Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Thanks for the drinks suggestions! It would be lovely to try some new mixes especially if the Caglets help make it. We are usually very boring here too - water only at home unless I buy juice, with the occasional Pepsi (which I much prefer on tap in a pub). I love the idea of edible glitter - would be useful if we try any baking too.

Actually, really simple festive bake/treat ideas would be lovely too please 😂

I have ordered a couple of simple baking books from the library. One from the junior section. 😳 I did make three ingredient cookies the other day and they worked out quite well. I WILL beat my fear of baking (fear being because I’m generally crap at it, I mean 😂)

EasilyDepleted · 14/11/2020 09:13

Get yourself a copy of the Be-Ro book Sing. www.be-ro.co.uk/#

£2.99 inc p&p - total bargain

SingToTheSky · 14/11/2020 09:27

Ooh yes!!! I had forgotten to order that. Thank you!

TheUpholder · 14/11/2020 10:33

I’m going to order that too, been meaning to for ages! Might need your 3-ingredient cookie recipe too please Sing if you get a chance. I’ve bought some festive cookie cutters but It’s a while since I made biscuits other than a packet mix. I’m going to steal one of your juice ideas ideas too Woolly

Ta Das:
✅ beds made
✅ DW and LOL on
✅ DD deposited at her DGM’s (I figured not taking her in a car with a nail in the tyre and occupying her in kwik fit probably counted as essential family childcare).

Currently waiting in kwik fit having planned to spend the hour at the aldi next door but only managing to use up 20 minutes. I have some Christmas hamper goodies for a relative and some duplicates for us as well as a small top up shop. Limited by what my weak arms can carry back. Very relieved that the car is nearly done. I get myself so anxious about stupid things like that.

Hope you all enjoy your Saturday

SingToTheSky · 14/11/2020 11:05

It was just this up

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.asdagoodliving.co.uk/amp/food/recipes/3-ingredient-choc-nut-cookies

Simple enough that even I could do it 😂😳 although I think I over whisked the eggs as I wasn’t sure what lightly whisked actually meant. They were nice though.

Cagletini is being a PITA, DH is asleep (he was up very early with said PITA), DS is having his screen time on minecraft, DD1 is tidying her room (under strict orders to leave her phone downstairs as she keeps getting distracted). I’ve done some of my digital daily stuff and put a wash on but that’s about it. Going to be a long day I think. I’m hoping DH can take the others out for a bit as once we start potty training (supplies should arrive today!) it probably won’t be practical to for a bit.

Bowerbird5 · 14/11/2020 11:08

Thanks woolly will put that on shopping list.

Oh Zoo now I want a bacon buttie. You certainly deserve some down time.
Ta da
I made a pot of tea!

I eventually got to sleep woke up about 8then snuggled down thinking about what I needed to do and fell asleep again. DH hadn’t woken up either 😳so planning on doing a few things in the kitchen making a cake for someone and need to decide whether to do the dresser or what until nearer Christmas. Still haven’t finished the dining room but the ironing was to get that basket out of there. Just noticed DH has four pairs of shoes in the sitting room. I have trainers tucked under the sofa.🤫 might have to say something about it.
He went to put a pair of shoes on.I did he is grinning. Must be in a good mood.😉
Family time. At the moment he is on the computer in the dining room and I am on the iPad in the sitting room. We are discussing air fryers and coffee packs £25 does that count😂
Right I need a shower and wash my hair as it is manky. Been to have a look at Fly lady so finish kitchen today and I can dining room next week as one other room.😀 Tattie bye.

Bowerbird5 · 14/11/2020 11:11

Now I want a poached egg and avocado on toast 😟no avocados.

foxessocks · 14/11/2020 11:39

I really want a bacon sandwich now too!!

Ta das
Got dd to do her homework, thought I'd need to supervise it but she did it all by herself and it's really good so I'm very happy about that!
Made soup
Made vegetable passata (I was hoping to be able to use it on home made pizza but it is a bit lumpy so might have to be used in pasta dishes or something 🤔)
Cleaned kitchen after all the cooking
Made the bed

To do
Hang washing up
Do some stuff from home bleugh list
Some kitchen decluttering

OP posts:
foxessocks · 14/11/2020 11:39

HauntingHazel · 14/11/2020 15:02

zoo I don't know what I'm making yet 🤣 I have to see what I can find at the store. DH said he will grill for me, so all I have to do is the sides. That doesn't happen very often so I'm jumping at the chance of an easier dinner! Sorry about your lack of sleep again, you really do deserve a rest after that ta da list so early.
bower I think we all have too many shoes in this house too. We have a couple different places they get stored, but I do think we've had more ins than outs on the shoe front.

Right I need to get doing stuff this morning. I'll have to pop back in later to catch up properly (if I have time)
🍒👋 everyone

foxessocks · 14/11/2020 15:40

Well dh has hung the washing up but other than that my list this afternoon has not really been touched! Dd has cluttered the kitchen rather than decluttered it as she is playing cafes in there, I haven't got the heart to stop her as she's playing very nicely. And my home bleugh list is still not finished. I thought dh had hoovered upstairs but turns out it was one bit of carpet where he'd been sanding something down and made a mess.

The only energetic thing I've done this afternoon is played twister with the kids. Wow that game used to be a lot easier when I was young 😂

This flare is kicking my butt.

Teenager has:
Transported laundry upstairs for putting away and put his own away
Transported the shopping to where it needs to be put away
Collected laundry and gathered it for sorting
Sorted through a BRC
Cooked lunch for people
Helped me sort through a drawer of clothes and remove the too small stuffs.

I have:
put on a load of washing
cooked slower cooker batch of sausage casserole
put wool wash into soak
started sorting a small pile of paperwork

still to do
tea for 2 who cant eat sausage casserole
put shopping away
finish jumper wash
Put next load on to wash
wash up pots in sink

And if I have the energy:
Sort and pair the sock pile of doom
place internet orders
Finish some paperwork sorting

Hello, would it be okay if I hopped back on? I fell of the thread a bit, being super busy with work and kids. And then I forgot my password so had to create a new account

FreakyForestier · 15/11/2020 00:01

Of course flushii - I'm a bit AWOL myself at the moment. No stress

MrsTidyHouse · 15/11/2020 06:22

Had a lovely time reading this thread right from the beginning.

Started in the kitchen first thing yesterday. At first, mostly tidying and sorting. Up stepladder to put storage jars on top of unit, and saw half an inch of greasy fluff and dust. Not great up ladders, so cleaning will have to wait. Then found that some of the cans that were earmarked for the cupboard are rusty underneath. Keeping them on shelf to eat rather than storing.

Lots of tumble-drying and putting away. Uniforms ready for Monday. Sorted all the laundry into piles for today, so that I can mindlessly heave in load after load without having to track down lost socks, etc.

Then got side-tracked, but in a good way. Phoned DS about his books. We had a lovely chat for about an hour, including about his books, which I sorted on the stairs while we talked. By the end of the week, he should have most of them and I should have at least a couple of shelves to myself, if not the whole bookcase. A win for both of us! Oh, and he told me his friends are having problems similai to mine re kids and schools. Mostly lack of motivation and being thrawn. That was a relief, as I blame myself for absolutely everything.

Today has to be cooking and ordering delivery. And the laundry, of course.

Stilllivinginazoo · 15/11/2020 06:42

Morning
I Took The Rest Of The DayOff

Friend message me could we meet n walk.i cleared off 45 minutes to the land of adult conversation(lockdown has ment having to face up to death her mum a year ago on back nursing elderly neighbour thru final stages bowel cancer)it did us both a lot of good.
I napped, recipe sorted, did stretches and generally spent big chunk of the day in my room(did feed everyone at intervals, and sat comforting scoutcat from epic bangers from Diwali celebrations

FreakyForestier · 15/11/2020 06:42

Sounds like you are living up to your name mrstidyhouse. Need to paint Ds's bedroom - that's now on DIY list

FreakyForestier · 15/11/2020 06:43

But first coffee. I'm loving my new coffee machine. Just does filter coffee but I love the hot plate. No more cold second cup 😍😍😍

FreakyForestier · 15/11/2020 06:56

Well done zoo. I can't remember reading ever that you took time for yourself. I'm sure scoutcat appreciated your care and concern. Also you did a good turn by your friend too.

foxessocks · 15/11/2020 08:25

zoo that's great, so glad you took time for yourself, and for your friend.

No problem flushii we all go AWOL from time to time!

Freaky I got a coffee machine in the summer for my birthday and I LOVE it Smile . Enjoy your coffee!

I ended up with a lot of cooking disasters yesterday afternoon 🤦‍♀️ I misread the recipe for dinner so that wasn't great, and then the chicken didn't cook properly so I had to put it all back in the oven. I wanted to make chocolate orange cake but my oranges had gone mouldy so it was just chocolate cake and I ran out of cocoa powder for the icing 😂🙄 it still tastes nice though although dh not sure about it as it was a recipe that used oil not butter and apparently the oil I used has a distinct flavour he didn't really like in the cake. I thought it was nice though 🤷‍♀️

Hey flushii no worries at all, nothing wrong with dipping in and out, just jump in. Glad you’re back! :)

MrsTidy snap with the catching up on the thread this morning! I am slow and keep getting distracted (if only there were a kindle paperwhite type thing just for Mumsnet so I couldn’t open different tabs and apps...) so I’m not even halfway yet and I started from page 4 today. I do love reading it.

Zoo I am SO pleased you got some time for you!

Cagletini has just climbed in next to me. Minor progress made with potty training anxiety, quite glad we will have nursery’s input during the week TBH and at least with lockdown we don’t need to navigate being out and about.

Been up a while (feeling a bit sick but that often happens when I’m awake in the small hours?!) and have done my digital tasks for the day as I didn’t want to wake anyone else up, hopefully later I can get some decluttering done as I've not managed even five minutes the last few days. Ideally I’d like to completely clear the hallway and kitchen floors of any random crap, so that sweeping those can be an easier daily task.

TheUpholder · 15/11/2020 09:25

So glad you took some time for yourself Zoo, we all need it and you definitely deserve it.

Top flying Tidy! It sounds like a very productive day.

Jump back in whenever Flushii

There was little flying done once I got back from kwik fit yesterday. I put away the shopping, had a peaceful lunch of leftovers and was during the living room when Dd returned. The rest of the afternoon was spent playing, and we had a takeaway from the local Italians for tea.

Today feels like a power of 3 day. I still have the home bleurgh to do but I can’t say I’m raring to go on that front. DH is working again but should be home mid afternoon and has taken tomorrow as annual leave 🙌🏻

I’ve done 2 PO3 so far:

1️⃣

  • curtains open/beds airing
  • fed everyone
  • s&s upstairs

2️⃣

  • dishes washed
  • benches/dining table wiped
  • 5 days worth of laundry carted upstairs Blush

Next aim will be dressed, beds made, laundry away. Possibly.

TheUpholder · 15/11/2020 09:28

Oh and meant to say Sing. DD was quite resistant to the idea of the potty at home, but it was nursery who suggested starting potty training and like your DD she knew when she needed to go etc. She wanted to be like the bigger boys and girls at nursery once they started trying with her, so while I didn’t think she was quite ready she actually picked it up really quickly with them and it was much easier than I thought.
