit meh I think. Really need to get to the shops if I can though.

Mc3209 · 25/11/2020 02:23

Tinselette Sounds like some serious renovation business happening. You are a lady on a mission.
Sing I don't like darkness too. In the past I used one of those natural light lamps, I think it's called a SAD (seasonal affective disorder) lamp, which helped with the winter funk. I haven't used it in few years now though.

I am intrigued by what a salt lamp is... Of to Google I go.

HazelNuttyElf · 25/11/2020 05:08

I got a few more things done, but not everything on my list.
Ta Das continued..
🦊 2 more LOLs
🦊 Pick DD up from school early (she felt dizzy and sick and was white as a ghost when I got there)
🦊 Workout done, yay!
🦊 Dusted the whole house quickly
🦊 Rotated DW x2
🦊 Washed hand wash dishes
🦊 Sorted out fridge, found that some stuff was growing that shouldn't have been 🤢
🦊 Picked up groceries
🦊 Went to another store to pick up a couple things needed
🦊 Picked up DS from school
🦊 DS took the bin to the front for me
🦊 Watched a couple movies with DD
🦊 Made dinner - bacon cheddar cauliflower chowder, per request made by DS
🦊 Wiped countertops down again
🦊 Made pastry for pumpkin pie, doubled the recipe and put half in the freezer, for Christmas
🦊 Made myself a drink and fell onto the couch

Back to work tomorrow. I didn't clean the bathroom, I'll have DC do it tomorrow as there's no school the rest of the week. I also didn't make my butter pecan cream pie either, but it shouldn't take me long tomorrow night.
We're all at work tomorrow in the office so might spend some time sorting out some dreaded areas of the office. I won't get rid of anything, but will organise it better. It's very daunting, but there are papers in there from the 70's that have to be kept.

zoo I'm glad you made progress with camhs, but sorry to hear you didn't get your nap.
merry well done for getting your ironing done, that was one thing I didn't do today (and very well could have 🤦‍♀️)
bower phones are definitely taking over our lives, one way or another. I stopped getting on Facebook because I was not getting anything done and my day was gone with nothing to show for it. Hopefully DH will pay more attention to you now.
Sing you still have quite a list of ta das of you put all of them together. We all know you have a lot on your plate right now too.

Stilllivinginazoo · 25/11/2020 05:29

sing being kind to yourself is very important.if you change one thing I'd say get outside in the morning.apparently it helps your body clock with sleep rhythms and whilst you won't feel like doing it over time it does make a difference
Dark evenings don't bother me but dark mornings do.especially as gets colderFlowers

HazelNuttyElf · 25/11/2020 06:31

I missed a whole page!
I do tend to wake up just before 7am on Tuesdays, have my cup of coffee before everyone wakes up and make DHs breakfast before he heads to work. Then I take the DC to school. I'm usually back home by 8:20am so have a few hours to myself to get things done. That's how I'm able to fit lots in.
glittery most of the things on my list are jobs that only take a few minutes each. I may have spent 15 minutes dusting my house today as it was just a quick job. I did get to fit in 2 full movies this afternoon. Of course your list is very long too. Definitely sounds like a baking day to me, I bet your house smells amazing!
Oooh tinselette a shiny new Christmas duvet cover. I would love to see it!
Right I'm off to bed now, it's 11:30pm and late for me. I have to wake up by 5:30am for work 😴 although it really doesn't matter how much I try, I can never seem to get to bed before 10:45pm.
🍒👋 to everyone I haven't mentioned.

HazelNuttyElf · 25/11/2020 06:32

X- post zoo good morning, I hope you have a great day

ExpensivelyDecorated · 25/11/2020 06:41

I woke at 5am and wondered why, then I realised it was the sound of the heating coming on, I set it early on Wednesdays for DD's swimming which of course isn't happening at the moment. Oh well. I have been up crocheting for an hour now which is nice but need to shift now and do some actual stuff.

foxessocks · 25/11/2020 06:55

sherin and macken welcome!!

I haven't caught up with the thread, my day off today so hopefully will be able to have a proper read through later.

Not an early riser here by any means.

Ds is school refusing again. Its GCSE year. Mocks are next week. I am not happy. Thank fuck the Doctor's appointment is this afternoon!!!

Another day of builders. I need to get dressed and move my car. And then if I can function do some study. I was going to wash the teen's bedding but as he is occupying that space there is nothing that I can do about that today.

My to do list is still massive and huge. And i have no energy to waste on stupid arguments. So everyone is picking stupid arguments. It really is like living in a kindergarten sometimes An having microwave and 1 ring and slow cooker to cook 2 meals each night is getting to me. Can the builders hurry up and be done yet? Or can I just go back to work and leave them all to it? actually a lottery win so I could move would be grand

HillsBesideTheSea · 25/11/2020 08:47

Welcome to the newbies.

Mc this is my salt lamp with my warmer in the background. Supposedly there are health benefits including reduced anxiety 🤔 but really I just wanted a low light and this was cheap 😂 and woolly I’ve taken note of you mentioning having a scented candle for helping DH/DSs focus, and am making more of an effort to put the warmer on like when I was studying the other day!

Thanks zoo that’s useful advice about getting out in the morning. I keep putting it off as I feel guilty taking any time for myself (entirely my issue, NOT DH making me feel like that) until it’s too late. My last therapy was partly discussing that so I need to make more effort.

I did have a SAD light mc but it was the kind where you were meant to sit right in front of it for a set time each day and I found it so uncomfortable 😳 I need to look into the newer ones though that would just be on instead of a regular lamp.

I’m so gutted, this time last year I was just starting on my ADHD meds and although they took some getting used to it was amazing suddenly being able to focus! I haven’t heard back from the psychiatrist yet, need to chase that up as she can hopefully let me try a non-stimulant instead. 😣

Right I need to get up, drag myself into the shower/clean clothes and sort DS out. I am so tired. Heavy, fatigue sort of tired not sleep tired (although more sleep wouldn’t hurt 😂).

po3.1
🎯weigh in, shower, dressed
🎯make new weekly plan sheet (bit late I know!) for DS that is just an overall target rather than set things on each day - it’s been nice to be more relaxed and he’s still got a reasonable amount of work done so I think it’s the way forward
🎯breakfast/vitamins

I'm back, with a coffee and a chocolate cookie! Glittery love the tights! A bit of colour on a very gloomy day is a great thing!

Sing sorry you're feeling down Sad . I have a book called the four pillars by Dr. Chaterjee (he has been on a few TV programmes) and I found it very helpful, it suggests 20 minutes spent outside every morning. Lots of other helpful stuff in the book too and you don't have to stick to it all just pick what works for you. And actually this has reminded me to revisit it as lots of the habits have stuck but one thing I must do is stay off my phone as much as possible (she says on her phone right now Blush). I find staring at my phone for too long drains me.

Hills sorry about the stupid arguments. I hope the coffee has helped a little Brew

Ta das
School and nursery run
Tidied kitchen
Tidied living room
Emptied bins
Mopped kitchen and downstairs loo
Spent 15 minutes sorting bedroom, put books on local FB page in case anyone wants any, sorted all my clothes out that were on the floor (again) Blush, cleared out under my side of the bed

My main aim for the rest of the day is to make mince pies 😀

They look great woolly! Some of my friends swear by Snag.

ta da so far
☁️Had glass of OJ with vitamins
☁️Five min tidy in kitchen
☁️Delegated a few tasks to DS (recycling etc)
☁️Put bedding/towel wash on
☁️Disinfected potty
☁️Started new format weekly plan for DS
☁️Got DS to start work
☁️Updated personal spends spreadsheet

Not showered yet and only just having breakfast - I gave up earlier when I poured OJ into my empty bowl instead of the cup. 🤦‍♀️

DH is thankfully sorting the kitchen (it’s horrific despite my quick scoot round) but is annoyed - Ikea have gone incommunicado and never delivered our order the other day. 🤬
