Fledglings Flying Frightfully into October

A huge thanks to Mogthesleepycat for steering us successfully through September FlowersFlowersFlowers

If you are struggling with C.H.A.O.S. (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (Something That Undermines Family Fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of support and chatter along the way.

The FlyLady link is here Flylady. Don't be put off by the twee language of the site – we all agree that the underlying system is very effective.

This little-and-often system is designed so that you can follow a series of steps and routines each day (which gradually become second nature) in zones of the house which are designated weekly; defining and minimising housework - which in theory should leave you with loads more time to do something more interesting instead.

At the same time it is intended to reduce that panicky "rabbit in headlights" feeling when you are overwhelmed and everything needs doing all at once. No problem if you miss a day or two; just jump right back in and it will all come around again next month.

It's up to you, but we advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be swamped with marketing nonsense. All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  • start or repeat baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 minutes a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce baby steps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.
  • And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.

There are three key points to keep in mind throughout:

  • No perfectionism allowed - this is harder than you would imagine and many of us on this thread struggle with this one.
  • You are never behind - just start where you are and anything you do is progress.
  • It didn't get into a mess overnight, it won't get tidy over night - accept it will take time to get on top of things and you will be happier.

If you are new; then trying to spend 15mins decluttering daily and doing the baby steps is a good way to start. Some of us (mentioning no names) can have scary looking ‘ta-da’ lists but don't let that worry you. Do what you can, anything is better than nothing, and don't judge yourself against others.

If all else fails, a brew + the power of three technique + a bit of support on here can work wonders.

Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings Launchpad.

Don’t let it put you off if we appear a bit cliquey, we really aren’t. Some of us have been on here for years – but all lurkers, intermittent returnees, oldies and newcomers very, very welcome.

SingToTheSky put together a glossary of the many weird and might-seem-a-bit-cliquey terms. We have been going a long time but we always love newbies - hopefully this list will help you settle in.

KCC - the Keep Calm Corner, invented by our lovely Fledgling SC back in March, where the OP posts nice diverting links, memes, questions etc to distract us from the pandemic.

Ta Da - instead of a to do list (which is of course welcome too) we often post our achievements, with accompanying jazz hands, in order to celebrate the positives, however small they seem! Sometimes if we want to share an embarrassed giggle/commiserations we also post a ta didn’t - the stuff we didn’t get done!

BRC - Bag/Box of Random Crap. These are usually formed when we are panic tidying and shove anything in “to sort later” which is also known as a stash and dash .

Power of Three or PO3 - the idea that if you’re feeling really unmotivated/overwhelmed by your to do list, you just choose three things to do, and then post when you’ve done them.

DLMS - didn’t lose my shit - in other words, somehow stayed relatively calm despite a stressful day!

SS/S&S - Swish and Swipe - this is one of the key parts of the morning routine, a quick once over of the bathroom.

Home Bleugh - Flylady's Home Blessing routine

And a few basics:
LOL - load of laundry
WM - washing machine
TD - tumble dryer
DW - dishwasher
HSL - hallway, stairs, landing

And finally "The Naughty Corner" - this is for Fledglings who perhaps didn't get done what they had planned for the day but are in need of a comfy seat, pile of cushions, tasty snacks, stiff drink and friends to chat to.

eerily cats have obviously learnt to read the calendar!

I should probably learn from them... I got texted by school head at 9:40 yesterday to ask if I was coming to the governors' committee meeting at 9:30 Blush. Fortunately it was zoom-based (and I'd skipped the gym because my knee was a bit weird) so I was able to join them immediately! I brazened it out by implying I hadn't realised it was October (bad merry).

TaDa (friday)
Got up promptly in order to send PCC papers
Realised that vicar hadn't actually sent me the agenda as stated in her text yesterday (she has definitely worked out I don't look at emails) and texted to say so.
Remembered it was vicar's day off and apologised for this
prepared other documents and drafted email
exercise class - Steve was really pushing it today, which was ok until he decided to do stuff in horse stance which is bent knees which I cannot sustain
shower etc
lol - but remembered to wait till H returned from the gym before setting it going
lunch
sent PCC email

ToDo
ironing
hang washing
clear table of papers (yes, I know this was on the list a few days back...)
look at emails!
prepare pizza toppings (damn, I took chillies out of the freezer forgetting we have home-grown jalapenos now...)
wash up
take bacon out of freezer
watch HIGNFY Smile

ToMorrow
go to gym
more sorting of emails
make some puff pastry

The bacon is frozen in Enough For Four blocks, so there will be some left over (sob). Have decided to use it to make a cheese and bacon tart/wrap thing for S2 and use up the 2 salmon fillets in the freezer to make a salmon tart for me and H. There's also some dill butter so I can use that up too. I haven't made puff pastry before so this will be interesting (especially as H has).

I did say to them last night "vet tomorrow" but I didn't think they were actually listening! They never pay any attention normally.

Determined but deluded Grin. Sums me up.

Hello everyone! I have fallen off the threads these last few months but will aim to be better this month. Thanks for the thread ED .

Love all the name changes, might change mine if I can remember my MN password but should be fairly recognisable.

Kids had INSET day today so we went into town shopping (they wanted to!). I am shattered and fearful of the cost of it all and now sitting while DD2 has a swimming lesson. Zoom Brownies -the girl guiding one not the food - next.

Sorry work is shit That. You are alright about part time. My job can be great at times and I don’t really want to leave anyway but I am really stuck as the hours are mainly ok for me and getting similar hours anywhere else is so hard.

Best go, swimming lesson nearly over.

Eerie waves to everyone.

TooStressyTooMessy · 02/10/2020 16:51

Clever cats ED. Yes, how do they always know Confused?

SingToTheSky · 02/10/2020 19:22

Determined but deluded is definitely applicable to my life 😅

I keep flagging in the afternoons and not sure why. Although today that was certainly brought on by having messed up and forgotten an appt, all sorted but FFS.

Cagletini had a very late nap so I’ve done a bit of drawing and no housework obviously 🙄

I am SO glad it’s the weekend.

Lisette1940 · 02/10/2020 19:40

ED cats are great actors. 🍷👻 Waves. Wretched day forecast for tomorrow. Rain, rain, rain.

Lots of exercise there sing. ED - 😾 how should we mark your passing? Memorial award for decluttering? Newbie award in your name for 30 days Baby steps adherence? That's one annoyed feline in that carrier 😾😾😾

AlexTheHalloweenCat · 02/10/2020 22:12

ED that is one very annoyed cat. Sing hope the toddler goes to sleep.

ChillerKillerCroissant · 02/10/2020 22:25

Brilliant Lisette Grin

EerilyDeleted · 02/10/2020 22:45
Grin

Actually she's as gentle as they come. Just got a very disdainful air about her. She'll get over it.

Thank you for sharing your spice organisation tips. Plenty to think about!

Ta Da:
🎉LOL x4.
🎉Morning routine
🎉Dinner made
🎉Aquarium water changed X1. The other two will get sorted on Sunday as per usual.
🎉Weeded the front garden a bit and done a bit of pruning. I wish I knew what I was doing with pruning 😂 I just gave most bushes I could reach a haircut.
🎉Evening routine

ED I hope your cats forgiven you for their excursion to the vet 😊
Sing I hope you are winning 'going to bed' battle with the little one.

🍒🍒👋👋 to everyone!

Lisette1940 · 02/10/2020 23:03

Glad to hear it ED - we don't want to lose you (places ED award for decluttering and babysteps adherence in cupboard and forces door shut) Cats just know but they also know who feeds them 😁

Lisette1940 · 02/10/2020 23:08

MC I have this spice shelf here

apumpkinaday · 02/10/2020 23:25

Hiya all, it’s a late one tonight. I’m really burnt out with work, we’ve had 2 classes off isolating due to cases. My class is untouched but it’s nerve wracking. I finished all my Christmas shopping today, I may get a few nik naks here and there but mostly sorted now.

Hi bramble! Welcome!

Thanks bower our home has some lovely little quirks. It’s a Victorian terrace and I bloody love it. I hope your blood pressure can get sorted out💐

THAT I’m a primary teacher so not sure about GCSEs but I do hope they go ahead, with some leeway being given as people may not have been able to learn everything as they would in an average year. I really hope you find a suitable job🤞🏻

ED ddog is like that, when she has to go the vets she must know because she hides!

That’s about all I can do for personals, I’m sorry if I’ve missed anything important!. Not got the energy for my ta da’s, I did the basics plus decluttering and sorting out car and handbag!.

Bowerbird5 · 02/10/2020 23:47

Made fish pie. Washed up.

Ta Didn’t
DH is not buried under patio.

Maybe the reason I have been unwell a few times lately is because I am not well. GP asked nurse to phone me. Results of bloods have thrown up a few things coupled with high BP. So I have to make some changes or have more tablets. Damn

Went to church. Glasses fogged up. I kept thinking about my job and burst into tears. I kept having tears. I feel like I am losing the plot. My friend was there so talked to her. She used to be a teacher and we worked together for a while. I just feel so sad at the moment. My sister is very ill and I can’t even go and stay to be with her. A lady I used to know is very ill and her family haven’t been allowed to see her we are saying prayers for her and her family. I had a panic attack in church and I was having to take deep breath. I think I will ask my GP if I can go and see him next week. It is crap not being able to see him. I am starting to LMS.

Bowerbird5 · 02/10/2020 23:49

Ed my horse used to know the farrier’s car. If he came earlier we had no chance of catching dhorse.

Lisette1940 · 03/10/2020 00:44

Bower mahoosive hug 🤗 X 10. I think this means you're having normal reactions to going through an abnormal time. Perhaps a chat with gp wouldn't go amiss. Good thing is your dh doesn't have to coax you into a carrier 🙀🐾

Lisette1940 · 03/10/2020 00:46

Sounds that you did fine pumpkin - great name change. Glad you like your home. It's really important to have a sanctuary 🏡 Ever looked up who lived there in the past?

HauntingHazel · 03/10/2020 01:58

ED your cat looks very scary, not happy with you at all!
💐 bower so sorry you're having a tough time.

Last night I scrubbed my sink and made it shine again, today at lunch I did the same to my ILs kitchen sink.

We are on our way to a "spook alley" right now, we enjoy it, it'll be the first time for DS so it'll be interesting. It's set in an old school, 5 buildings, all different themes with actors that try to scare/ entertain.
👻👋 everyone!

TheUpholder · 03/10/2020 07:49

Morning!

Welcome Bramble!

Bower Flowers. You’ve been through a stressful time, have a few tears if you need to. Hope you get to see the GP soon.

No need to hide Zoo, I’ve been in the naughty corner too

Hope you find something suitable soon That. Full
time would absolutely be too much of a stress with all you have on.

I love how expressive cats are. Mine regularly have completely pissed off expressions. Hope yours has forgiven you ED.

So the working week was survived. Had a disaster with soup leakage all over my work back pack yesterday, so that’s been through the wash and has been hung up this morning. We are reasonably tidy after a little blitz last night, but downstairs is due it’s home bleurgh and I need to look at the zone missions I’ve missed.

Today has been designated a onesie day. Yellow weather warnings for rain here, it’s torrential already. Currently eating breakfast in front of Onward. It’s recently been added to Disney+, was it you asking about that Sing?
