Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Tinselette · 24/11/2020 06:18

Morning all. Am still painting here but almost done. Well at the moment I'm still in bed hearing the creaking of the heating. Coffee and porridge beckons.

Tinselette · 24/11/2020 06:22

Am much impressed by the baking Bower. Well done in the cake!

HauntingHazel · 24/11/2020 06:23

freaky no, I have tried it a few times, but there's something about it I don't like. None of DHs family make it. We make candied yams though, which aren't to everyone's taste, as well as the usual turkey, ham, mashed potatoes and gravy. Pumpkin pie, chocolate cream pie and my own recipe - keto butter pecan cream pie. We also can't have Thanksgiving without stuffed olives either.

It's usually all hands on deck, when I get to my ILs Thursday, I'll start on the rolls, nothing better than fresh rolls (that I really shouldn't eat). I'll start the diet again on Monday!

Stilllivinginazoo · 24/11/2020 07:14

hazel excuse my ignorance, but is Thanksgiving bigger than Xmas there?

Tinselette · 24/11/2020 07:29

zoo it's Ds's new bedroom. We're moving him to the bigger bedroom which he was originally in as a baby. But we had just redecorated and put in a new carpet five years ago when he developed asthma and we had to move him to a smaller room with a threadbare carpet. Meant to paint that room etc but never got around to it. We are having a laminate floor put in, new wardrobe doors and I'm painting it white. He likes the Seattle Seahawks so there will be grey, navy and green accents. I've a few Seahawks walk stickers and two canvases of favourite players on order as a Christmas present.

Tinselette · 24/11/2020 07:30

Oh definitely the ceiling is the worst! Actually I hate washing everything down with sugar soap and rinsing too.

Morning all. Thanks for kind words.

Couldn’t sleep till late so still in bed after finally waking up properly at 10. 😳 Really feel like staying here TBH but have done a bit on my phone as my habit tracker is going to have virtually no colour on it for the last week or so! It’s going to be a small, frequent list with pathetically tiny tasks sort of day.

ta da so far
✴️Duolingo
✴️Digital decluttering (deleted ~20 emails and ~20 photos which is my daily aim)
✴️Signed up for a meditation app (called Balance)
✴️Set reminder on my phone for next November to make sure I cancel free trial!

PO3.1
🎯get up, weigh in dress in any old thing
🎯switch dryer on
🎯breakfast, vitamins and glass of OJ to wake me up a bit

IWillWearThatGlitteryWoolly · 24/11/2020 11:00

SingToTheSky · 24/11/2020 13:00

ta da
✴️Weighed self
✴️Juice/vitamins/painkillers (decided it was too late for breakfast)
✴️Cooked healthful lunch

Had the house to myself while the others collect Cagletini, so I’ve been relaxing in front of Modern Family and eating too many biscuits. It’s sort of productive right?

SingToTheSky · 24/11/2020 13:13

Oh and
✴️Opened all upstairs windows before I came down (have now asked DS to close them all as he just got home)

PO3.2
🎯put a towel/bedding wash on
🎯do duolingo with DS and get him to do prodigy
🎯take the presents that arrived upstairs and put in appropriate drawers

HillsBesideTheSea · 24/11/2020 13:23

Morning.

The words "you are not in kindergarten, we don't tell people to get out of my way. It's rude" has been used against adults this morning.

No blood has been shed thought, can i have a good person sticker?

I am doing a massive sort out and tidy up. It looks so much worse then when I started I am tired and have the grumps. Again. Hmm

SingToTheSky · 24/11/2020 14:35

ta da
✴️Put towels and bedding in to wash
✴️Did duolingo with DS
✴️Did geometry with DS
✴️Got DS to do prodigy (am still lurking in case of difficult questions)
✴️Took delivered presents upstairs and put them in drawers

DH is predictably sleeping - he now has to take amitriptyline in the day as well as at night, as well as a new muscle relaxant. 😴😴😴 But he has done both nursery runs again while I lazed all morning so I’m hardly complaining. Hoping he will be a bit more awake later though as it’s the evenings that are most difficult. We have a fridge full of fresh food but the thought of standing up long enough to make it into a meal (let alone one the Caglets might actually eat) is feeling Frankly A Bit Much.

po3.3 (breaking things up into tiny steps is giving me the illusion of productivity!)
🎯start week 1 of my maths course on futurelearn (I’m just doing it to get some teaching/resource ideas for DS)
🎯reunite puzzle pieces with correct box and do said puzzles with Cagletini for a bit
🎯get dry washing out and start sorting the epic clean laundry pile (I’m not even aiming to finish it)

Tinselette · 24/11/2020 16:44

Oh yeah DH had to take that sing. He was even more docile than usual....

Sherin18 · 24/11/2020 17:55

Hello Sherin and Macken

TaDa
did the ironing
put on and then hung up the next lot
hoovered downstairs while H was out (getting his flu jab)
made list of Stuff To Buy for pudding and cake
emailed the Happy Puzzle Company

TaDidn't
any sewing and it's too late now (I need daylight, preferably sun)

S2 had a pre-interview exam this morning - one of the options was something about curtailment of freedoms during a pandemic Grin but he chose to what extent a jury can be of ones peers.

It's quite weird. S1 knows a lot of facts I don't but even now he's doing engineering I feel I can follow the concepts, and during his A-levels it was all stuff I'd done. S2 is delving into things I've never encountered.

We used to get a turkey from the local Kelly Bronze stockist (12 years on the trot - ahem, as it were) but the last couple of times it was significantly more expensive and starting to seem not worth it. Last year we got Tesco's special Narragansett. This year obviously we'll have to slum it with frozen.

Stilllivinginazoo · 24/11/2020 18:58

Sherin apologies.my phone is notorious for autocorrecting as I press post.ive no idea who Sherwin isBlush

Stilllivinginazoo · 24/11/2020 19:00

X post merrydd2 doing sociology and I can follow along with concepts of that despite not doing a levels.i find it all rather fascinating

Bowerbird5 · 24/11/2020 20:12

Didn’t LMS but told DH “ It’s like talking to a teenager!” DH sat after dinner, scrolling on phone ignoring my request to pass a plate out of the dresser so I can put the left over meatloaf on it. He said he would wash up so I am letting him.

Be back once I have read today’s.

SingToTheSky · 24/11/2020 20:32

Not entirely sure where the day went.
ta da
✴️Made dinner with DD1’s help
✴️Made cookies (not very good but hey they are chocolatey carbs so I don’t care)
✴️Moved laundry along
✴️Sorted some board books to donate to nursery

Sherin18 · 24/11/2020 21:07

Hi thank you everyone for welcoming me. I hope it’s okay if I start from tomorrow?. I will spend tonight sorting out a control journal, it will give me something to do because I struggle to sleep at the nights know my bump is bigger.

zoo don’t worry! I didn’t even notice you’d spelled it wrong!.
