Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Are you OK That? You can always talk to us on here regardless of any lack of lists.

I haven't kept up with the thread, planning to read through later.

Dancingtomusic · 19/11/2020 11:37

Oh That! Sending you a massive hug! Are you ok?
Passing you a Gin

SingToTheSky · 19/11/2020 11:46

Not played it myself zoo but have heard good things! Actually that might be a good option for Xmas 🥑🔨

Therapy done, the boys of the house are back and getting on with earthquake statistics :o and I’m faffing about while half writing notes on my session in order to write it up properly later. It was good actually, it always takes me longer to warm up over zoom but it was a useful session talking about assertiveness and guilt etc. This also included talking about the chaos at home and she was saying how she sometimes has to shove everything in a box for later eg to clear the table... I resisted the temptation to get all excited and say “flylady calls that a stash and dash” 😂😳

Right must go and finish my notes and also need to find the rest of the laminator sheets!

THATbasicSNOWFLAKE · 19/11/2020 11:52

Thanks all

I'm feeling pretty shit. I always seem to be exhausted and run down. Everything is getting on top of me Sad

SingToTheSky · 19/11/2020 12:03

Aw that! :( I posted without reading back, I’m sorry things are so tough. Do you want to talk it out on here? Xx

foxessocks · 19/11/2020 12:37

I'm not surprised That, you have a lot on your plate at the best of times and Covid takes things to a whole new level. If there's anything we can help with, even if it's just making space in the naughty corner, perhaps with some healthy but delicious snacks, then that's what we're here for.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 19/11/2020 12:44

In fact I'm about to put the kettle on, I have finished work for today, anyone fancy a cuppa?

ExpensivelyDecorated · 19/11/2020 14:53

and handgel

Sorry, got distracted and wandered off. It has turned very cold here so I think I will join the fluffy blanket corner.

foxessocks · 19/11/2020 17:39

What a day. I'm going to join you all in the fluffy blanket corner if that's ok.

I think at this point it is to be advised Foxes

It has started to freeze outside.
I have just lost it over the issue of tea, what to feed, people not eating at meal times, and the fact that we don't currently have a working cooker. I am clearly over tired and as such sending myself to bed early.

Stilllivinginazoo · 19/11/2020 20:07

Big row with dd2 because I dared ask what wanted for dinner....

merryhouse · 19/11/2020 20:11

Ach, I'm just coming out of the funk and you're all talking about sliding into it.

{ion. I do not need external validation. I do not need external validation. I do n}

Sort of cleaned bathroom and downstairs loo
Hoovered upstairs yesterday and downstairs today
Did lots of ironing and then loads more washing
Found a recipe for baked fake-KFC and bought the stuff we don't have
Tried the pull-up bar (result woeful: can hang from it but that's all)
Did it again even though it's woeful (apparently it's good for my back)
Have not eaten any of the remaining butter tablet
Went to bed before 11pm last night
Changed sheets on bed

Didn't put out recycling. Didn't do any missions. Didn't email the Happy Puzzle Company ffs. Didn't look at my Christmas list.

(Most of Mumsnettiquette is total bollocks, tbf)

Ooh, H is around Norfolk at that point. Possibly the Flemings (there is still debate over the origins of his mother's surname). Isn't there some famous tudor-era person from there (or am I conflating Walsham and Walsingham)?

Two vaccines! only a few weeks to the turning of the year! lowest common denominator! and today I bought buttermilk!

TheUpholder · 19/11/2020 20:53

Room in the naughty corner for another one in a funk?

Booked someone to look at my car at the weekend. Briefly felt on top of things. Extractor fan broke. No longer on top of things.

Well done for dragging yourself out Merry. Can you let us all wallow tonight and then prod us with the pointy stick tomorrow please?

That Flowers

I need to put the leftovers in the fridge and do something with the kitchen. Urgh.

I was coming out of the current funk (TBH with me it is a pretty regular occurrence 😂) and have been a bit more motivated the last few days but am not quite there thanks to AF arriving, I’m insanely sleepy and going to bed!

Got another home ed meet tomorrow, not necessarily planning to go twice every week but there are some people I really can’t wait to see who couldn’t go yesterday! Hopefully I’ll feel a bit more energetic.

Dancingtomusic · 19/11/2020 21:31

Is there a firepit in the naughty corner, I will sit there with a duvet. I have got lots of duvets to share and I would love a hot water bottle please.

Did online course yay. Bike ride + not eating properly= hypo= 4 hours unable to do much as legs went to jelly and shaking. This is because I have been terrible with my food choices. Dh took kids to park as I was ill.
Managed to clear a small space on the counter near the sink.
Washed and dried my bedding.
Showered and dressed kids.
Small steps

Cherry waves to everyone

ExpensivelyDecorated · 19/11/2020 23:01

I'm in bed with a hot water bottle and a glass of red wine. I spent most of the day (till about an hour ago) on the computer, work this morning then lots of odd jobs, Christmas shopping and a zoom presentation, which was interesting. Tired now. I did also manage 2 x LOL dried on the line, which is rate at this time of year.

Dancing do you have diabetes? DH has type 1 and that sort of thing happens to him occasionally.

I can hardly keep my eyes open, see you all tomorrow ❤️
