Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Hiya everyone, shit day for me today. I’ve come on my period but had no sanitary towels on me at work so had to use some loo roll, which wasn’t very comfortable. Then went to do the grocery shop with the kids, desperately just wanted to get some sanpro and quickly pop to the loo to change but the DC both were screaming again, I ended up leaving everything and walking out and then a car came swerving really fast into the car park as DD was walking in the road, it was about an inch away from her, I keep replaying it over and over in my head and I feel sick. My DM has said she will have the DC tomorrow after nursery so I can get groceries etc. I’m sooo ready for bed. I haven’t done any flying today really so I won’t post a ta da list.

I’m going to start off by saying I’m VERY jealous of everyone’s snow!

dancing sorry about the dog poo, it sounds like a really stressful morning!. And thank you for the love for the tree, it is cosy but nothing like the massive trees you see these days.

up it is great seeing the decs isn’t it, there’s quite a lot up by me now!. Sorry about the car, it seems like a lot of us have gave up on adulting.

Thank you glittery that’s so kind of you. It really has lifted our moods.

hills I think I’m going to put some lights on the front of the house. I just think fairy lights make everything much happier.

mc I think I might do some reindeer handprint pictures and get him a little outfit. I’m sure your little one will look lovely in his outfit. And thank you! I hope you enjoy decorating.

that I’m sorry you’re feeling so overwhelmed💐

DD has come into my bed, I’m going to try and get an early (even thought it’s almost midnight) night.

SingToTheSky · 19/11/2020 23:56

Sorry about the hypo dancing

Woolly is that the stretchy sofa cover that’s meant to magically fit any sofa? I’ve seen the ads on FB and they look tempting but perhaps too good to be true :(

I am pleased to announce that for the first time all month I HAVE CAUGHT UP WITH THE THREAD!!! Yes, this means sleep did not happen. I was basically dozing off on the sofa 3 hours ago but actual sleep in bed is elusive. At least I’ve been lying down I suppose.

Tomorrow’s plan... erm well I have to sort out getting some things in the morning (online and in person) I need to study and write up my therapy session as well as going to the meet up. All with period pain. Yay. 😂

SingToTheSky · 19/11/2020 23:59

Xpost flushi that must have been horrible, I hate near misses that stay with you 😢

Right. Sleep. X

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 00:07

Flushii try not to think about the road incident. DS and I were nearly mashed in Manchester outside the John Rylands Library when someone ran the red light at the pedestrian crossing. We are extra careful now at crossings. Glad DD is okay. Tomorrow is another day...

HauntingHazel · 20/11/2020 00:09

Flushi your tree looks beautiful! The other day I watched Christmas inheritance, holiday calendar and another one that I can't remember! Last night we watched bad moms Christmas, which was hilarious.
bower I usually make my truffles for gifts and try to sell some for a little extra money. I'll have to put a post on Facebook, but I'll have to remember to check it 🤦‍♀️
Sorry there aren't any more personals right now, I'll have to reread the latest on the thread.

Yesterday I vacuumed my ILs house and went to the store to pick up a couple essentials after work. DD cooked a delicious dinner for us all which was a surprise and very much needed break.

Today at work I've been sorting out paperwork, I've really enjoyed doing that today and knows there's a lot more. I'll get to do more of that tomorrow as well. I'll have to do some dusting in there as well - it's so bad!

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 00:10

Second coat on the radiator tomorrow, plus polyfilla cracks and tape up skirtings etc. Work tomorrow so big paint on Saturday. No flying done really due to ongoing DIY. Stuff all over the place 😁

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 00:12

That 💐💐🍷

MrsTidyHouse · 20/11/2020 05:15

It must be the weather. Every bit of me is tired, and I just want to curl up and sleep.

Packed up more books, cleared some rubbish out of the garage.

Tidied the brushes and buckets at the back door, found a pair of school trousers at the bottom of one bucket. No idea how they got there.

Very glad I batch-cooked a vat of soup and stock earlier this weeek, as it has made mealtimes so much easier. Freeze some stock tomorrow.

Realised at bedtime that LB had no school trousers. Hand-washed the pair I had found earlier in the garden bucket, put them through spin cycle then hung them over radiator. Will get up early to tumble dry.

Looked in on sleeping children. LB sleeping on LG's floor again. He takes his bedding through and makes a nest under the dressing-table. He is so anxious, stress appearing on his face almost all the time now, something that I hadn't seen for a couple of years until this school year. It's been so hard on him. We might just take Monday off.

Stilllivinginazoo · 20/11/2020 06:22

SingI join AF club yesterday.flooding in progress, started mid pm....interesting a number of us are sync up for cycles

Was it flushi he as near miss in carpark?when dd1 was little we were missed literally by mm when car ran a red light

After so much funk yesterday I'm starting today like the good fairy sprinkling positivityover us all!

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 20/11/2020 06:25

Thank you for the kind words

I think i have too many plates spinning and something needs to go

foxessocks · 20/11/2020 06:42

that we're all here for you 💐
Flushi that's so nerve-wracking. Thank goodness your mum can watch DC tomorrow for you. Sounds like you need a few minutes/ hours to yourself.
Sing enjoy your meet up tomorrow.
zoo I love my low dose birth control pill for that reason. My periods are almost non existent now when they used to be so heavy. That is interesting re syncing, even online it seems!
tidy sorry to hear about your DS stressing out. How old is he again? Is good that it seems he has a 'safe space' he feels comfortable in to sleep though.
freaky we have lots of diy to get done here too, it's just not getting done any time soon. They're all fairly little jobs, but keep getting put off.

I do have a couple ta das:
🎅 Cleaned the bathroom (I smelled pee in there when I got home from work)
🤶 Dropped DD off at work
🎅 Got truffles at aside for mums package for Christmas - I'm very worried she won't get it in time, but I can send it tomorrow
🤶 Wrote out Christmas cards for family to get sent. Added DC pictures from school.
🎅 Got my clothes and jewellery out for tomorrow for work
🤶 DW filled, DH started it

I'm now ready for bed. I need to join the naughty corner too, it sounds very cosy and I'm freezing here. We have no snow anymore, I'm ready for more.
🍒👋

All caught up
Flushii hope you're ok after the carpark incident, stuff like that is horrible 😞

I have a sofa cover, we got ours from eBay for about £12 I think, I love it. But maybe we were just lucky with the fit being right. It is a pain to get it on and the foam bits ping out of the sides sometimes (and then the dc use them for sword fighting Hmm) but overall I'm pleased with it. Did the one you get not fit glittery?

Sorry to hear everyone in a bit of a slump at the moment, hopefully we'll all come out the other side soon. I just had one of those days yesterday I was feeling grumpy and snapping a lot, work was so busy and I had a bit of an awkward situation with a friend asking a favour which I had to say no to.

Onwards and upwards though!

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 07:48

mrstidy I think we've all been there with school uniform washing. My heart just sinks the night before if I realise we don't have the full uniform!

That I'm taking vitamins at the moment, particularly B vits and vit D and it's making such a difference. Take time even just a few minutes to regroup each day.

Zoo you're such a good fairy. Do channel Nanny Plum!

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 07:58

Foxes wipe down door handles and light switches will please the Chief Medical Officer no end!

Dancing I'm so sorry to read that you struggle with your health. The doctor told me that exercise is brilliant for blood pressure. I'm trying to build more daily exercise in.

Hazel we are really tackling DIY now because we've left it for so long that the list is mounting up. We are organising work for outside the house for new year and minimal inside stuff for workmen just now. So I'm doing the painting indoors. To be honest Ds"s room is long overdue. He was in a larger bedroom which we did up and installed a carpet in. Then he immediately developed asthma, reacting to the carpet. I moved him to a smaller room with a threadbare carpet and he's been there for years. It's really shabby. The original room is showing signs of wear particularly the carpet and he's getting bigger so we've decided to redecorate it and add laminate flooring. He's so excited, bless.

Dancingtomusic · 20/11/2020 09:17

Sorry xposts

Morning Foxes🖐

Hazel- love the santa emojis

Freaky- i am going to take my vit D tablets now...awww lovely you are doing D's room up. I bet he will love it! What colours have you decided?

foxessocks · 20/11/2020 12:11

freaky yes flylady talks of approaching flu season...Shock

Ta das
School run
Went to do some returns / pick up parcels
Played with ds - this morning he chose a balance game, a make yourself dizzy game and then a game with a unicorn and a dog (I had to be the dog) lots of fun 😂
Persuaded ds to stop the game so we could have an early lunch before we collect dd
Made cheese sandwiches for ds and beans on toast for me
Dishwasher on
Washing hung up
Emptied all the bins
Whilst playing with ds in dd bedroom I decluttered two of her toy boxes without him noticing that I was tidying 😂 only got rid of a pair of ballet slippers that are too small but I did sort all the hair clips and the toy money into two little purses that she has. So that's something I guess!

School run in ten minutes and then I'm kind of hoping the dc don't want to go to the park because it's very cold out there today ❄️

foxessocks · 20/11/2020 12:13

I've also been taking vitamin D for a while now, I think it's important especially with the gloomy weather right now!

I wrote a long post this morning but apparently it got eaten. Sad

Yes to taking vit d. i am supposed to but have been forgetting a lot recently.

Another bonkers days here.

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 13:37

There's nothing more annoying than losing a long post Hills. Dancing it's a front bedroom and quite sunny so I'm just going to repaint it white. However ds is a Seattle seahawks fan ( American football). Their colourway is navy, grey, white and bright green. He has a grey lamp so I'm going with a navy lampshade. At least with white walls I can change up the bedclothes as I wish. I've ordered two canvases of his favourite players for Christmas so he'll have them on one wall and it will look really cool. Due to his asthma I've gone for Howdens chestnut oak laminate which is a rich dark colour. Normally I'm not a fan of brilliant white walls but there's no 'cutting in' to carefully paint close to ceilings with a different colour. I'm also replacing an ancient heavy mirrored sliding wardrobe door system as the rollers are old and I'm worried the whole thing will land on him. I'm going for a white shaker style sliding door. We don't have curtains to avoid dust. Currently it's my office so he'll be moving to a much bigger room. I get his scrappy room but I don't mind!

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 13:40

Foxes yes it's bracing today. I'm considering going out for a second walk. Have finished radiator.

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/11/2020 14:32

@FreakyForestier have the NFL manage to get a season in? I lost track this year. Although it'll be a weird year if there is no super bowl.

foxessocks · 20/11/2020 15:36

Sounds a very cool room freaky!
Hills I hate it when a long post gets lost Angry

Ta das this afternoon
Picked up dd from school
Made sure I only allowed myself a five minute sit down when I got back or that would have been it for the day!!
Made veggie lasagne ready for dinner tonight
Tidied kitchen afterwards
Hung more washing up
10 X minutes pilates

Stopped to read my book and have a cup of tea. Dh finishes early on a Friday so he's now playing super Mario with the kids. We've got flu jabs first thing in the morning and I'm conscious that we will probably feel pretty ropey afterwards so it would be good if I was on top of the housework today 🤔 but it's Friday so I'm obviously on wind down mode 🤣
