Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

I have cleaned the oven - grim. And installed new wireless smoke and heat alarms as per new regs due to come into force in this area. Have trained them all in so that they know one another and trigger a cascade alarm. Bit like potty training 😁

EasilyDepleted · 15/11/2020 16:06

Those cascade alarms sound like a good idea Freaky I had to replace our CO alarm last year and was looking at them in Robert Dyas. Probably should invest.

Slow day today, but I have ticked off some of my admin list. DC's passport renewals done, DS onto electoral roll and updated DD's Duke of Edinburgh stuff so she can get her certificate. It all ground to a halt in March but they are finishing it without the expedition now.

HauntingHazel · 15/11/2020 16:06

zoo that makes me happy to read that you made a conscious decision to make time for yourself and a friend.

Flushii · 15/11/2020 19:21

Hiya thank you all for welcoming me back, I’m glad to hear it’s normal to drop off, I felt a bit rubbish that I couldn’t keep up after a week!. I haven’t done any flying today, I’ve had a cold for about a week now and it doesn’t seem to be going so I’ve decided to just take it easy and we’re watching Christmas films. It’s my moms birthday so we went to her house earlier and she put her Christmas decorations up, which the kids loved.

tidy you were really productive, I wish I could pinch some of that, I’m struggling to get off the sofa today (I even ordered takeaway for tea and moaned about going to the door 😂)

zoo I’m really happy to hear you’re taking time out for yourself. Especially if it seems like your body needs it.

sing thank you, it’s good to be back. I’m currently potty training my DD, she’ll be 3 next month and she’s doing okay but we’re really struggling with keeping her dry in the night. She has a few accidents in the day too, I hope nursery helps with Cagletini.

freaky I love my coffee machine, I got it for Christmas last year and it was the best thing I’ve ever got given.

Sorry about the cooking disasters foxes, a cake is a cake to me so I’d have ate it!. I wish I could experiment with cooking but I’m awful, it’s frozen food or a spag bol in this house. I might try and make a few more things though, I’ll do a meal plan.

I have ordered some clothes for the DC, Sainsburys are doing some gorgeous things for little ones. My favourite is this set I got for DD tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/Ochre-Woodland-Rabbit-Pinafore-Dress-%26-Top-%281-7-Years%29/137670849-Yellow?searchTerm=:newArrivals&searchProduct=

Stilllivinginazoo · 15/11/2020 19:47

flushi that's darling ❤️

SingToTheSky · 15/11/2020 20:25

Aww that is cute!

It’s actually gone ok today, she has got a lot less anxious this afternoon. So much that she actually fell asleep on there this evening 😳😂

I’ve managed to be a bit more productive today. Tomorrow morning I have my induction with the tutor for my new course, thought I’d get it done quickly as it means I get the books sent out sooner!

I need to check DS’ plan for the week too. I need to prepare more stuff he can do with less input from us as I’m running myself into the ground. Unfortunately it’s more the general language etc he struggles with than the actual content so it’s not as simple as just making the work easier Confused

Glittery - re DofE, actually this is a win for DD. She's perfectly capable of the expedition having been a Girl Guide for years but she was not getting on with the group she had been put in as they were all messing about and not doing any of the prep stuff, so she was really pleased it got cancelled. My DS's school used to do that, printed sheets with URLs hundreds of letters long on them, for dyslexic students

Flushi - gorgeous pinafore. My DD (14) has more or less zero interest in new clothes and hasn't had anything new for several years now, I miss shopping for her.

HillsBesideTheSea · 16/11/2020 00:39

Urgh. DofE. yeah that is a. Well yeah. Ds has a almost finished one here. but he never inputted stuffs so that is actually on my list to chase this month. He has completed expedition, volunteering and physical. It just needs to be made sure it is imputed correctly. Glad you are able to get that sorted for her ED

It has been productive here. I am shattered and have an early start tomo. Forgive the crash through

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/11/2020 04:27

Morning!
Been awake since 3
Will give up shortly and get up ..

TheUpholder · 16/11/2020 06:48

Brew for Zoo, although you’re no doubt powering through an epic list of ta Das by now Grin

That pinafore is gorgeous Flushii. Sainsbury’s kids clothes are lovely, as are Morrisons’.

That was some impressive flying yesterday Woolly. . Glad I’m not the only one Blush

Well done to your DD on her DofE ED, and well done for making the alarms work Forestier. That’s the sort of take that I would massively procrastinate over.

Hazel hope the truffles went well

So yesterday after posting I managed the power of 3 I’d set myself (whatever that was) and managed to sweep the kitchen floor. I then developed a headache and just felt meh, so nothing else productive was achieved (other than cooking spaghetti and meatballs for tea and to be honest DH did some of that.)

I’m determined today will be better so I crept up at 6. Extracted some laundry via phone torchlight without waking the other two, half tidied the living room, set off DW and hand washed a pile of dishes too. They are still asleep so I’m chilling with a cuppa then going to get moving again.

To do:
🙄 full home bleurgh
🙄 another LOL
🙄 iron enough uniform etc for the week
🙄 parcel up and send a couple of returns
🙄 something else important that I’ve completely forgotten but I’m hoping pops back into my head at some point.

Also need a family walk as me and DD have barely left the house over the weekend and my activity levels have been shocking.

Hope everyone survives Monday.

foxessocks · 16/11/2020 06:51

zoo it is a very dreary morning!!
I think it hasn't helped that yesterday was very unproductive all round really, ended up getting a takeaway, just couldn't get motivated and then when we did finally get out for a bike ride with the kids the heavens opened and we all got drenched! So I feel almost like I wasted my Sunday and now it's Monday again!

I will try and make up for it today and be more productive (although am working all day so limited flying!)

A few positives so far today - the dc went into school and nursery with big smiles even though ds especially had been a bit down in the dumps on the way. Phew.
Also, there is a kitten which keeps coming and looking through my window at me and playing with the leaves that are blowing about 💗 I'm not sure who it belongs to but it has a collar so I think it is ready to be out and about, it's very small though!

And my last positive, I have a home made chocolate cake to eat on my coffee break in a minute. And I've done a 5 minute morning exercise routine so surely I've now earned that cake 😂

I suppose I had better get on with my work now...

Be back later!

Yikes Zoo that is one crazy list! Glad you managed to take time for you even if it was imposed rather then through choice

Family walk Up? braver than I! We have cross trainer, have done for years. Apparently it took a pandemic for it to be used regularly Hmm

Sounds like you had a productive day MrsTidy

Yay for less anxiousness Sing

Hope you are feeling better soon Flushii

4 different types of truffel Hazel? do you care to share more details?

freaky how sensitive are the cascading alarms? I fear that this might be a bad choice if the teen decides to make toast at 2am because the toaster always (and i mean always) sets off the alarm in that room. It could get old very quick Hmm

Hope you had a good weekend Woolly

So after 3hrs sleep I have:
Moved cars for builders
Rearranged with builders because suppliers they needed not delivered yet
Breathed sigh or relief when person in charge said they would chase stuffs
cleared route through garage to back
2 loads of washing
2 lots of bread rising
tomatos defrosting for chutney
quince defrosting for jelly
load and set to run dishwasher
wash up a load of tupperwear
gather other tupperwear for the great 2020 culling
dispatched the teen
Drunk more coffee than is wise
Folded laundry
hung out laundry
Carried the basket of towels up ready for going away
collected stuff for going in car
deal with manager for building work project
deal with delivery of supplies for project
Sort out appointment for quote for next stage of work
Emptied the over flowing ironing basket
Realise access to bedrooms is going to be needed for workmen tomo - have minor panic about the shit hole states of them. (mine is like an explosion of paperwork )
Drink more coffee

Right time for breakfast?

HillsBesideTheSea · 16/11/2020 11:14

Coffee?
