Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 17:05

I'll check with the expert Hills and get back to you! But I think they have managed to play. 😁🏈

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 17:07

zoo that's all that really needs to happen - everyone fed, no-one dead

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/11/2020 18:42

Gold star standard there Zoo everyone fed no one dead is the most important thing!

Ds is cooking his own tea. I have winter veg soup in the slow cooker and it smells amazing. Just going to finish some part bake rolls to go with.

Urm? Did something but no idea what. Was looking for a picture that appears to have gone missing. But can't find that either. I need to do something productive but it is cold and I dont want to.

Naughty corner is open for being cosy!

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 18:59

NFL is continuing with social distancing in stadia. Superbowl is going ahead. Full on season but no pre-season games. Some matches were delayed. So dust down your chilli recipes for end of January 2021.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 20/11/2020 20:03

Evening all,

Well, today has been more productive than yesterday. I had zoom yoga this morning, which I do in what we call the middle room (terraced house, the stairs are in it and the kitchen behind it, we use it as a home office / 2nd living room). It is also a major dumping ground. So I spend half the session looking at stuff on shelves and the desk and thinking "if I moved that there, chucked that out, got a box for that...). Last week this resulted in a good clean and tidy of the hearth and mantelpiece, this week I turned my hand to the desk and shelves. Not a total blitz, but started. There was a huge box of CDs which fell into the "chuck out" category, but most aren't mine. So I sorted them into piles by owner, chucked out a load of trashed nursery rhyme etc ones and have given everyone their own pile to put somewhere else or chuck. My pile (about 10) - I am going to go through and see what's on Spotify, anything that isn't I will check that we have put it on our ITunes music stash and then chuck out or put in the loft

Also cleaned the bathroom, did the kitchen, 2 x LOL, picked DS up from school, cooked dinner. Now just killing time in the kitchen as DS is doing zoom land training for swimming club in the front room.

Dancing - I'm sorry to hear about your blood sugar problems, that does sound really hard. DH has had diabetes for 30 years now, before I met him, and is pretty OK, his control is generally very good, although we have had the odd moment.

Hazel - your truffles look amazing, really professional.

Flushi - nice to see your tree. We usually get a real one so can't do it yet, but I am planning to put fairylights in the front garden over the weekend. Sorry to hear about the near miss with the car, so awful. My car is a hybrid and it's almost completely silent at low speeds such as in car parks so I have to be super-careful around pedestrians.

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/11/2020 20:11

I have a tradition of watching until after the half time show which requires Cheese and herb scones and internets stuff.
Now the Stanley cup... that requires full attention, fresh hot bread and running commentary with friends. That gets watched in full ;)

Thank you for asking the expert freaky

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 20:36

I have watched the Bruins versus Pittsburgh Penguins in Boston at the TD Garden. I had no idea what was going on. It was fast. 🙂

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 20:37

You're making me hungry Hills

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 20:39

The NFL Seahawk fan is also a Bruins fan.

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/11/2020 21:40

Ah excellent. Also Bruins fan, but not picky hockey is hockey yes i know blasphemy. Hockey is easier to understand when you start with kid hockey. NHL is faster than elite league which is the UK top flight hockey. In live person NHL must be an interesting experience. It is on my list to experience at some point.

Bowerbird5 · 20/11/2020 22:01

Wow! I finally caught up with the thread.

Sorry I haven’t been here much. Builders were unexpectedly back here as rained off building the house elsewhere.i was still in bed 🤣 as DH had got up about half an hour earlier and made me a mug of tea.

Some plaster and some plaster board up on ceiling.
Luckily I hadn’t got up because I had planned to move stuff from room of doom into hall so I could access card stuff and Christmas jigsaws.
Likewise not much flying here. Kitchen is clean and tidy. Reading FB page of Everhot owners for more inspiration. Doing orange slices with cloves etc. I might do some next week they put temp.on and times.

Vacuum downstairs. S& S.

Flushi what a scare.
Lovely tree.

Dancing hope you feel better soon.

Zoo sounds like some daft and inappropriate questions.

Freaky brrr chilly up there. Closing the border here, all over local news. It has been wet and cold here today.

Looks a good list ED
Hills soup mmm yummy. I bought some chicken breasts to make some. Must do that in the morning.

Sorry I can’t remember the rest.

The Gingerbread was cake. Mary Berry’s recipe. It is going down well
With DD—the builder and his mate. They liked the biscuits too.

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 22:02

I wish it had been you not me Hills - a wasted experience on me. Good fun though and the food in the stadium was good. We have a souvenir puck and one of those little towels that they all wave. I wanted to go to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts but got overruled

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/11/2020 22:07

Things we do for our family freaky Grin

The soup was amazing. I had grown some puney carrots and parsnips and they were thrown into it. They might have been small but they were sure tasty!

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 22:09

The American family weighed in so I was outnumbered. You don't mess with hockey fans 😁

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/11/2020 22:35

This is true but hockey family is amazing. A prime example is how they came together for the humbolt kids. It was nice to see that another survivor was able to return to the ice recently.

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 22:41

I've just looked it up Hills . What an awful crash 😔

FreakyForestier · 20/11/2020 22:46

Glad your builders are back Bower

HillsBesideTheSea · 20/11/2020 22:48

Yeah. It was interesting to see that Uk teams took moments of silence, that there were messages of support etc. Truly horrific situation but the whole hockey world rallied round. Made be proud to support the sport.

I also love the NHL 3rd goalie rule. Which means you can get a building manager etc end up in a top flight game if both goalies go down. There has been some really interesting 3rd goalie situations. Some of them have had real corkers of games, playing their socks off and making the most of a once in a life time opportunity.

Erm.... I collected the laundry for washing tomo?

Hiya all, I’ve had such a nice day. My mom took the kids and has had them overnight!. This is my first night without DS ever and my first night without kids for over a year. I’ve not done any house work, I’ll do it all in the morning before the kids come home. I’ve just watched some films and had a few glasses of wine, I was even able to stay in the bath for half an hour. I feel much better and out of my funk.

Thank you everyone for your kind words about DD, it’s terrifying isn’t it!. I’m sorry so many of you have been through the same thing, I feel so guilty looking back, I should’ve been holding her hand but she let go and was walking and I couldn’t see any cars so I thought it was fine. I’m just glad she’s safe.

hazel I’ll have to give some of them Christmas films a go, I have seen a couple of them.

I’m sorry your DS is so stressed tidy

zoo everyone fed and no one dead is how I get through life.

ED this car just came out of nowhere it was awful, the person didn’t even apologise. Your fairy lights sound lovely. Good going on cleaning the middle room, I live in a terrace house and your middle room is my living room. I’m not sure what I’ll do with the front room after it’s a playroom.

Right I’m off to bed now, I’ve just finished bingeing the crown. I’m going to have a good nights sleep and I’m picking the kids up midday so I might even be able to sleep until 10!. Sorry for no list.

Dancingtomusic · 21/11/2020 04:32

Ed- my god you have done so much in your house, weldone.

Sing- i hope you get to rest this weekend.

Freaky- the idea for your sons room sound wonderful. I love the idea and colours based on hockey. I too like keeping the walls plain...i have cream walls and i invested in huge picture frames for my ds room. Then i can change it when his interests change too.

Hills- ahh lovely you sound like you enjoy watching sports, is it mainly hockey?

Ta das...
Decluttered more of kitchen corner.
Wiped up gas cooker top
Cooked 3 dishes.
Fed kids. One enjoyed the food the other didnt.
Tears from kids as they were fighting over a pencil.
Tried to cook and sort out the kids in the other room.
Put all the dark school clothes in the wash before bed so its currently sopping wet in the washing machine.
Got the kids up to bed before 7pm as i couldnt keep my eyes open.
Back to bed for me...night/morning whenever you see this or which time zone you live in.

MrsTidyHouse · 21/11/2020 06:06

Vast majority of DS's books are now at his flat. I've kept a few that he thinks I might enjoy.

Today is for lots of cooking soup to try to warm up the kitchen and use up elderly veg. Also freezing some stock for holiday soup.

Bring in a couple of table lamps from shed. We need new heavy duty stepladders for changing lghtbulbs, and lamps will give a warm.er feeling until then. Add lightbulbs to shopping list. Have ordered static battery LED fairy lights for gloomy corners.

Make sure there's uniform for Monday.

Gather and sort laundry.
Put away clean stuff.

Tidy back door and utility.

If weather permits, bring in from shed anything that might be damaged by damp or cold or mice eg leather workboots, waterproofs, etc.

First, find a good podcast.

Stilllivinginazoo · 21/11/2020 06:49
