Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Today's mission has been accomplished (not much else has so far but I'll take it as a small win!)
See also - my new office chair (not yet got a desk for it to go with but never mind at least I'll be more comfortable tomorrow!)

Oh why bower?! Did I miss something about the nuts?! 😂

Right 20 minutes more dashing around before I need to leave...

SingToTheSky · 04/11/2020 16:53

Ooh nice chair! Looks comfy :)

I haven’t really managed the chill part of my power of three, although I did manage to eat a bit chocolate. :o But it’s the part of the day where it’s hard to disappear upstairs especially as we are really trying to keep Cagletini awake until a reasonable bedtime so she doesn’t nap late. She’s so tired from going back to nursery this week! Hopefully she will sleep at a decent time and then we can get everything else sorted.

Stilllivinginazoo · 04/11/2020 18:28

Someones letting off loud bangers setting D's off and half dogs in neighbourhood are barking....

Lisette1940 · 04/11/2020 18:57

Foxes it's like something from Star Trek 😍😍😍

foxessocks · 04/11/2020 19:16

sing hope bedtime goes well!

Zoo really loud fireworks here too, thankfully my two aren't scared but it is keeping ds awake and dd is cross saying they're too loud and we should make them stop, if only! Making me jump every time they go off! Hope it stops soon for you Sad

Lisette it is isn't it, I love it! I'm actually quite looking forward to work tomorrow with my new chair

Not quite so happy about my new work phone though which now means more people know how to get hold of me 😂

My ta das for the rest of the day
Cleaned dining table
Emptied bins
Dh has dusted downstairs and hoovered downstairs
All the laundry put away
More washing put on which I still need to hang up 🤦‍♀️
Very quick HIIT workout
School run
Cooked dinner (which ds didn't eat again Sad) dd also had a huge strop and even me and dh fell out over it all - not the best dinner time even by our recent low standards on that front!
Had some fun family time after dinner singing and dancing to kids songs
Cleaned veg drawer in fridge
Washing up
Put kids to bed
Sort out dd bag with things she needs to take to school tomorrow
Ds packed lunch for tomorrow

And deal with 100000000000 further requests from the kids after they are in bed Hmm

foxessocks · 04/11/2020 19:25

Links for tomorrow
flight plan
Thursday is errand day (although I guess that's limited in lockdown 2.0!)
Mission is to dust your ceilings, light fixtures and windowsills in the dining room and entrance way

In the KCC I thought as menu planning is habit of the month I'd share the occasional recipe, tonight's dinner was this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/baked-fish-tomatoes-basil-crispy-crumbs which I thought was delicious and healthy, with nice soft bread. (Please note my children didn't agree but don't listen to them 🤣!!)

I try and do two seafood meals a week, often something with tinned tuna as I find that more cost effective, but we also like cod, salmon, those fish pie mix packs you can get, prawns...we love mussels too but hardly ever have them.

Do you all eat seafood and have any good recipes to share or ideas to share? Smile

Ooh lovely KCC idea I really need inspiration. DH and I were just talking about this, as I’ve moaned about several times on here 😳 the caglets are fussy buggers so we don’t eat much varied food 🤬 but I’ve realised recently there’s not even any benefit to having such a limited menu because half the time they still don’t eat it 🤦‍♀️ so we are going to cook more to our taste, make sure there is at least one thing they do eat on the plate, and then making sure they do try everything.

Having a rather late conversation with the Caglets shortly about chores etc in lockdown. It’s very odd seeing this as a set amount of time with a defined starting point as it didn’t feel like that last time!

EasilyDepleted · 04/11/2020 23:04

KCC - I like all seafood even oysters and most fish but cannot bear smoked haddock. DH is similar but likes smoked haddock.

DS likes oily fish but not white. He likes prawns but not mussels. DD likes white fish but not keen on oily. She likes mussels but not prawns . I try and do one fish meal a week but it's quite tricky, often we eat say a salmon dish and DD will have fish fingers, or white fish and DS will have a salmon fillet (I buy frozen individual ones).

SingToTheSky · 04/11/2020 23:35

We use those frozen salmon fillets. Often on top of risotto. With a fried egg on top. Weird but it really works!

I love sea bass best, either in foil with asparagus and long stem broccoli, or pan fried. What I really miss, as I haven’t had it in years, is skate. 😋😋😋

ta da continued
⏳did a quick bit of physics stuff with the boys
⏱LOL
⏳phone call with Homestart for review
⏱discussed plans for house rules, chores etc with DH
⏳successfully kept Cagletini awake (too long, TBH, but at least she didn’t nap late)
⏱discussed rules with Caglets
⏳found my bullet journal style notebook (just a nice exercise book with the dotty paper) - want to try making a tracker thing just for these four weeks rather than some undefined length of time

tomorrow
🎯get DS to do more HE - I’ve not printed a plan for him this week as the plans don’t include the paired learning stuff and I was keeping it more social while we still can
🎯take some nice time to set up trackers
🎯write up house rules properly
🎯order photo cards for DD1 (equivalent to Pokémon cards for DS)
🎯set up new charger upstairs (need to switch plugs around) and take books up at the same time
🎯maybe journal as I’d like to do one entry at the start of lockdown and then one after the four weeks. Hard to believe this time last year I was writing pretty much every day
🎯need to wash my hair

HauntingHazel · 04/11/2020 23:41

Flushi I'm currently living in Idaho, USA, originally from Suffolk, all my family are still there too.

ta Das from yesterday
🌻 6 LOLs, mostly sheets and blankets
🌻 Took my Jeep to the car wash and vacuumed it out as well
🌻 Grocery pick up order was ordered and picked up (almost forgot)
🌻 Got my ironing done while watching a Christmas movie 😇
🌻 Cleaned bathroom
🌻 Emptied rubbish bins
🌻 Finished cleaning up living room from boys sleeping in there on Halloween
🌻 Watched all 3 Christmas prince movies on Netflix as a family

I missed my hair appt as I saved it in my phone for 2 hours later than it actually was. She was able to reschedule me for next week though. I didn't get as much done as I'd hoped, but hopefully will get some things done in the evenings. I need to set aside some time in the evenings to do that instead of just lounging. Even if it's just 15 minutes.

Bowerbird5 · 04/11/2020 23:57

ED a lot of smoked haddock is too strong/ artificial try traditionally smoked haddock. The very yellow fish town. Am I thinking about Arbroath or is that kippers. They are too strong for me.

I like most shellfish but not keen on mussels or cockles. We used to get them for free when we lived in Scotland. My BIL sent us a whole side of smoked salmon once as he worked as an engineer for the salmon fisheries. I prefer haddock to cod I think it was because where we lived was mostly haddock being fished. Love salmon and we eat some most weeks. We used to get it really cheap as there was half net fishing there. All gone now. Love smoked salmon and gravalax I keep meaning to try making it myself. Love lobster, white crab and prawns etc
Also oysters as an adult. When I went to high school (1st)I travelled by train and the line went over the oyster beds.
Love barramundi. Like tinned tuna but I don’t like fresh tuna I wish I did. Love lemon sole and plaice. We had plaice last week.
My bf says Aldi’s salmon en croute is delicious.

Well I got everything done on my list today so pleased with that. The Range are staying open and you can buy art and craft stuff which I thought would be classed as none essential but when I asked today they said they had no restrictions so paint, diy etc all available which is good because I need to paint dining room before Christmas.

I went to bed and fell asleep early but now awake again.
DH will hopefully enjoy his new bed. I’m not sure whether he has gone to bed yet. He was watching a film.

Foxes chair looks very comfy.
Possibly missed something about the nuts.😁 Honey peanuts and cashews from the Co op we couldn’t stop eating them especially me. We ate the whole packet.i don’t eat nuts very often. I do like a cashew though and a walnut if I am using them several pop into my mouth.

SingToTheSky · 05/11/2020 00:10

DH did look for them today as he had to visit for a work thing but no luck. Probably a good thing! I’ve had honey roasted cashews before and they are so moreish.

Officially in lockdown then.

Bowerbird5 · 05/11/2020 00:12

Oh Sing how could I forget sea bass and I like sea bream. Sea trout and rainbow trout and locally brown trout.
Crossed posts😄👋🍒👋🍒
I can’t remember the last time I went to the hairdresser. I have done that too Hazel they rang me and so I was able to get there fifteen minutes late. She said she had a feeling I had forgotten because normally I went straight from school. I thought it was good they rang.

Now have talked through fruit order with veggie man. Just need to add to order. I said I would send it about a fortnight before but ask for delivery on our last slot which is Wednesday before Christmas. All good. Just need to buy presents now. Bought some stamping ink today so I can start card making. A friend at church has been unwell and isolating so I also bought some for her. I am going to lend her my stamps so bought her some cards, inks and papers. She used to be a TA she is really lovely person and a very good crafter. She is an excellent knitter also crochet and just loves to learn a new craft.

Bowerbird5 · 05/11/2020 00:17

Yep so we are Sing drops off nuts, chocolate and gin for the coming month.Makes the corner cosy with soft blankets and cushions and a cave for Zoo to hide in. For anyone else who might need it on the lead up to Christmas. Some seasonal candles too. Planning a day at home😁

Stilllivinginazoo · 05/11/2020 05:17

Dd2 is veggie/leaning towards vegan
DS loves haddock, salmon, tinned tuna, smoked fish, sardines, won't entertain shellfish etc

HauntingHazel · 05/11/2020 05:25

At work all day today, but I actually have a ta da list!

🍁 Put all kept decorations in the tote ready to go out to the garage
