Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

We have toffee apples in the naughty corner?! Huh well that's a treat Halloween Shock Welcome handbaghag

Bower - you can still meet your friend in tier 2 it just has to be outside. A socially distanced walk together with side by side rather than facing conversation seems to be the preferred way to go around here. You just have to remember the distanced bit. Obviously all bets are off as of Thursday. Sorry to hear about your sister. I hope that you can find out where she is and how she is, and that she improves.

Foxes it is 11am I am still in bed having just about managed breakfast and coffee. I nearly fell down the stairs last night, the wall broke my fall before i did. But everything hurts this morning. Going to be a slow on. So take heed. Sometimes renewing your spirit means not much gets done and you allow yourself to be ok with that. You're doing a great job. Thanks for taking on the threat.

sing i also have issues with out of control to do lists, i hope that your new system works for you.

I am funny because i have a laptop I work from my bed. Probably bad for sleep, but i can get propped up in just the right position to support my back and other bits that often hurt (knees/shoulders etc) Thankfully I don't have to deal with zoom calls cos otherwise i would be having to discover the background feature and move. I hope all that need are able to find comfy positions for working in!

I have no idea if i will be furloughed again, requested to work or made redundant. This next week is going to be interesting. That is for sure.

Right that is plenty procrastination.
To do:
Laundry
Finish evicting stuff from the study
tidy the random crap on the floor
ensure room is actually tidy and ready for the teen to return to dwelling in it
Collect teen

to the other fledglings.
ED thank you for running the thread last month. I won't offer for a while if you forgive me, I don't think it would be fair. Unless the fledglings want me to take on the January thread which is always an adventure anyway...Anyhows, happy to lead if it is wanted but wont offer for now. iyswim. you remember my threads - yikes Halloween GrinGrin

Hope you get some news soon Bower.

Ouch Hills, glad you managed to save yourself!

Hi Handbag. The naughty corner is as good a place to start again as any Grin .

Love the new name poster formerly known as Wellies, I think you may have to become glitter? Glad the leak is sorted.

Foxes I like that poem. Hope you manage to renew your spirit. Any meal planning tips gratefully accepted here! I’m not bad at it when I do it, it’s just the doing it...

Star for Mr Sing on letting go of some tops.

So far I’m having one of those days where I’m fighting against the tide to keep the place in order. DD is hyper from all the Halloween sugar, leaving destruction in her path. I’ve given up for now and I’ve managed to settle her down to watch a Halloween film under a cozy blanket (in the name of spirit renewal, obvs).

Ta Das:
✅ shower
✅ LOL in and yesterday’s forgotten load hung up
✅ beds made
✅ upstairs s&s
✅ bacon sarnies for breakfast, tomato soup for lunch
✅ DW loaded and set off
✅ few bits hand washed
✅ soup splodges cleared from table, floor and DD
✅ Halloween items put away
✅ umpteen conversations about why DD can’t possibly have more sweets usually ended with me handing over one last sweet
✅ family what’sapp call
✅ clean washing carried upstairs and thrown in general direction of correct home.

Thank you for all your reassurances re breastfeeding.
Flushi loving the name!
Handbaghag hello 👋I've actually grown to like shining the sink every night. It feels almost ritualistic.
Hills sorry to hear about your fall, it sounds painful. I hope you feel better soon.
Bower hoping you will get good news about your sister soon.

Up I took your advice and stayed away from a hoover. DH is really stepping up this week, given how messy he normally is I am pleasantly surprised and appreciative.

Ta da:
🎉LOL X1

To do:

  • aquarium maintenance. DH will help with buckets of water for smaller tanks. Thankfully I have a python system for a big tank.
  • plan and refresh Christmas decorations. I am determined to step it up this year. Usually I tend to do it in a quite minimalist fashion (mainly because I am not great at arranging all the bits to look pretty together), but this year I am going to make a bigger effort for festive season.
  • write thank you cards and send them at some point next week
  • book cars for MOT and service (well, that's more for tomorrow).

Now it's time for a cup of coffee methinks.

Woolly it is indeed a sign of being too tired and the fact that I am struggling with my breathing to the point I am periodically getting a blue tinge to my lips. I am trying to be more mindful of the rest that is needed when I notice the exhaustion creeping in.

I am having to admit defeat on the study. I am not going to get it all done today. Need to move a few things from temp storage in the teens room, and put some laundry on. Only an hour before I head out to get the teen. Weather is horribly wet and windy. No late leaving and a good book to sit and wait i think will be the answer today. And maybe i might treat myself to some chocolate...

bower I’m really sorry to hear about your sister, I hope you hear from her soon.

I hope you aren’t feeling too ill THAT

Hi handbag!

Thank you mc😀. I hope you are finding establishing breastfeeding a bit easier, and enjoying newborn cuddles.

I haven’t really done much today. I’m feeling a bit meh about the lockdown. I basically put yesterday on hold to watch the announcement, but it kept getting put back. I work in a nursery and am glad they’re staying open, and I know I’m very lucky that I’ll still be working but I was enjoying getting slightly back to normal. I’ve made breakfast and lunch and done the general making beds, washing up etc but that’s all I will do tonight I think. We are watching stickman, as it is now officially Christmas season for me and DD loves it.

ta da continued
🐇sorted odd socks
🐇had a proper lunch (goats cheese and walnuts on a wholemeal bagel)
🐇moved laundry on
🐇small whites wash
🐇wrote list for town
🐇ordered Christmas/home ed related things
🐇loads of planning/printing for the next week (work in progress)
🐇tried making plans for the week, but it all requires other people who don’t like making decisions
🐇got DS to put his laundry and the clean towels away

I wimped out of going to town after I’d sat around too long, the thought of the inevitable crowds was too much. Nothing was needed urgently today anyway.

Back to nursery tomorrow - it’s snuck round oddly fast, because I was convinced Cagletini would get a fever etc from her flu spray on Friday, but she seems absolutely fine! So I must be my future friend and sort her stuff. DH has a meeting at 12 so I’ll be picking her up, luckily my foot feels a lot better.

PO3.3
❗️More HE planning for the week
❗️Write out what is expected of the Caglets each evening between dinner and getting screens back in the evening
❗️Pack Cagletini’s nursery bag

But in the meantime I’m watching Phineas and Ferb with DS. :o

Hi all 👋 sorry to hear of some aches, pains and shortness of breath among you. I hope you all get well soon.

I haven't posted during the week, a lot has gone on. I've just about managed to keep up reading, but no time to post.
Quick summary of my week:
🎃 Cake baked for a birthday at work (went down a treat but still have some left)
🎃 Assisted MIL in seeing if anything was stolen from our storage unit, she caught them in the act, confronted them and called police - who discovered a shotgun on the backseat of their vehicle. She was lucky and sternly told never to do that again! Nothing was missing so they only got a ticket, not arrested.
🎃 Met up with friends for an evening of shopping at a local boutique
🎃 Had a movie night on Friday night while waiting for DD to get done with work
🎃 Spent all day Saturday (Halloween) preparing food for that night, made caramel apple slices picture attached
🎃 DS had friends stay over (2 of them) and DD went to her aunt's house
🎃 Made the boys breakfast this morning, rotated DW and drank 2 cups of coffee (I may need a 3rd)

To do:
🍁 Send boys home (they're so loud!)
🍁 Wash handwash dishes
🍁 Get dressed(!)
🍁 Empty flowerpots that are outside and put the pots away
🍁 Redo my gel nails from Halloween to autumn design
🍁 RELAX!

🍒👋 to everyone and 💐 to whoever needs them.

Thanks everyone. Just had a text from baby sister to say other sister is in Aberdeen and on medication so sleeping most of the time. So worried and I don’t know what I should do. Even if I went up I can’t see her. No visitors. At least she is in a good hospital.

Hills sorry to hear about your fall. It is so easy to slip on the stairs.
I hope you haven’t set a precedent for the fledglings this month! I slipped, knocked the water bowl over soaking my foot in cold water and then slipped more bumping my head on the corrugated plastic on the chicken coop roof. I now have a red bump and a dent in my forehead.
I did swear shh and the hens all went silent. Feeling a bit dizzy and light headed so watching Christmas film. Had a little doze. It is lovely and cosy as the stove is lit and we had roast lamb for a late lunch at 2:15 so very light tea. I was going to make the Christmas Cake this afternoon and then go back to church for 1/2 hr prayer service as we have lost our parish status and amalgamate with other churches. We are keeping our new priest and our times except for the morning services.

Builder is coming to tile behind the Everhot tomorrow. Tiles and lockdown seem to be a connection.

Glad it is the hall and dining room. I really need to sort this area. I did do some last night. Just fifteen minutes then interrupted. Another box of books then LMS about my craft room. I did loads in there earlier this year and although it has a lot of stuff in it I had organised most of it. DH dumped stuff from his room in there so he could paint but didn’t take it or put it away and when I say dump I mean on top of other things with no concern for what is underneath. Some of it was DD I also found the bathroom bin, a towel rail and a basket full of bathroom stuff including toothpaste. Why not put it in the bloody bathroom. I had forgotten to send card to my little African child and it had to be sent by 3rd of Nov. I had some water colour pencils for her but couldn’t get to them and then couldn’t find them. I have sent some sharpies( not very good) a pencil and eraser and a scarf I bought last year because it was pretty a spare present.

MC make sure you don’t lift anything heavier than baby and make sure you get plenty of rest which will help milk production.

Tomorrow's info as I will be in a mad new school term rush in the morning!

Monday's Daily Focus is the weekly home bleugh! Some of us like to split this over a whole week. Personally I tick each thing off as and when I get the time over a week as I can't fit it all in on a Monday. (And Mondays are hard enough!)

And for the second of the month, our babystep is get dressed to shoes (which I don't do tbh but get dressed to slippers still counts right?!)

These are tomorrow's daily links www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=0&d=1 flight plan - goodness knows if that link will show today or tomorrow so hope you can see what you need 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

On that note, thought I was doing well being organised for tomorrow, got the bags sorted and by the door, sorted all of dd reading stuff , ds packed lunch. And have just discovered dd has NO clean shirts 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I don't have a tumble dryer so I've stuck them on a quick wash and will have to hang in front of the radiator and hope they aren't too damp tomorrow or she will be in a summer dress in November 😂

I'm not a good advert for flying I don't think!

Sorry haven't quite caught up with all the chat today, the kids have been hard work this weekend, a lot of whining and arguing and shouting , not sure why really. And then we had our last swimming lessons for a while.

Just wanted to say - up if it's just getting round to doing the meal plan, I tend to add meal ideas to a big list all the time when I see things I want to try or someone mentions something, also I like reading those "what's for dinner threads* on MN for ideas ...then it's just a case of taking the meals from there and I usually plan two weeks at a time and just switch them about as I feel like it. I do love looking through cook books too but that might just be me, and I'm sure my way wouldn't work for everyone!

I'm off to have some beans on toast now the kids are finally in bed 🛌

Foxes don’t worry about the link, I think the flight plan is one that changes automatically?

Sorry about all the falls and breathlessness etc!

I am feeling really despondent about the new term. Partly due to lockdown but also just because I CBA with anything anyway, and don’t really feel like yet another attempt at routine will work. Not sure whether to try it tomorrow or, given how busy the next few days are, wait until lockdown actually starts on Thursday.

I think I have just answered my own question by looking at how much needs to happen in the next few days. So many obligations to make sure everyone gets what they need physically and emotionally 😭

I am also starting to remember how much I hate Sunday evenings. I kind of wish DH had chosen another day to have his meds because it puts him out of action all day and then I feel grossly unprepared for the week, but really it would be bad whatever day.

Evening all,

Well, I've only managed 1/3 from PO3 so far, but am about to hit the other two. However here's a ta-da list.

1xLOL - put on line, nearly dry, put in the tumble dryer, tumble dryer broken. Bollocks. IT is 15 years old but that means that so far this year we have had to repair or replace WM, DW, fridge-freezer andnow this. Spent half an hour watching youtube repair vidoes and decided replace is probably the best option.

Moved laundry to inside airer which is in the way wherever we put it but will have to do for now.
Shopping collected from Sainsburys and popped in for a few forgotten bits
Shopping put away
Fridge partially cleaned as one shelf had something spilled on it.
Yesterday's LOL sorted and put away apart from ironing a few bits
Dressing table tidied and dusted, whole bood-wa dusted
De-seeded and roasted 5 pumpkins in big sections, scooped out for soup and put in fridge.
Part cooked roast dinner then left DH to it while taking DS to football
Popped into garden centre for coffee and bullet journal update during football
Bought Christmassy reed diffuser
Home again
Stripped chicken carcass and made stock (cooked and stock made in instant pot)
Answered a few emails
Watched Strictly
Checked garden shed for hedgehogs - one got locked in yesterday evening and we ended up leaving the door open (I really hope he didn't creep into the back of the tumble dryer). I heard loud scratching about this time yesterday, opened the door and turned the light on expecting it to be a cat and hedgey was just disappearing under the lawnmower and behind the shelves.

Sorry to hear about so many poorly / injured Fledglings and relatives. This is going to be a trying month I fear. I'm glad we are all here to hold each other's hands.

Mog - hope you are OK and just experiencing "thread leader rebound" as I mentioned upthread.
