Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Tired but happy! Just got back from a home ed meet up (allowed under current regs, in line with schools being open this time). So so lovely. Was actually quite a big step for me even without the long break due to covid - I’ve not been to this more open sort of group in a few years (I stuck to specific trips/workshops/classes) after some issues with a home ed bully (AKA psycho mother and evil daughter) that really knocked my confidence for a while. So it was absolutely brilliant to be back and talking to new people again and NOT feeling paranoid. Yay!

Glad I did a little bit of decluttering, a LOL and cleaned the shower screen this morning as I don’t think I’ll get much done this afternoon now. However lovely it is, Peopling is tiring 😂 and it’s got cold and dark very quickly which just makes me feel yuck.

Aww dancing thanks re home ed :) we’ve definitely hit our stride thanks to lockdown #1, but TBH he has turned into a very easy to educate child for the most part (if you don’t think too much about handwriting and English anyway 😂) and that’s mostly good luck I think, DD1 is the opposite!

Mc I did ask DS and he’s quite up for the idea. He is now mature enough to get enough done so it’s not all left for later in the week I think (again, opposite to DD1 😳) and he seemed to appreciate the idea of being able to do all his chemistry at once and so on 😂 but really, he’s very easy going and goes with the flow.

I’m curled up under a duvet 🥶🥶🥶

SingToTheSky · 18/11/2020 16:29

Aw woolly :( hugs, and lots of gluten free goodies for you with a warm blanket in the naughty corner 💕

SingToTheSky · 18/11/2020 16:30

And I LOVE the idea of a Chrismask! 🎄😷

merryhouse · 18/11/2020 16:45

The house in the corner has coloured lights up which is all very festive, and next door has announced they're doing their now-annual mulled wine party (they've been here since 2018 Grin) over Zoom next week.

I have bought some Christmas presents (gah, need to email company and tell them they've sent the wrong thing - complicated by the fact that it's gone to MiL's house because that's much closer to recipient).

and I've participated in a Favourite Christmas Songs thread. Anyone would think it was Advent.

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/11/2020 18:50

wooly that's utterly shite.id come eat cheese with you for two weeks and let them crack on with BBQ in a bloody field on their ownFlowerssorry DC are finding everything overwhelming.we started Hannibal as a diversion but dd2 anxiety couldn't cope and moved onto the reckoning....

FlushiTheSnowman · 18/11/2020 19:46

Hiya everyone! I forgot yesterday’s ta da’s so I’ll post them and today’s, the only things I have to do today that I haven’t put on my list is the kids nighttime routine and my own. But I’ve done everything else I need to do. I’m so tired today, night sweats are a side effect of my new medication and it kept me up all last night, but I’m cracking on. We did put the tree up, I have attached a pic, it isn’t very impressive, and at a funny angle because I had to crop our family pics.

hills that’s why we’ve done it, it’s made us feel a lot more cosy and just lifted the mood a bit. The doctors appointment sounds like a real faff!

bower thankfully DS is too young to get too excited, and DD has been excited for about a month now😂. I hope you enjoyed your cookies!

hazel I usually do it a bit later, around about December time. But this year I just couldn’t wait any longer!. What movies did you watch?

Ours is plastic too mc, my dad gets a real one but he’s been struggling to find them this year!. Are you looking forward to your first Christmas with your little one? It will be DS’s first Christmas this year too!

Sorry you’ve had such a difficult start to the day zoo

I’m sorry everything’s quite tough today glittery I hope you managed to get some rest!.

I’m glad the meet-up went well sing!

Zoo- sending you lots of cake...lots of cake and a hug. With a pot of tea. That stays at the perfect tea drinking temperature.

Wooly- sending you virtual wine. I will join you. I love your phrase....i would like to be a few units away from the real world.

Mc- hope you are snuggling babyMc and get extra snuggles.

Hills- i am glad you made a docs appt. I dread to think how would ever get a appt at my surgery.

Sing- lovely to hear you enjoyed your teaching session so much! Yay to kind and friendly people.

Foxes- How did you manage to do so much in one day?

Merry- its lovely to hear Christmas cheer is starting up.

I am currently feeling better thank you as I did alittle bit of organising and tidying in the kitchen.
Today I started with a early wake up with the kids to try and get them to school on time. I found fraggles 2 P.e trousers in the wash basket....ffs.
On way to school...looks like we might just make it on time....fraggle 2 steps in dog poo.
Had to walk back home and change her shoes.
You can imagine how much swearing I was doing in my head...without making too much of an issue of it with my little ones.

After dropping the fraggles to school and apologising for being late.
I got home and I honestly felt like ripping all the teddies and dolls heads off in anger. (I did not do this.)
I am overwhelmed. Possible pms.

This is not like me. But I feel like I cant win. Kids wake up late...we are late to school. Kids wake up early...we are still late to school.
Did my last Maths online course...phew...cos I can't handle my house looking like this much longer.

Went for a bike ride in the local park and reset my mood into positive. Its the house and the state its in that is really effecting me. So I just need to focus and keep chipping away.
Thank you for your kind words everyone. Its really helps.

Big cherry wave to everyone.

Dancingtomusic · 18/11/2020 20:11

Flushi- your christmas looks lovely! 🎄🎄🎄🎁🎁🎄🎄🎀 It makes me feel all Christmasy. Love your photo.

TheUpholder · 18/11/2020 20:48

I get overwhelmed when the house is in a state too Dancing. I got really snappy with DH the other day as everything felt chaotic. Just take a deep breath and do a little bit at a time.

Lovely tree Flushi. I’ll wait until December for ours but I’m enjoying seeing the lights etc that others have done.

There’s mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies in the naughty corner for all those of you with DC worries/feeling meh/in pain.

Foxes I am most impressed with your list today.

I’ve kept up with the basics but had 2 frustrating days at work and I think I might give up adulting for the rest of the week. The final straw was the appearance of the oil light on my car, despite me checking it when it appeared yesterday and it being more than half full. So that’ll be a trip to the garage at some point Hmm

I know I had more personals but they seem to have disappeared along with my will to be an adult so 🍒 👋 to all.

Oh it was more activities based rather than actual “learning” dancing - sadly group “proper lessons” are really hard to come by round here. Wish I had the confidence to set something up. But anyway, it was great fun and nice to chat to people.

ta da
🥰bit of HE
🥰looked up info about Boots order
🥰cleaned shower screen and tiles
🥰shower, moisturise
🥰LOL
🥰quick tidy on landing
🥰quick declutter in our room
🥰HE meet
🥰quick chat with work coach
🥰reading
🥰gathered some books to pack away in the living room (stuff that Cagletini can use when she’s older but is too young for DS)
🥰bathed Cagletini
🥰duolingo
🥰brain training apps
🥰started making DS some Italian word cards (mainly verbs to conjugate)

Just watching some masterchef professionals with DD1.

Tomorrow I need to:
🎯phone Boots as the second half of my order never showed up
🎯print, laminate and cut the itslian cards
🎯read my journals and then have my therapy session, and write it up after

Feel like there’s loads of other stuff but oh well.

SingToTheSky · 18/11/2020 22:57

Oh yeah and also
🥰cut DD1’s hair
🥰decided on two new things to try this week and adapted tesco order to suit (or rather, named ingredients while DH added them)

Going to try pineapple upside down cake and pulled pork 😀

Masterchef is making me hungry and I wish I’d ordered mackerel. 😫

SingToTheSky · 18/11/2020 23:03

And we have been Proper Grown Ups 🤣 and ordered a shoe rack! Measured up and we can fit two (they stack) so should be about right for us. Yay!

HillsBesideTheSea · 18/11/2020 23:32

flushi your tree looks amazing. You reminded me we have coloured fairy lights around the kitchen window. They are not Christmas lights those are our bring a little happy lights. I might need to put them on tomo.

Dancing
This is not like me. But I feel like I cant win. Kids wake up late...we are late to school. Kids wake up early...we are still late to school. This is common. So common in fact that even when I don't have ds I still end up doing this. It is not that you can't win. It is the law of Sod.

Woolly I'd not be impressed with a BBQ in a field either. Hope that you are able to talk some sense and prevent that horror.

MerryHouse hope that you are able to sort the present issue out without too much trouble.

Yay for getting list done foxes

Sorry i started this post hours and hours ago. Too tired to catch up/correct/add

This week can do one. I'm done. Although did get doc appointment for next week after phone appointment today. Teen is still sulking at me. He'll live. Now for tomorrow's online stuff to go without a hitch that would be great...

Mc3209 · 19/11/2020 00:21

Hills well done on getting that GP appointment, it's usually a mission.
Bower that's an excellent idea re bauble, thank you! I am planning on getting McTiny his first trainset this Christmas (even if he won't be able to play with it for a good while yet 😂).
Flushi are you doing anything special to mark first Christmas for DS? I found cute Santa outfit on JoJo maman Bebe, can't wait to dress up McTiny 😬 love your tree, very festive. We will be putting ours up this Sunday, but I will start decorating the rest of the house tomorrow.
Woolly I hope your lavender bath has had its restorative power. Sounds like you had a tough day.
Dancing oh I love those newborn cuddles, they are the best!

Ta da for today:
🎉 Bathroom blitzed - so the missions of sink and tub are done and dusted.
🎉Lol X2
🎉Watered indoor plants
🎉Went for a walk.

I started to calorie count, and so far it's working well. I don't like doing it, but it's necessary pain. Not sure how that's going to work..

FreakyForestier · 19/11/2020 08:01

Have you looked out the window yet this morning MC? 🌨️🌨️

Stilllivinginazoo · 19/11/2020 08:29

You have snow freaky

FreakyForestier · 19/11/2020 08:30

Yes indeedy zoo but tis not sticking.

Dancingtomusic · 19/11/2020 08:45

Hiya Up 🖐

I warned Dh yest that i am a woman on the edge...and if one more dunker tells me they dont want to eat what i have cooked....i will Lms - does he want Jacket potato or not because i am closing the kitchen. I cant take the kitchen being messed up all the time. (DH doesnt eat with me a kids, he eats or cooks whenever he wants. I dont mind, i only ask for a tidy kitchen at the end of the day.)

Snow? Where...i love watching snow.

Managed to get kids to school just in time.

Yay...now online course. Need to remember how to write evaluations and spell.

Feeling positive...think the early nights are helping me and the kids.

Washed lots of storage tubs for the kitchen cabinets so hopefully i can tidy more things away.

SingToTheSky · 19/11/2020 09:07

Morning lovely people. I have got DS set up doing some work and then they’re getting a click and collect order while I have therapy on zoom. I’m feeling like I’m wading through treacle this morning so I’m kind of regretting booking it as I don’t feel very motivated! But obviously too late to rearrange. 💸💸💸

So PO3.1
❗️Weigh in, shower, dressed
❗️Meds and a big glass of water with breakfast
❗️Read my journals from last session and after (won’t take long as I barely write since lockdown)

That’ll definitely be the sum of my achievements this morning!

Mc3209 · 19/11/2020 09:43

Freaky yes, first snow of the season! I was very excited 😁 I take it as an official go ahead for Christmas decorations to be put up!
Dancing best of luck with online courses. Spelling is one step ahead of me, autocorrect is my best friend at the moment.
Sing I hope that treacle feeling lifts for you.
