Thank you to EerilyDeleted for being an excellent leader on the October thread! Time to put your feet up for a well earned rest now!

This is my first time running the thread so sorry if the links below don't work I'm learning as I go!! If they don't I'll come back and try again Grin

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launchpad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to

Hiya everyone, I compile forgot to post my ta da’s yesterday! I have posted them below. Freddie is still poorly, he spent the day at my mum’s and we’re staying there today for dinner. I’m glad I have the weekend off now to stay with him and get him better, he’s never really been poorly before and I don’t like it!. I had a bit of a wobble yesterday, I’m very stressed about so many things, money, Freddie, work, COVID etc and it all got to me. As much as I’m happy just the 2 of us, sometimes I wish Fred’s dad was still around so I could get a bit of help.

I hope you enjoyed your night away hazel

zoo I’m really sorry to hear that the support your DD is getting isn’t very good but I’m glad the phone call seemed a bit more positive.

Sorry about the school hills that sounds shit.

foxes I need to get Fred some clothes, but I can’t find anything that I like for him!.

EasilyDepleted · 13/11/2020 16:25

Tada!

1x LOL done and dried
Doormat washed and on line (turtle mat)
Shower curtain now having a 95deg wash with soda crystals to get rid of limescale
Kitchen - we have one of those rails with hooks on for utensils, it was totally overloaded so I have decluttered and reorganised it
Bathroom blitzed
Just going to run vac round before DCs get in from school

HillsBesideTheSea · 13/11/2020 16:37

Going to be honest i think it is a case of a problem is not a problem until it is a problem tbh. When the school want to talk is incredibly inconvenient but there is no convenient time so that's a thing. I am thinking it is a consent to a particular route that they looking for. Eg - do you agree to your child being tested for this exam consideration/we want to pull him out of this exam do you consent. Hopefully it goes smoothly, i am just ready for this stage of life to be over. tbh i am ready for 2020 and the covid mess to be over!

Zoo don't do yourself down you have plenty and more besides experience of dealing with schools. You advice is sound. Glad you are hopefully getting some help for Lil zoo. Hope both your girls are helped soon.

Foxes no pointy stick hope you feel less tired soon. Good luck with the clothes shopping! I hates it.

Isabelle yeah clothes shopping for kids gets worse. Especially when they get to the point that they have opinions. GrinHmm good luck.

SingToTheSky · 13/11/2020 17:35

Ah yes hills clothes shopping is so easy for DS (bulk buying joggers basically). The other week when I got home with some bigger size stuff for the 3yo DD1 asked if I had got her anything (as I’d said she did need some bigger clothes). Errrr no I’m not risking buying you clothes when you’re not with me 🤦‍♀️😂

I am horrendously behind on the thread. Trying super hard in lockdown to build up decent habits that I’ve always struggled with, so I’m a bit too distracted to post lists here, but I think it’s going fairly well as I’m managing to get some regular stuff done even when feeling a bit overwhelmed by the bigger picture IYSWIM.

Anyway I was just reminded after seeing a picture of a festive drink - does anyone have any nice suggestions? Generally we don’t drink alcohol (I’m quite fussy with it anyway, I like the odd fruity cocktail with the weaker stuff like schnapps but not much else) and it would be lovely to have some nice festive ideas as otherwise we just get a bottle of schloer and that’s about it 😂

Unfortunately I’m not keen on mulled spices - I like the idea of it but I like sweet drinks only, really.

Any ideas please :)

EasilyDepleted · 13/11/2020 19:01

Non-alcoholic drinks. DD likes Appletiser, DS likes ginger beer. I like Bottlegreen ginger and lemongrass cordial. Waitrose have a really good soft drink selection for when you are after something special.

HillsBesideTheSea · 13/11/2020 19:05

We have used the mulled spices in apple juice. It works surprisingly well.

Bowerbird5 · 13/11/2020 19:09

Hi,
Does cooking count in the kitchen?

So today I have made my bed! That’s it😳

I have spent a lot of the morning once I got moving making chutney. The house stinks of vinegar. Lots of chopping and some whizzing in the processor then into the jam pan. So I have three Kilmer jars and a small pot of chutney. It is a bit sour but I am hoping the flavours will develop by Christmas. I put a bit of extra sugar but don’t want to add more as I don’t want to spoil it. One pot for BF. We like homemade things.
Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed my day. I have also started the Creole Cake. You soak the fruit in loads of booze for the week then make the cake. The smell so far is delicious mingled with the chutney it smells very Christmassy here.
Oh I have done something else. I washed up and I washed the Kilmer jars and popped them in the oven. Then while it was all simmering I spent an hour and a half doing the ironing while watching a ch.5 film.
DH has been to chop wood for DS2. I would let him do it himself he is a big boy and he used to chop wood when he was a young lad. He quite liked it.
Gave me a bit of space anyway.
Right salmon and yellow fish to cook.

Bowerbird5 · 13/11/2020 19:10

I bought some different spices in apple juice from a craft fair once it was lovely.

TheUpholder · 13/11/2020 19:53

I am very glad it’s Friday. I’m waaay behind but hope everyone is well.

foxessocks · 13/11/2020 21:05

Cheers up I'm joining you with the gin Grin

OP posts:
foxessocks · 13/11/2020 21:06

Making your bed is still something bower! Anyway sounds like you did a lot more than that!

OP posts:
foxessocks · 13/11/2020 21:08

sing I'm not much help with the non alcoholic beverages I'm afraid Blush not because I only drink alcohol obviously - but I only drink alcohol, tea or water 😂
I don't really like any fizzy drinks or juices really. Apple juice sometimes and maybe a smoothie for health reasons sometimes!

OP posts:
FreakyForestier · 13/11/2020 21:08

Fentimans ginger beer is lovely. Right now I'm on wine 🍷

foxessocks · 13/11/2020 21:08

Oh and coffee mustn't forget the coffee!

OP posts:
HillsBesideTheSea · 13/11/2020 23:36

Never forget the coffee foxes Shock

Bowerbird5 · 14/11/2020 01:32

Yeah foxes there was a lot of ironing. All mine. DH doesn’t bother. He made tea when he came back because I was slow to move and do it. He was really pleased I had made the chutney. It was baked potato, peas and I cooked the fish. He had yellow and I had salmon. We need to eat down the freezer a bit.

I bought DF cornetto type ice cream from the 😉special supermarket. They are delicious I have had two this week. I will post what brand tomorrow because I have forgotten.
I have restless bloody legs again and can’t get to sleep.

HauntingHazel · 14/11/2020 01:50

We had a lovely time away from home-ish. There's a mask mandate where we went, but not back at home so wearing a mask all day is no fun (I have to while at my 2nd job, but not the main job). DH doesn't ever wear one so he took some adjusting. Probably won't go back until that mandate is lifted.
We also didn't get to go in the hot tub as they need 24 hours notice first (we weren't even there 24 hours!).
Anyway, we made it out the escape room with 3 minutes 35 seconds left! We also spent way too much money on food and shopping at the huge mall - we barely even went in there, could literally spend days in it. I did find a Crunchie bar which I am excited about!

Sing I found some festive cocktails on Pinterest. The one I made last Christmas involved orange juice, cranberry juice, sprite, champagne, silver tequila, vodka and triple sec. I made it in a large pitcher and added frozen cranberries and orange slices. It was delicious. Right now (well not literally this minute as we're on our way home) I'm drinking apple cider (the juice) with caramel flavoured vodka, that's delicious too!

I'm looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight, with lovely soft sheets and comfy mattress, and of course seeing our dog again. She's probably missed us loads.

HauntingHazel · 14/11/2020 01:54

X- post bower sorry you're having trouble sleeping. Is there anything you can do to help alleviate the restless legs? Your DH sounds like mine when it comes to ironing. Even my DC don't care about their clothes being ironed so I only do mine.

HauntingHazel · 14/11/2020 05:01

Well, we got home to a dark street, yep, power went out 😔 thank goodness we have some battery powered lights in the kitchen and a couple of good torches. Not out for long after we got back, but at least 10 minutes. There were high winds so not surprising really. We're all settled in, bags unpacked and put away. Having a drink before going to bed. I have a busy weekend ahead of me: going shopping at Costco (usually half a day early with travel time) and I've got to make some caramels and truffles ready for Monday. I also need to fit grocery pickup order and pick up in there and it's my turn to cook and host the weekly dinner. Thank goodness I can spread that over 2 days 😴

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/11/2020 06:58

What are you planning to cook for the weekly dinner hazel?
Sing I'm not much use with drinks- I drink water...
DS milk, water, occasional hot chocolate or milkshake
Dd2 mainly water, flavoured water(peach and raspberry m+s one is nice)occasional hot chocolate/apple juice.used like a fizzy drink occasionally but reflux put paid to that
Lil zoo likes lime and soda water as special treat, peach Aldi squash(and pear and apple one),occasional apple juice, flavoured waters, red squash(summer fruit, blackcurrant etc)

Reading that back we are such creatures of habit!!

MrsTidyHouse · 14/11/2020 07:26

Planning to continue with kitchen this weekend, as I have some time to myself. Found remote for ancient hi-fi that lives on top of a cupboard, and now I can have loud music while I work.

To Do -
Complete kitchen sorting and tidying.

Laundry catch-up.

Clear two shelves of wall unit to pantry, put utensils in there off worktop.

Tidy fridge-freezer and write shopping-list.

Find tubs for supermarket delivery to sit while I put it away.

If at all possible, do some cleaning in kitchen and utility. Sometimes I can't be bothered with this, as the roof will probably leak over the winter. But I want pleasant surroundings.

MrsTidyHouse · 14/11/2020 07:28

And read this thread, which is lovely under my favourite cover, with a relaxing coffee and my feet up. 😁

TheUpholder · 14/11/2020 07:40

Morning

That is a busy weekend Hazel, hope it goes to plan.

Zoo you have definitely achieved a days worth of flying there. Really hope you get the downtime.

It’s always easier to crack on when you have time to yourself isn’t it Tidy. And much easier with music.

Sing I often make a Christmas cocktail of slow gin and Prosecco, with edible glitter when I’m feeling fancy. I think edible glitter would christmasify any drink your heart desired.

Feeling a lack of motivation this morning. DH had to leave for work early, and has to work all weekend again. It’s good that they are so busy but he’s shattered and we are missing time as a family. I have to take the car for new tyres this morning too. Everywhere feels a bit grubby, the washing basket is close to breaking point and I just want to stay wrapped up on the sofa. I’m allowing myself until 8:15 then need to get us both dressed and do my morning routine, heading out at 9:15.

Ta da:
✅ fed everyone needing fed
✅ a bit of tidying while the kettle was boiling

foxessocks · 14/11/2020 08:17

Glad you had a nice trip hazel Smile

Just popping by quickly to post links
flight plan
Today is family fun day and no missions because it's the weekend

Up sorry you are missing family time 😞hope getting new tyres goes smoothly today for you

Zoo hope you get your nap

Mrstidy I'm hoping to get some more kitchen stuff done today too, good luck with it!
